Analyse

Set Details Headlong Rush is the stronger of Torterra's Ground-type moves, allowing it guaranteed OHKOs on Registeel and Mew, but it has the drawbacks of making contact and dropping Torterra's stats further which, Earthquake lacks. Bullet Seed is an effective move when paired with the reliability of Loaded Dice, while Wood Hammer retains its power with any item. Rock Blast and Stone Edge are ways for Torterra to hit Flying-types like Noivern and Talonflame, with the former used alongside Loaded Dice. Loaded Dice is used to turn Bullet Seed and Rock Blast into reliable moves. White Herb gives Torterra more resilience against the moves and Pokemon that can hit it after Shell Smash, like priority moves and Choice Scarf users, and it can also let Torterra utilize its bulk to use Shell Smash twice in the right situation. Overgrow allows a damaged Torterra to OHKO Pokemon like Umbreon and Mew with its Grass-type attacks after a boost. A Jolly nature is required to outspeed Choice Scarf Gardevoir. Tera Fairy makes Torterra immune to Noivern's Draco Meteor and resist Chesnaught's attacks. Tera Fire prevents burns from Gengar's Will-O-Wisp and Entei's Sacred Fire. Tera Steel is used to survive Flamigo's Brave Bird and Entei's Extreme Speed. Shell Smash Torterra fits best on offense and hyper offense teams where it can sweep after all of its checks have been defeated or weakened. Torterra appreciates allies that can threaten its Grass- and Flying-type checks like Toxtricity, Terrakion, and Entei. Spikes from Klefki and Gastrodon are effective at weakening the Grass-types that Torterra struggles with, while Stealth Rock from Terrakion, Lycanroc-D, or Kleavor can cripple Flying-types. Knock Off support from Krookodile is useful to remove Heavy-Duty Boots from Noivern. VoltTurn support from Flamigo, Kilowattrel, and Magnezone can help Torterra switch in against Pokemon it can freely set up against. Sticky Web from Ribombee can alleviate Torterra's Speed issues, allowing it to outspeed Choice Scarf Gengar and Mienshao and even letting Torterra safely run an Adamant nature.
