Mewtwo threatens heavy damage on common special walls like Blissey and Eternatus with Psystrike, hitting them on their lower Defense stat. Ice Beam can potentially 2HKO Yveltal without boosts or OHKO at +2 while providing coverage to hit Groudon and Zygarde. Fire Blast is necessary for Mewtwo to break through Necrozma-DM and Ferrothorn. These three moves should be used on every offensive Mewtwo, but the fourth move is more customizable depending on what the rest of the team prefers. Nasty Plot turns Mewtwo into a terrifying sweeper that can OHKO most of the metagame with just the three coverage moves above, but it will still be forced out by common Pokemon like Calyrex-S and Marshadow. Shadow Ball lets Mewtwo dent Lunala for teammates like Groudon and Zekrom and prevents Calyrex-S from switching in on Mewtwo to force it out. Life Orb gives a much-needed power boost, allowing Mewtwo to run Timid to outspeed almost the entire metagame and at worst Speed tie with Eternatus. The recoil eats into Mewtwo's already mediocre bulk, which limits its effectiveness in longer games, but Recover helps offset that if run. Expert Belt can be run over Life Orb, but the decrease in damage output means that Modest is the nature of choice to give favorable rolls against Pokemon like Necrozma-DM and Yveltal. The 4 EVs in Defense as opposed to HP allow Mewtwo to always survive Life Orb Adamant Marshadow's Shadow Sneak from full HP. Calyrex-S appreciates Mewtwo's ability to potentially break past a desperate Yveltal and can clean through weakened teams better than anything else in the tier. Calyrex-S also potentially provides cleric support for if Mewtwo gets paralyzed, which will happen most often when Recover Mewtwo is used to check defensive Zygarde. Other sweepers like Zekrom and offensive Groudon likewise appreciate Mewtwo potentially breaking through their checks like Lunala and Zarude. Because of Mewtwo's weakness to opposing Calyrex-S, teammates that can check it like Yveltal, Zarude, and Ho-Oh are required, and having more than one Calyrex-S check is a good idea given how weak Mewtwo is to it. Spikes setters like Ferrothorn and Skarmory are helpful, as Mewtwo can easily force switches to rack up residual damage, and both of them can come in and set Spikes easily on Necrozma-DM, which Mewtwo doesn't appreciate facing without being boosted already. Groudon both can set Stealth Rock and power up Mewtwo's Fire Blast via Drought, which really helps it threaten Necrozma-DM. Groudon can also help weaken Pokemon like Yveltal, as Yveltal is a fairly common form of counterplay to Groudon. Pokemon with pivoting moves that can bring Mewtwo in freely like U-turn Yveltal and Galarian Darmanitan are appreciated as partners, as Mewtwo struggles to come in by itself frequently. Galarian Darmanitan also appreciates Mewtwo beating down its best check in Necrozma-DM.

Moves STAB Psystrike severely dents Pokemon that don't resist it while hitting dedicated special walls like Blissey on their physical defense. It also chips away at some of Mewtwo's switch-ins like Ho-Oh and Primal Groudon. Ice Beam offers much-needed coverage, OHKOing Mega Salamence and Rayquaza and hitting Yveltal, Arceus-Ground, Zygarde-C, Ultra Necrozma, and both Giratina formes hard. Fire Blast is very important for hitting Necrozma-DM and certain other Steel-types like Mega Scizor, Ferrothorn, Celesteela, Magearna, and Aegislash harder than Focus Blast can. Calm Mind gives Mewtwo the ability to set up and potentially sweep; it can OHKO or 2HKO most Pokemon after a boost. However, using Calm Mind forces Mewtwo to forgo one of its coverage options, making it walled by more Pokemon depending on the move it won't be using. Focus Blast allows Mewtwo to hit Steel-types like Dialga and Dark-types like Tyranitar, Darkrai, and Arceus-Dark. Taunt can improve Mewtwo's matchup against more defensive teams as well as bulkier Geomancy Xerneas sets, but note that Mewtwo values dishing out as much damage as possible with its expansive movepool. Shadow Ball OHKOes Lunala when its Shadow Shield is down and gives Mewtwo a reliable way of hitting Necrozma-DM, Necrozma-DW, Mega Sableye, Arceus-Ghost, Aegislash, Gothitelle, and all other bulky Psychic-types in one moveslot. Set Details 40 Defense EVs allow Mewtwo to avoid the OHKO from Life Orb Marshadow's Shadow Sneak prior to Mega Evolution. Maximum Speed investment along with a Timid nature allows Mewtwo to outspeed +1 Zygarde-C, Marshadow, Rash Deoxys-A, Ultra Necrozma, Naganadel, Mega Gengar, and anything slower. The rest of the EVs are put into Special Attack to increase Mewtwo's power. Using Unnerve as the pre-Mega ability allows Mewtwo to hit Chople Berry Extreme Killer Arceus and Tyranitar harder prior to Mega Evolving. Mewtwonite Y enables Mewtwo to Mega Evolve into Mega Mewtwo Y, giving it Insomnia and crucial Speed benchmarks. A Life Orb increases Mewtwo's overall damage output; Mewtwo does more damage than Mega Mewtwo Y. However, Life Orb recoil wears Mewtwo down, and the extra Speed Mega Mewtwo Y possesses enables it to outspeed the aforementioned key threats. Usage Tips Mewtwo works best as a mid- or late-game cleaner when its checks have been weakened enough, but it can also be used early- and mid-game to punch holes in the opposing team, and it can weaken some of its checks. Try to get Mewtwo in safely through a double switch or the use of a pivot because it isn't bulky enough to take powerful attacks. If Mewtwo is running Taunt, it should be used liberally to shut down support Pokemon. It is best to use the appropriate coverage move to wallbreak more effectively, especially on a predicted switch. When running Calm Mind, it is very important to only set up when all of Mewtwo's checks are gone and all faster Pokemon and priority users have been eliminated. When trying to sweep with Calm Mind, set up on a predicted switch or on defensive Pokemon that either can't do much damage back or are weak to Mewtwo's moves, such as Toxapex, Blissey, and some support Arceus formes. Due to Mewtwo not being able to run all the coverage it wants to, appropriate foes must be eliminated before sweeping, especially when using Calm Mind or Taunt. If not using Fire Blast, Steel-types like Necrozma-DM, Mega Scizor, Celesteela, and Aegislash must be weakened before sweeping. If not using Focus Blast, Dark-types like Tyranitar and Darkrai should similarly be weakened. Note that if Mewtwo has to stay in against Life Orb Marshadow after taking Stealth Rock damage, it should not Mega Evolve; not Mega Evolving allows it to survive Shadow Sneak and then OHKO Marshadow with Psystrike. Team Options Mewtwo really appreciates entry hazard support from Pokemon like Primal Groudon, Necrozma-DM, Deoxys-S, and Dialga. Mewtwo values Primal Groudon, Zygarde-C, Marshadow, and Ho-Oh for checking Steel-types like Necrozma-DM, Magearna, and Aegislash, especially if Mewtwo lacks Fire Blast. Tapu Lele provides Mewtwo with Psychic Terrain support, increasing the power of Psystrike and negating any priority like Marshadow's Shadow Sneak that might stop Mewtwo. Dark-types such as Yveltal, Arceus-Dark, and Darkrai deal with the Ghost-types that trouble Mewtwo, particularly Marshadow, Necrozma-DW, Lunala, and Aegislash. Fairy-types like Xerneas and Arceus-Fairy check Dark-types, and Arceus-Fairy is also able to deal with Marshadow defensively. Mewtwo can check Poison- and Steel-types in return. Setup sweepers such as Necrozma-DM, offensive Primal Groudon, Swords Dance Ultra Necrozma, and Extreme Killer Arceus appreciate Mewtwo's ability to weaken Pokemon such as Zygarde-C and Toxapex for a sweep. Bulky walls such as Primal Groudon, Arceus-Water, Arceus-Fairy, Zygarde-C, defensive Primal Kyogre, and defensive Yveltal can sponge attacks aimed at Mewtwo. Yveltal, Magearna, and Mega Scizor (if using regular Mewtwo) grant Mewtwo free and safe switches.

Moves Low Kick is a reliable and consistent STAB move that deals good damage to most targets due to how common heavy Pokemon are in the tier, 2HKOing Pokemon like Necrozma-DM, Arceus-Ground, and offensive Yveltal. Taunt shuts down support Arceus formes and other defensive Pokemon that may try to status Mewtwo, possibly forcing a switch. Ice Beam always OHKOes Mega Salamence and 2HKOes Zygarde-C while hitting Yveltal, Ultra Necrozma, and both Giratina formes hard. Stone Edge OHKOes Ho-Oh and does more damage to Yveltal than any of Mewtwo's other moves. Ice Beam + Stone Edge enables Mewtwo to break past all Ho-Oh, Zygarde-C, and Mega Salamence sets. Rock Slide can be used as an alternative to Stone Edge to still OHKO most Ho-Oh variants while having greater accuracy. STAB Zen Headbutt OHKOes Mega Gengar and Marshadow and hits Xerneas, but using it requires Mewtwo to forgo either Ice Beam or Stone Edge. Earthquake OHKOes Mega Gengar and dents Primal Groudon and Aegislash, but it is inferior to Zen Headbutt. Poison Jab or Iron Tail can be run to hit Fairy-types like Xerneas and Arceus-Fairy, but they are ineffective options outside of this. Recover along with a bulkier EV spread improves Mewtwo's longevity. Set Details Full Attack and Speed investment with a Jolly nature makes Mega Mewtwo X as fast and powerful as possible. 252 Speed EVs specifically allow it to outspeed Marshadow, Ultra Necrozma, and Naganadel. 252 Attack EVs notably give Mega Mewtwo X the ability to 2HKO defensive Primal Kyogre with Low Kick. An alternative EV spread of 176 Def / 80 SpD / 252 Spe with a Jolly nature gives Mega Mewtwo X significantly increased bulk that allows it to check threats like Mega Lucario and Extreme Killer Arceus, surviving Mega Lucario's Meteor Mash followed by boosted Bullet Punch after Meteor Mash's Attack raise and Life Orb Extreme Killer Arceus's +2 Extreme Speed. The 80 Special Defense EVs let Mega Mewtwo X avoid the OHKO from Mega Gengar's Shadow Ball after it has been trapped and take two neutral Judgments from support Arceus formes even after Stealth Rock damage. Note that Mega Mewtwo X will have a very noticeable power drop. Mewtwonite X is used to become Mega Mewtwo X, granting Mewtwo a secondary Fighting typing, higher Attack, and increased bulk. Mewtwo gains Steadfast upon Mega Evolution, which is situationally useful against Choice Scarf variants of Shaymin-S and Genesect. Usage Tips Mega Mewtwo X works best as an early- and mid-game wallbreaker that weakens checks for another Pokemon on your team to sweep. Because it is very fast, it can also be used to revenge kill slower threats with Low Kick or sweep on its own if the opposition is weakened enough. Mewtwo should be brought in safely by double switching or using a pivot, since it isn't bulky enough to switch into a powerful attack. Low Kick dents almost all Pokemon hit by it; Mewtwo should use this move as much as possible when wallbreaking. Taunt should be used liberally on defensive Pokemon to prevent them from using recovery, status, and utility moves. If Mega Mewtwo X has Ice Beam, it can stay in on Mega Salamence and Rayquaza and OHKO them. Similarly, Mewtwo can stay in on Ho-Oh and OHKO it if running Stone Edge. When using a set that is walled by Toxapex, it is often better to risk being burned and go for Taunt to prevent Toxic Spikes from being set up, followed by switching to a counter. One can opt to bluff a special attacking Mewtwo set in order to get a surprise KO. For example, sending Mewtwo in against a physical wall might entice the opponent to switch into a special wall like Alolan Muk, in which case Mega Evolving Mewtwo to hit them with a powerful Low Kick can lead to a quicker KO. Mega Mewtwo X can OHKO some boosted threats that Mega Mewtwo Y cannot, such as Calm Mind-boosted Arceus-Dark; therefore, if they stay in thinking Mewtwo cannot KO them, Mega Evolving Mewtwo will surprise them and stop a potential sweep. Team Options Entry hazards help Mega Mewtwo X pressure the opposing team more. Primal Groudon, Necrozma-DM, Cloyster, and Dialga all have access to hazards. Primal Groudon, Necrozma-DM, and Ho-Oh check Xerneas. Mewtwo beats Zygarde-C for them in return as well as checking Arceus-Rock and Tyranitar for Ho-Oh. Dark-types such as Yveltal, Arceus-Dark, and Darkrai deal with the Ghost-types that trouble Mewtwo, particularly Lunala, Necrozma-DW, Arceus-Ghost, and Marshadow, as well as Necrozma-DM. Yveltal and Magearna give Mewtwo safe switches thanks to their pivoting moves.

Moves Psystrike serves as the obligatory STAB move, dealing a lot of damage to neutral foes and circumventing dedicated special walls. Fire Blast allows Mewtwo to roast Steel-types that resist Psystrike, including Aegislash, Ferrothorn, Scizor, Jirachi, and Klefki. Ice Beam hits Mega Salamence, Arceus-Ground, Yveltal, and Lugia for super effective damage, while Shadow Ball is also a potential move which helps Mewtwo against Lugia, Aegislash, and Arceus-Ghost. Electro Ball hits Mega Sableye extremely hard, OHKOing it after a Calm Mind boost, but has no other targets otherwise. Calm Mind can be used as a setup move which can significantly pressure many teams, as a +1 Psystrike smashes most neutral foes and makes Mewtwo difficult to stop in conjunction with its high base Speed. Taunt can be used over it to avoid status such as paralysis, annoy support Pokemon, and match up well against bulkier stall and balance teams in general. Alternatively, Focus Blast allows Mewtwo to hit Steel-types such as Ferrothorn and Dialga and Dark-types such as Arceus-Dark, Tyranitar, and Darkrai super effectively, but its poor accuracy makes it an inferior choice. Set Details Maximum Speed investment with a Timid nature is used to take advantage of Mewtwo's great Speed tier. 252 Special Attack EVs maximize Mewtwo's offensive capabilities, allowing it to most efficiently fulfill its role as a fast, strong special attacker. Investing 4 Defense EVs gives Mewtwo a minimal buffer against physical attacks, though this is mostly insignificant and can also go in Special Defense. It is worth noting that investing in Special Defense on the Life Orb set will give Genesect an Attack boost, which may not be desired. Life Orb is the optimal item to be used with four attacks on Mewtwo; however, Mewtwonite Y is the better item for Taunt and Calm Mind sets. Mega Mewtwo Y's ability, Insomnia, gives it an immunity to Darkrai's Dark Void and Smeargle's Spore, which is something to keep in mind. Usage Tips When using Mewtwo, it is best to try to get it in safely, as it is not especially bulky. In fact, Mega Mewtwo Y's physical bulk is notably lacking, and damage can add up quickly for the Life Orb variant if it is forced to take too many hits. Mewtwo works very effectively in the mid-game to weaken checks for another Pokemon, and it can also clean late-game itself. If running Taunt, it should be used liberally against support Pokemon to prevent recovery, support moves such as Defog, and status moves, which Mewtwo dislikes, especially paralysis. It can be an effective strategy to delay Mewtwo's Mega Evolution if running Mewtwonite Y, as Mewtwo's base forme has a higher base Defense. With that being said, it is vital to weigh the importance of having a higher base Speed and Special Defense. In general, Mewtwo has trouble outright OHKOing a fair number of targets, so using the appropriate coverage move and getting prior damage on opposing Pokemon can be essential to Mewtwo's success. Team Options Fairy-types, such as Klefki and Xerneas, are good partners for Mewtwo, as it appreciates Dark-type Pokemon being checked. Xerneas especially appreciates that Mewtwo can weaken or remove a lot of its Steel-type checks, which allows it to be effective late-game. Similarly, Extreme Killer Arceus appreciates Mewtwo weakening its Ghost-type checks. Dark-types, such as Arceus-Dark, Darkrai, and Yveltal, can check Ghost-types which threaten Mewtwo. Because Mewtwo does not enjoy taking hits throughout the course of a battle, tanks and bulky pivots that can take hits for Mewtwo pair well with it. For example, physically defensive sets for both Yveltal and Salamence can sponge attacks nicely. Finally, Volt Switch and U-turn can grant Mewtwo free switches, so users of these moves make for good teammates. Genesect, Scizor, and Yveltal can all use U-turn, while Zekrom is a viable user of Volt Switch.

Moves Low Kick is a powerful STAB move that reliably hits with 120 Base Power thanks to the general weight of the Pokemon in the Ubers metagame. Taunt allows for a way to block Will-O-Wisp, paralysis, and other status, or force out some walls that may threaten to stop Mewtwo. Earthquake is a nice coverage move to hit Aegislash and Groudon pretty hard, as well as Mega Gengar and some Steel- and Rock-types which are neutral to Low Kick or very light such as Jirachi, Klefki, and Diancie, respectively. Ice Punch hits Flying-types such as Salamence, Rayquaza, Yveltal, and Lugia; bulky Ground-types such as Landorus-T; and Latias, Latios, and Giratina-O for super effective damage. Ice Beam can be used instead of Ice Punch in order to hit Salamence harder, but it is significantly weaker against Latias and Latios. Stone Edge hits the aforementioned Flying-types and also can OHKO Ho-Oh. Rock Slide can be used over Stone Edge for more accuracy, as it still OHKOes most Ho-Oh variants. Zen Headbutt is a possible secondary STAB move which achieves pretty solid coverage with Low Kick, but it does not target many specific threats. Finally, Poison Jab or Iron Tail can be used for Fairy-types, though they are ineffective move options outside of this. Set Details 252 Speed EVs with a Jolly nature and 112 Attack EVs are run in order to take advantage of Mega Mewtwo X's sky-high 190 Attack stat and great Speed tier. 144 Defense EVs give Mewtwo a significant increase to physical bulk, allowing it to survive a +2 Extreme Speed from Life Orb Extreme Killer Arceus after Stealth Rock damage, assuming that Mewtwo has Mega Evolved already. If Mega Mewtwo X elects to use Ice Beam, a Naive nature should be run. The item choice of Mewtwonite X is self-explanatory and necessary to access Mega Mewtwo X's typing and stats, which greatly differ from those of the base forme. An alternate spread of 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe can be used to allow Mega Mewtwo X to hit as hard as possible at the expense of reliably checking Extreme Killer Arceus. The ability Steadfast, which Mewtwo gains upon Mega Evolution, does have a small niche in giving Mewtwo a Speed boost when Choice Scarf variants of both Genesect and Shaymin-S cause it to flinch, after which it avoids further flinches from these Pokemon. Usage Tips Taunt should be used against support Pokemon to prevent Defog, recovery, status, and other support moves so Mewtwo's team can keep up its entry hazards and help overwhelm and weaken Pokemon so that a teammate might be able to clean or sweep later on. The type change when Mega Evolving can catch some threats off-guard, as Mewtwo gains neutrality to Dark- and Bug-type moves as well as a resistance to Rock, which can be advantageous when timed properly. Try to maintain and take advantage of Mewtwo's unpredictability to net a surprise KO or two, as the checks for Mewtwo's sets greatly differ, meaning that many can be caught off-guard by a strong physical attack. Team Options Checks to Fairy-types are important partners, as this Mewtwo variant is especially weak to them. These include Groudon, Ho-Oh, Klefki, Aegislash, and Jirachi. Dark-types, such as Arceus-Dark, Darkrai, and Yveltal, are useful to check Ghost- and Psychic-type Pokemon. Geomancy Xerneas and Extreme Killer Arceus are great offensive partners which both benefit from Mewtwo's ability to weaken their checks. Again, U-turn and Volt Switch users such as Genesect, Scizor, Yveltal, and Zekrom give Mewtwo free switches, which it can capitalize on.

Mewtwo's power and excellent Speed let it outpace many dangerous threats and be a decent revenge killer. With a Choice Scarf, it reaches 591 Speed, outspeeding anything not at +2. Besides revenge killing, Mewtwo can also clean late-game when its counters, such as Lugia, are weakened. Psystrike is for STAB and is generally Mewtwo's most powerful move, but beware of trappers such as Tyranitar coming in for free. Thanks to Psystrike, Mewtwo has a good chance of breaking past Blissey and Chansey with entry hazard support. Mewtwo easily OHKOes Pokemon such as Rayquaza and Salamence with Ice Beam. Fire Blast, Flamethrower and Aura Sphere let it revenge kill Excadrill and most Steel-types. Additionally, it's good to have Aura Sphere in there somewhere for neutral-Speed-natured SmashPass recipients such as Dialga, as well as Choice Scarf Darkrai. Aura Sphere is also Mewtwo's only option to 2HKO defensive Tyranitar, and nails Heatran for solid damage too. Trick can let Mewtwo cripple a wall, such as Lugia and Giratina, which would both be more willing to switch in if they see no Life Orb recoil. It can also surprise Latias and Latios by removing their prized Soul Dew. The EV spread listed gives Mewtwo maximizes Mewtwo's Speed, letting it outspeed Kingdra in the rain, Adamant Excadrill in the sand, Choice Scarf Shaymin-S, Darkrai, Venusaur, and Shiftry in the sun, and Rock Polish Adamant Groudon. It also lets Mewtwo continue to outspeed unboosted threats if it has Tricked its Choice Scarf away. However, since Mewtwo is so fast, it can afford to invest in bulk or a Modest nature if outspeeding the aforementioned threats are not crucial for your team. A spread of 52 HP / 252 SpA / 204 Spe and a Modest nature outspeeds Choice Scarf Terrakion. 176 HP / 252 SpA / 80 Spe with a Timid nature also outpaces Terrakion, but focuses more on bulk. 240 HP / 252 SpA / 16 Spe outspeeds +1 base 100s. Mewtwo has some other coverage moves it can use thanks to its wide movepool. Thunder can be used to hit Kyogre harder but will fail to OHKO or even 2HKO specially defensive Kyogre, generally making Psystrike the safer option to hit the whale. Shadow Ball is another option to hit opposing Mewtwo, Lugia, Arceus-Ghost, Wobbuffet and Giratina, but is a really weak move otherwise. Mewtwo still can't revenge kill ExtremeKiller Arceus, so you'll need something else for it—Aura Sphere will only 2HKO Arceus while a boosted Extreme Speed will OHKO Mewtwo. If running Fire Blast, sun support is good for maximum power; in the sun, Fire Blast is even stronger than Psystrike. Wobbuffet can easily trap this Mewtwo, so you will have to predict carefully when you see one. Watch out for entry hazard layers such as Ferrothorn and Forretress, as they can switch into pretty much any move besides Fire Blast and Aura Sphere. Mewtwo can no longer break walls as effectively with this set, as the power reduction is rather significant, even standard Great Wall Giratina will never be 2HKOed by Ice Beam. However, they will need to watch out for Trick.

This set maximizes Mewtwo's bulk, allowing it to set up Calm Mind with greater ease but sacrificing Mewtwo's immediate destructive power for greater longevity. With Calm Mind and Recover, Mewtwo can slowly boost in front of special attackers. This set is particularly useful on sand teams and teams that are more susceptible to Fighting-types such as Arceus-Fighting. Normally, entry hazard damage and sandstorm recoil can easily whittle Mewtwo down, but this set allows Mewtwo to stick around for longer to counter threats such as Arceus-Fighting. Be aware, though, that this Mewtwo set has significant coverage issues. Psystrike is Mewtwo's STAB attack, and helps it win Calm Mind wars. Flamethrower allows Mewtwo to hit most Steel-types for super-effective damage, in particular OHKOing Genesect. This is especially important because with a bulky spread, Mewtwo can survive both U-turn and Bug Buzz from Choice Scarf Genesect. Flamethrower also allows Mewtwo to hit most Steel-types for super effective damage. Aura Sphere hits Tyranitar, Dialga, and Darkrai for super effective damage. Ice Beam might not appear to add significant coverage, but it does hit Lugia and Giratina for super effective damage, and being able to quickly OHKO Rayquaza is always nice as well. The EV spread used maximizes Mewtwo's bulk and Speed. While the 4 Defense EVs might not look like much, they prevent Genesect from getting an Attack boost. Given the nature of the set and potential use on sand teams, Leftovers is far and away the best item to use. This set exacerbates Mewtwo's already severe four-moveslot syndrome. Fire Blast can replace Flamethrower to hit Excadrill harder in the rain, as well as for more power in general. Taunt and Substitute can prevent status and phazing attempts. However, keep in mind that if Recover is dropped for one of these moves, Mewtwo will have a lot less staying power, which goes against the point of this set. As for move options, Thunder can be used to hit Kyogre harder while still hitting Lugia super effectively. Grass Knot can be used to take down Groudon easily, while Shadow Ball is Mewtwo's most powerful attack against Wobbuffet. This set in particular has many counters no matter what move Mewtwo runs. Without Flamethrower, it will be walled by Steel-types. Even with Flamethrower, Genesect is a major thorn in Mewtwo's side. Scizor will also make life hell for Mewtwo that lack Flamethrower by checkmating it with Pursuit and U-turn, while Skarmory can take Aura Spheres and Ice Beams and force Mewtwo out with Whirlwind. If Mewtwo lacks Aura Sphere, Tyranitar walls Mewtwo and checkmates it with Pursuit, while Dialga can take attacks from it and either Roar it out or poison it with Toxic. In general, Lugia and Giratina wall Mewtwo, although they will not enjoy taking boosted Ice Beams for too long. Genesect is very difficult to pin down and take out, but entry hazards will limit Genesect's ability to continually U-turn in and out. If you can lock it into an attack that is not U-turn or Bug Buzz, Wobbuffet can trap and KO it. While Pursuit is inescapable, Pokemon such as Arceus-Fighting, Groudon, Landorus, and Gliscor can all set up on Tyranitar easily. Arceus-Fighting is also good for taking down Dialga. Finally, Lugia and Giratina are setup bait for entry hazard users, such as Skarmory, Ferrothorn, and Forretress.

If there is one set in the game that embodies the word "uncounterable", this is probably it. Mewtwo's blazing base 130 Speed and sky-high base 154 Special Attack make it a terrifying sweeper and end-game cleaner. Psystrike allows Mewtwo to take out all sorts of special walls, namely Blissey, Chansey, Ho-Oh, and Kyogre, without needing to waste EVs in Attack, by striking (pun unintended) their weaker Defense. Between Aura Sphere, Ice Beam, and Fire Blast, Mewtwo hits everything that resists Psystrike. Aura Sphere destroys the likes of Tyranitar and Darkrai, while doing a lot of damage to Dialga. Ice Beam brings down Lugia and Giratina, especially physically defensive variants. Fire Blast fries Genesect, Scizor, and Ferrothorn, and is Mewtwo's most powerful option in the sun, OHKOing bulky threats such as Jirachi and Arceus-Steel, as well as Lugia, after Stealth Rock damage. Calm Mind pushes Mewtwo's Special Attack to even higher levels, allowing it to take down walls effectively. It also makes Mewtwo surprisingly resilient on the special side, letting it take attacks such as Draco Meteor from Choice Scarf Palkia. Without Calm Mind, Pokemon such as Lugia, Giratina, and 252/0 Arceus avoid being 2HKOed by its attacks. As for move selection, Psystrike along with three coverage moves is a fine choice. Four attacks Mewtwo is preferable, since setup opportunities are usually quite limited for it. Calm Mind, however, makes Mewtwo much harder to wall. The best moveset for Calm Mind Mewtwo is Calm Mind, Psystrike, Aura Sphere, and Ice Beam, which retains excellent coverage while hitting Lugia and Giratina, the two bulkiest walls in the tier, for super effective damage. If you can give Mewtwo sun support, Fire Blast should replace Ice Beam due to its power and coverage, especially against Genesect. The only Pokemon that stands a chance of walling Calm Mind Mewtwo in the sun is physically defensive Giratina, who can phaze Mewtwo out with Dragon Tail, but even it risks getting 2HKOed by Psystrike. While Fire Blast Mewtwo is the most potent variant, rain's popularity makes Fire Blast less attractive for teams that don't have sun support. The moves listed above gives Mewtwo best all-around coverage, but they can be replaced if other moves better fit your team. Recover allows Mewtwo to mitigate some of the heavy residual damage that it tends to take. Grass Knot hits Groudon and Kyogre for super effective damage, in particular OHKOing all Groudon, which Ice Beam can fail to do. Thunder hits Lugia and Kyogre super effectively while hitting most Steel-types hard. Shadow Ball is Mewtwo's strongest attack against Wobbuffet, Lugia, and Arceus-Ghost in the rain, while Flamethrower can be used over Fire Blast if you value accuracy. Blizzard is an inaccurate move, but it does allow Mewtwo to 2HKO Specially Defensive Giratina without a boost after Stealth Rock damage, if you hit. Charge Beam allows Mewtwo to quickly finish off a weakened Pokemon and potentially get a Special Attack boost. Taunt can prevent walls from recovering health and can be used in place of Calm Mind. The given EV spread maximizes Mewtwo's Speed and Special Attack. 4 Defense EVs are used so Genesect gets a Special Attack boost instead of an Attack boost to minimize U-turn damage. Life Orb is preferred to make Mewtwo as powerful as possible, but other items let Mewtwo set up more Calm Minds. If you are turned off by the recoil, Leftovers can lengthen Mewtwo's lifespan, but the power drop is very significant, losing out on 2HKOs against Giratina, 252/0 Arceus, and Lugia at +1. Like Leftovers, Lum Berry lessens Mewtwo's power, but can allow Mewtwo to set up on status-inflicting Pokemon such as Thunder Wave Ferrothorn. Expert Belt gives Mewtwo conditional power while conserving its Mewtwo's health. Even though it does not boost Psystrike most of the time, Mewtwo's coverage is enough to hit most targets for super effective damage. On the other hand, Mind Plate boosts only Psystrike and not Mewtwo's coverage moves. With Mind Plate, Psystrike is still powerful enough to 2HKO specially defensive Giratina and Latias, and OHKO 252/0 Kyogre after Stealth Rock damage. The only things that keep Mewtwo in check are Choice Scarf users, priority attacks, residual damage, and its inability to cover all threats with four moves. If Mewtwo lacks Fire Blast, Scizor can checkmate it with Pursuit and U-turn, while Jirachi can take anything it dishes out and paralyze it with Body Slam. Metagross can also do lots of damage in return, while not taking much from Aura Sphere. If Mewtwo lacks Aura Sphere, Tyranitar destroys it with no trouble at all, while Dialga, Arceus-Dark, and Darkrai can be troublesome outside of sunny weather. If Mewtwo forgoes Ice Beam, then Lugia counters Mewtwo without sun, while Giratina becomes a big problem. If Calm Mind is omitted, Mewtwo has a hard time against defensive teams in general, especially those with Latias, Lugia, or Giratina in them. Most Ubers teams plan to take down Mewtwo via a Choice Scarf user, as few Pokemon can actually wall it. It should be noted that not many Choice Scarf users can actually OHKO a healthy Mewtwo, but Life Orb recoil and entry hazards can put it in KO range. Most Choice Scarf users require at least one round of Life Orb recoil in addition to Stealth Rock damage to OHKO Mewtwo. The exceptions to this are Kyogre (with full HP Water Spout), Modest Reshiram in the sun, Adamant Kyurem-B and Zekrom, Heracross, Victini, and finally Genesect. Genesect in particular is problematic for Mewtwo, since it can deal massive damage to Mewtwo with U-turn, and avoid being locked into an attack that might be advantageous for another sweeper to set up on. Genesect is a nightmare to try and pin down, but some ways to make life difficult for it is to heavily stack on entry hazards, and try to hit it hard on the switch (Psystrike does a lot of damage, while Fire attacks OHKO it). Wobbuffet can remove most Choice Scarf users, with the exception of those just mentioned. Luring out Choice Scarf users with Thunder Wave Kyogre or other Thunder Wave users is a good strategy. Kyogre tends to lure in Choice Scarf Palkia and Zekrom, as well as Latias. If you do have sun support, though, removing Choice Scarf Kyogre is not too difficult with Wobbuffet, as you can sacrifice Groudon to Kyogre to bring in the sun, then use Wobbuffet to trap and remove Kyogre, keeping the rest of the match sunny. Sacrificing Hippowdon or Tyranitar when using a sand team has a similar effect. Reshiram is difficult to deal with if you are using a sun team, but is easy for rain and sand teams to take on. Victini can be trapped and KOed by Tyranitar or other Pursuit users that are not weak to its attacks. Heracross is walled by many Pokemon, such as the Giratina formes and Groudon. Lastly, as previously mentioned, Thunder Wave Kyogre tends to lure in Choice Scarf Palkia and Zekrom, as well as Latias, a wall that gives Mewtwo trouble. Residual damage has been mentioned, but it should be stressed that Life Orb and entry hazard damage allow priority attacks and Choice Scarf users to pick Mewtwo off. Rapid Spin and Magic Bounce users will mitigate entry hazard damage. For offensive teams that tend to carry Mewtwo, Custap Berry Forretress, Kabutops, and Excadrill are all good offensive Rapid Spin users, while Xatu and Espeon provide Magic Bounce for the team. Wish support from Blissey or Jirachi can help Mewtwo, but is not always necessary. In terms of offensive pressure and synergy, sometimes it is best to just stack sweepers with good offensive synergy with Mewtwo. Rock Polish Groudon and Landorus-T can set up on Choice Scarf Zekrom; Scizor, Arceus-Steel, and Bisharp can set up on Choice-locked Dragon-type attacks. Latias can set up on Choice Scarf Kyogre, as can Water-resistant Arceus formes. ExtremeKiller Arceus can set up on most Choice Scarf users besides Choice Scarf Terrakion, which cannot defeat Mewtwo. Dual Screen support also benefits Mewtwo, since they prevent most revenge killers from easily KOing Mewtwo. While Wobbuffet does not have particularly good synergy with Mewtwo, it can still Encore setup moves such as Calm Mind, giving Mewtwo a free setup opportunity.

Defensive Mewtwo seems rather weird, but it is surprisingly effective. It is especially useful against opposing stall teams thanks to Mewtwo's great Speed and support movepool, traits that let it stall out a wide variety of threats. Taunt forces defensive Pokemon to hit it with weak attacks instead of healing or using support moves, allowing Mewtwo to easily stall them out. Recover in conjunction with Mewtwo's Speed allows it to heal before most things can even touch it, making it extremely hard to break. Furthermore, when combined with Pressure, Recover can easily sap up all of the opponent's PP. This is handy in a tier filled with 8 PP moves such as Spacial Rend and Draco Meteor. Once again, four-moveslot syndrome kicks in for Mewtwo. Will-O-Wisp allows Mewtwo to stall out physical attackers quite effectively, letting it repeatedly heal while they slowly die to burn damage, and easily cripples many initial switch-ins to Mewtwo, such as Genesect and Tyranitar. Toxic does more damage in the long run, and hits Fire-types outside of Heatran, with the downside of leaving Mewtwo helpless against Steel-types and without a way to cushion the blows of physical powerhouses such as Zekrom and Groudon. As such, Will-O-Wisp is usually the better option because Mewtwo's defenses, while not especially low, are not amazing either. Psystrike is Mewtwo's only option to hit Ho-Oh and Reshiram if you are running Will-O-Wisp. It also lets Mewtwo prevent powerful attackers such as Kyogre and Kyurem-W from switching in for free. Light Screen lets Mewtwo sponge all but the most powerful of special attacks, and makes Mewtwo hard to crack when used with Will-O-Wisp. Substitute is useful for scouting a switch in and preventing status. It also lets Mewtwo Pressure stall more effectively. As a bonus, Mewtwo's Substitute is strong enough to survive most Dragon Tails, while Roar and Whirlwind are blocked by Taunt. Without Substitute, stall teams can still Dragon Tail Mewtwo out, which can get annoying when combined with entry hazards. There is very little reason to run any item other than Leftovers. While Mewtwo really specializes in neutering things with Taunt + Status + Recover spam, it will often rely on prediction between status and Taunt (Gyro Ball vs Leech Seed on Ferrothorn, for example). One wrong move can prove fatal. The given EVs maximize bulk while allowing Mewtwo to outspeed Tornadus-T. Otherwise, you can run enough Speed to outspeed Darkrai (216 EVs with a Timid nature), or, if outspeeding Arceus isn't a concern, drop it down to enough to outspeed base 110s Pokemon such as Latias, Latios, and Lugia (96 EVs with a Timid nature). 88 EVs and a neutral nature let Mewtwo outspeed base 95s such as Rayquaza and Kyurem-W. Mewtwo can even go physically defensive, by shifting the Special Defense EVs to Defense. Without Light Screen, powerful special attackers can demolish Mewtwo, although not many like taking even an uninvested Psystrike (252/0 Kyogre has a good chance to be 2HKOed after Stealth Rock). Chansey and Blissey can easily sponge special attacks if you forgo Light Screen for Psystrike, making them excellent partners. Mewtwo in return can easily switch in on Fighting-type moves such as Close Combat, and OHKO most Fighting-types with Psystrike. Psystrike also KOes Tentacruel, which can Rapid Spin on Mewtwo as well. One of the great things about this Mewtwo set is that it completely rewrites the list of Pokemon that can check or counter it; defensive or bulky Pokemon hoping to tank a hit from Mewtwo and cripple it through non-attacking methods are now easily neutered. Darkrai, Ho-Oh, and Reshiram are the biggest enemies to this set if Mewtwo is running Will-O-Wisp. Darkrai doesn't really care about anything Mewtwo can run besides Toxic and can smash it with Dark Pulse or sleep it with Dark Void. Be aware though, that with the right prediction, Mewtwo can use Light Screen to cushion Dark Pulse and prevent Dark Void with Taunt, so taking out Mewtwo with Darkrai might not be simple. Ho-Oh and Reshiram don't really appreciate Psystrike, but can wall Mewtwo to no end if it lacks both Psystrike and Toxic. Stealth Rock support and something to deal with them is helpful if you forgo both of these moves. Kyogre can take care of these Fire-types as well as Darkrai, provided that Sleep Clause is activated or Kyogre is running a Sleep Talk set. Your own Ho-Oh can also help deal with Reshiram and Darkrai. Toxic Spikes completely neuter this Mewtwo set, so a spinner or absorber (such as Forretress, Tentacruel, Excadrill, Arceus-Poison) is almost mandatory. Toxic Spikes support of your own might conflict with the use of Will-O-Wisp, but they notably allow Mewtwo to simply Taunt and begin spamming Recover without having to waste a turn using Toxic or Will-O-Wisp. Like most defensive Pokemon, this set appreciates entry hazard support for the switching it will cause, especially against stall teams. Xatu easily shuts this set down with Magic Bounce unless you are willing to use Ice Beam over Psystrike, which is not recommended. Heatran will also annoy this set due to its immunity to both burn and poison and resistance to Psystrike. Either Kyogre or Zekrom can help deal with both Heatran and Xatu. Prankster users such as Sableye, Thundurus, and Tornadus can Taunt Mewtwo before it Taunts them, though the latter two have to watch out for Psystrike. Kyogre can also take down most of them without much effort, although it will need a Choice Scarf to outspeed Thundurus.

This is a bulkier Mewtwo who focuses on being able to take hits better while setting up. Calm Mind is once again the crux of the set, boosting Mewtwo's Special Attack and Special Defense to very high levels before attempting a sweep. This time however, Mewtwo focuses of using either Substitute or Recover to help set up. Substitute gives Mewtwo a shield against users of Pursuit (Scizor, Metagross, and Tyranitar come to mind) and revenge killers such as Choice Scarf Palkia, allowing you to switch out to a more suitable counter without being utterly annihilated. Substitute also gives Mewtwo some protection against status users such as Blissey and Lugia. (Beware if the latter has Whirlwind to phaze you as you are setting up.) Recover allows Mewtwo to take hits while setting up, decreasing its vulnerability to revenge killers as well as letting it set up in any point of the game. It is a good idea to switch Mewtwo into a burn or one layer of Toxic Spikes, as that way Mewtwo cannot be paralyzed or slapped with Toxic. The residual damage with burn or normal poison is easily taken care of with Recover, and it makes Mewtwo almost unbreakable for stall teams since it cannot be hit with Toxic. Ice Beam and Aura Sphere are the best offensive options for this set. Ice Beam hits the plethora of Dragon-type Pokemon for lethal damage while Aura Sphere takes care of Tyranitar, Darkrai, and most Steel-types. If one wishes for it, Aura Sphere can be dropped to use both Substitute and Recover. This way Mewtwo can block status and deflect Pursuit while being able to heal itself, making it into a quite dangerous Pokemon for defensive teams to try and fight off. However, if you go this route, Magneton or Magnezone support is highly recommended to take care of any Steel-types. With Ice Beam as its sole attack, Mewtwo will be totally and completely walled by them. 204 HP allows Mewtwo to make 101 HP Substitutes, meaning that Blissey will not be able to break the Substitute with one Seismic Toss, allowing Mewtwo to set up on Blissey. Maximum Speed allows Mewtwo to tie with other maximum Speed Mewtwo and to outpace anything slower than Shaymin-S. The rest of the EVs goes into Special Attack for a little extra oomph. Leftovers is the preferred item to use, as it allows Mewtwo to take hits a little better while boosting with Calm Mind. This set and the previous set share similar counters, so any partner for the Taunt + Calm Mind set will also work very well with this one. However, this Mewtwo is extremely prone to getting trapped and KOed by Wobbuffet, as Mewtwo can do nothing to stop Encore, forcing it to either let Wobbuffet KO it with Mirror Coat or let another Pokemon set up for a sweep. Without Substitute, Blissey will be a huge problem as Toxic or Thunder Wave will render Mewtwo incapable of sweeping. The best way to save Mewtwo from those dangerous foes is to lure them out and KO them with a mixed attacker such as Lustrous Orb Palkia or Expert Belt Dialga. The opponent will often be fooled into thinking they are holding a Choice item and switch in their Wobbuffet or Blissey only to be slapped with a lethal physical attack such as Outrage, bypassing Wobbuffet's Mirror Coat and likely 2HKOing Blissey. This gives Mewtwo a clear shot at setting up. Toxic Spikes is also useful to wear down Wobbuffet, Blissey, and other defensive Pokemon to help Mewtwo break through them. It is also particularly useful if Mewtwo has Recover. Forretress can set up them easily since it resists all of Mewtwo's weaknesses. It can also use Rapid Spin to get rid of Toxic Spikes and other entry hazards from Mewtwo's side of the field, which could compromise its sweeping potential. A mixed Giratina-O is a good partner if using Forretress to stop the opponent from getting rid of your Toxic Spikes. Giratina can also stop Blissey quite easily with Outrage, and it can help get rid of Wobbuffet since the blue blob cannot use Counter on Giratina-O's physical attacks.

Mewtwo's high Special Attack means it is undoubtedly capable of dealing lots of damage, but often Mewtwo fails to find turns to utilize it, mostly because of the high usage of Choice Scarf in Ubers. Giving Mewtwo a Choice Scarf of its own immediately transforms it into an astonishingly quick revenge killer, and Mewtwo's solid defenses also allow it to take a hit or two late-game, where it is often able to clean up the opponent's team with a move of choice. Ice Beam, Thunder, and Grass Knot are Mewtwo's best attacking options for a set designed to revenge kill and check offensive threats. Together, you hit your main revenge kill targets--Rayquaza, Groudon, and Kyogre--for super effective damage. Rayquaza can threaten teams via either Swords Dance or Dragon Dance, but Mewtwo will always be able to take a +2 Life Orb Extreme Speed (even after Stealth Rock) and OHKO back with Ice Beam, whereas Dragon Dance versions are much less threatening and can only muster up to a maximum of 65% damage with a +1 Adamant Life Orb Extreme Speed. Mewtwo also checks Rock Polish Groudon, as Mewtwo outspeeds all Adamant +2 Groudon and deals 85-100% damage to 112 HP / 0 SpD Groudon, which is an OHKO after Stealth Rock and one turn of Life Orb recoil. Admittedly, +2 Jolly Groudon is not outsped, but it will fail to OHKO Mewtwo with a Life Orb Earthquake, even after two switches into Stealth Rock. In a straight 1v1 situation, Kyogre will beat Choice Scarf Mewtwo, but the 62% minimum damage to 4 HP / 0 SpD Kyogre with either Thunder or Grass Knot is hardly shabby. Kyogre also runs the risk of being crippled by paralysis from Thunder. If one is using this Mewtwo in a sun-centric team, Flamethrower is the preferred option in slot three so Mewtwo can still hit Steel-types, such as Scizor and Forretress, for good damage. Kyogre and Lugia will still be covered by Grass Knot and Ice Beam, respectively, although without Thunder Mewtwo will not be able to deal significant damage to Ho-Oh. Trick is the best general move for the last slot, as it allows you to play mind games and plan out a strong late-game plan, also crippling Blissey and Latias. However, there are other options. Aura Sphere will help against Darkrai and Dialga (and can alternatively be changed for the much riskier Focus Blast). Self-Destruct can damage most Pokemon even with a hindering nature (Mewtwo needs its defenses), and can put the pain on Blissey and Latias. Mewtwo's downfalls with this set are its hugely exploitable Pursuit weakness, and its ability to be trapped and easily KOed by Wobbuffet. Forretress makes a superb supporting teammate, easily Spiking/Rapid Spinning on Choiced Scizor and Tyranitar stuck on Pursuit, while also being able to Spike against Wobbuffet. Wobbuffet can Encore, but in reality most Uber threats are setting up on Forretress anyway, so its importance is often not great. Choice Specs Dialga can blast holes in opposing teams, especially if an opponent's Scizor has been weakened, or their Blissey Tricked. A bulky Kyogre also goes very well with Mewtwo, providing rain so that Thunder is 100% accurate, while also being able to sponge status and weaker special attacks if using Rest. Stacking up on fast and powerful sweepers such as Rayquaza, Lucario, and Darkrai is suggested, so you can fully utilize Mewtwo's ability to check lots of dangerous setup Pokemon who would otherwise destroy strong but frail teams.

This Mewtwo works very well as a team supporter as it is centered around preventing your opponent from setting up their strategies or using status moves, while raising protective screens to double the defenses of your team. While this set is almost identical to Deoxys-S' "Dual Screens" set, Mewtwo has significantly higher base HP, so it can oftentimes set up the screens more reliably. Self-Destruct allows Mewtwo to take down a Pokemon after setting up while allowing a free switch in for another teammate. Taunt, in conjunction with Mewtwo's high base Speed, allows Mewtwo to shut down any slower support leads such as Dialga and Groudon. Under a Light Screen, Mewtwo will always outpace, set up a Light Screen and survive a Choice Specs Kyogre's Water Spout and a Choice Specs Dialga's Draco Meteor. Likewise, Reflect + Taunt, easily stops supporting Groudon and Bulk Up Dialga from doing any major damage. Light Clay is the preferred item for this set. It boosts the length of screens from five turns to eight, a welcome addition to any team in the fast-paced Uber metagame. Mewtwo mainly dislikes Pokemon who will hamper its set up. Scizor, Mixed Dialga, and Mixed Rayquaza commonly carry Brick Break, which breaks the screens, and all three of them can take advantage of this opening to KO Mewtwo. Mewtwo also hates Pokemon with a faster Taunt. Fortunately, this usually only applies to Deoxys-S, who is almost always a suicide lead and is usually KOed early on in the match. While Ghost-types are immune to Brick Break, most of them can't handle Scizor, Mixed Dialga, or Mixed Rayquaza by themselves. Choice Scarf Gengar probably comes the closest, as it can come in on Brick Break and inflict serious damage to Scizor with Hidden Power Fire, Dialga with Focus Blast, and Rayquaza with Hidden Power Ice. (You will have to choose which Hidden Power to use depending on whether you want to OHKO Scizor or Rayquaza. It should be noted, however, that Scizor will still take a lot of damage from Focus Blast, as will Rayquaza from Shadow Ball.) Garchomp will not take too much from Brick Break, and also has a super effective attack for Scizor (Fire Fang), Dialga (Earthquake), and Rayquaza (Dragon Claw). However, the best teammates for this Mewtwo are Pokemon who benefit from its screens. There aren't any Pokemon who won't benefit from dual screens, but there are a few who stand out. Mew can easily capitalize on the protection of the screens to use stat up moves such as Rock Polish and Swords Dance, allowing it to then Baton Pass the stats to a recipient such as Groudon, which will often spell death for your opponent if successful. Speaking of Groudon, a Rock Polish and Swords Dance set can easily take advantage of its bolstered defenses to use both boosting moves, and then go on to ravage the opponent's team. Users of Substitute, such as Giratina-O, benefit greatly from dual screens, as they often get more time to stat up thanks to screens making their Substitutes harder to break. Any other sweepers, especially ones such as Rayquaza, Lucario, and Garchomp who only need one turn to wreak havoc on your opponent, will enjoy dual screen support, as it can give them more opportunities to set up and it makes them harder to revenge kill.

With just a Life Orb in hand, Mewtwo is capable of at least 2HKOing almost every Pokemon in the Ubers metagame, thus making it a great revenge killer when combined with Mewtwo's blistering 130 base Speed. With Aura Sphere, Mewtwo becomes one of the best Darkrai revenge killers in the game, being able to always OHKO it as long as it is not holding Chople Berry. Aura Sphere will also 2HKO Dialga, Heatran, and specially defensive Tyranitar 100% of the time. Registeel is only 3HKOed by Aura Sphere, and thus should only be used if the weather is rainy or if you lack a Fire-type attack. Ice Beam complements Aura Sphere's coverage well, hitting the Flying-types who resist Aura Sphere super effectively, in addition to KOing several key Pokemon whom Aura Sphere can't. For example, Ice Beam will OHKO Rayquaza, Shaymin-S, and Garchomp, while naive Giratina-O has around a 20% chance of being OHKOed after Stealth Rock damage. Lugia and Latias are also 2HKOed 100% of the time by Ice Beam after Stealth Rock damage (watch out for Calm Mind Latias though), while the standard 112 HP Rock Polish Groudon will take 90% minimum from Ice Beam. Finally, Self-Destruct is Mewtwo's speedy suicidal finisher, being able to OHKO Blissey, Ho-Oh, and max HP Kyogre. Self-Destruct is also Life Orb Mewtwo's only way of defeating Wobbuffet, dealing 87.1%-100% to Calm Wobbuffet. If you desire a way to OHKO Ho-Oh without sacrificing Mewtwo, Stone Edge can be a good choice. The last move is chosen depending on what you want Mewtwo to revenge kill. Fire Blast is usually the best choice, as it will OHKO Both Scizor--a Pokemon who normally gives Mewtwo problems--and Forretress regardless of the weather. As long as it is not raining, Fire Blast will also OHKO Bronzong, Metagross, and specially defensive Jirachi. If used with Groudon's Drought, Fire Blast will do a massive amount of damage to most Pokemon who don't resist it. For example, in the sun, Fire Blast will OHKO offensive Mewtwo after it takes Stealth Rock damage, while Calm Wobbuffet is 2HKOed. If Fire Blast's accuracy puts you off, Flamethrower is a suitable replacement, though Forretress and some Scizor have a chance of surviving it in the rain. If defeating Steel-types isn't too important, Thunder can be a good choice with Kyogre's rain support. Thunder is Mewtwo's best chance at defeating Kyogre, dealing 84.2%-99.4% to 4 HP Kyogre, and 71.3%-84.2% to maximum HP Kyogre. Thunder will also allow Mewtwo to 2HKO Palkia, Lugia, Forretress, and most Scizor and Metagross. Finally, if you don't care about Steel-types or the weather, Grass Knot can be used to still 2HKO Palkia with a 100% accurate move in the sun, and OHKO 252 HP / 60 SpD Groudon around 79% of the time. Both Naive and Hasty are viable natures, and should be chosen based on whether you prefer Mewtwo to take less from priority attacks or special attacks. With a Naive nature, Adamant Lucario will only have a 41% chance to OHKO Mewtwo with a +2 Extreme Speed after Stealth Rock and Spikes damage, while Hasty Mewtwo will always be KOed by that under the same conditions. Naive Mewtwo will also only be 2HKOed by a Jolly Rayquaza's unboosted Extreme Speed around 19% of the time after Stealth Rock damage, while Hasty Mewtwo will be 2HKOed around 99% of the time after Stealth Rock damage. As for Hasty Mewtwo, it will survive a Choice Scarf Palkia's or Kyogre's Surf in the rain around 54% of the time after it takes Stealth Rock damage (allowing Mewtwo to Self-Destruct), while Naive Mewtwo is always OHKOed after Stealth Rock damage by the same attack. Additionally, Hasty Mewtwo will have around a 67% chance of surviving Choice Scarf Draco Meteors from Palkia and Dialga after Stealth Rock damage, while Naive Mewtwo is always OHKOed by the same attack after Stealth Rock damage. This Mewtwo set also works well in the lead position as it is capable of 2HKOing most of the common leads seen in Ubers. Groudon and Kyogre will both fall to a Grass Knot, while Focus Blast will annihilate Dialga and Tyranitar. Scizor and Forretress will be destroyed by a Fire Blast, and Mew will also be 2HKOed by Fire Blast boosted by Life Orb. Ice Beam will also destroy the mighty Lead Rayquaza that is devastating to so many offensive teams. However, Lead Deoxys will get 2 layers of entry hazards against Mewtwo, so having Forretress is recommended to get rid of the Stealth Rock and/or Spikes that was set up by Deoxys after it is KOed. Lead Giratina-O, Lead Darkrai, and Lead Shaymin-S are also difficult to deal with. Having a sleep absorber such as Sleep Talk Kyogre or Heracross will help deal with Darkrai, and Lead Shaymin-S and Giratina-O will not be able to do much to a defensive Jirachi or Heatran. Many of Life Orb Mewtwo's problems are dependent on the last move chosen. If Fire Blast or Flamethrower is chosen, Palkia will be a huge issue. Mewtwo will only have around a 54% chance of 2HKOing Palkia after Stealth Rock damage with Ice Beam, while Lustrous Orb Palkia will OHKO Mewtwo with rain-boosted Surfs. Kyogre will wall Mewtwo's moveset barring Self-Destruct, and smash it with STAB, rain-boosted Surfs. Latias and Latios make superb teammates in this case, being able to take Palkia's Surfs, and threatening to OHKO it with Dragon Pulse. Latias can also switch into Kyogre that lack Thunder Wave, and set up Calm Mind on it, while Latios can slam it with Thunder or Grass Knot. Palkia can also take a Choiced Kyogre's Water Spouts without being 2HKOed most of the time, and shock it with Thunder. A Heatran can lure out Kyogre, and OHKO it with Explosion, and can also take Choiced Spacial Rends from Palkia. If you choose to forgo a Fire-type attack, Life Orb Mewtwo will have problems with several Steel-types. Although Thunder will 2HKO most Scizor and Metagross, they can revenge kill Mewtwo with U-turn and Meteor Mash respectively. Bronzong is never 2HKOed by Thunder, while Bronzong will 2HKO Mewtwo with Payback after Stealth Rock damage (and Life Orb recoil in Naive Mewtwo's case). Specially defensive Jirachi will also never be 2HKOed by Thunder, and can cripple Mewtwo with paralysis from Thunder Wave or Body Slam. Finally, if using Grass Knot, specially defensive Skarmory can attempt to stall Mewtwo with Roost. Groudon makes a superb teammate in this case. Groudon can generally handle Scizor's U-turns, and can scare out Metagross and Jirachi with the threat of STAB Earthquake. Groudon also has the option of using Overheat to fry incoming Skarmory and weaken Bronzong. Kyogre can switch into Metagross's Meteor Mash, Bronzong's Payback, or Skarmory's Roost, and threaten to crush them all with Surf. Heatran can easily switch into all of the Steel-types listed, and threaten to crisp them with its STAB Fire-type attacks. In a similar manner, Dialga can threaten to roast all of the above Steel-types with Fire Blast, or hit Metagross hard with Earth Power. Hidden Power Latios can be a good Scizor lure in the sun as well. There are 3 Pokemon in particular who will almost always force Mewtwo to use Self-Destruct if faced with them. Unless Mewtwo has Stone Edge, Ho-Oh will scoff at most of Mewtwo's non-suicidal attacks, and smash it with Sacred Fire or Brave Bird. Even Thunder will fail to OHKO Ho-Oh without Stealth Rock, and the sunny weather that often comes with Ho-Oh will lower Thunder's accuracy to 50%. Blissey's massive Special Defense and HP laughs at Mewtwo's attempts to hurt her, and can even use Protect if Self-Destruct is predicted. Finally, unless Mewtwo uses Fire Blast in the sun as Wobbuffet switches in, Mewtwo will be forced to use Self-Destruct in fear that Wobbuffet will destroy Mewtwo with Mirror Coat. Ho-Oh doesn't have a true counter, thus the best way to deal with it is to either revenge kill it with a faster Pokemon who has Stone Edge, or a faster Kyogre. Due to Shadow Tag, Wobbuffet also has no true counters. If you want a surefire way of defeating Blissey, you can use Tickle Wobbuffet with a Pursuit user to ensure Blissey's demise. Alternately, you can use Dugtrio to finish off a Blissey whom Wobbuffet has Encored into a support move, such as Toxic. Mixed attackers who pose as Choice Scarf users (such as Dialga and Palkia) are a great way of luring in Blissey and weakening Wobbuffet into Mewtwo's KO range. Strong physical attackers, such as Groudon, Garchomp, and Lucario, will usually force Blissey out as well.

When you first see this set, the first thing that may come into your mind is, "What on earth?". Yes, "what on earth?" is a fairly logical and acceptable response, as turning Mewtwo into a physical wall is very unexpected. This set attempts to abuse Mewtwo's underrated physically defensive capabilities via Reflect and Will-O-Wisp, a move learned by so few in the Uber metagame. With Will-O-Wisp and Reflect, Mewtwo can quickly shut down many of its usual counters, such as Scizor, Tyranitar, and Metagross, as well as stopping pretty much all physical sweepers dead in their tracks. Taunt prevents recovery, so even Blissey will be hard pressed to bring a stop to this set. With Taunt, Mewtwo can also prevent Pokemon such as Jirachi and Forretress from suffocating it with Toxic, or setting up Spikes / Toxic Spikes. Taunt, in tandem with Recover on the same set, is something no other physical walls in Ubers besides Deoxys-D can boast; however, Mewtwo's superior Speed allows it to abuse Taunt more efficiently, thus Mewtwo is not simply an inferior Giratina or Lugia and should not be treated as such. Thunder is an option over Reflect if you feel it's absolutely necessary to have an attacking move on the set. Thunder covers up Ho-Oh and Kyogre rather nicely, as they don't suffer much from your other three moves. Ice Beam and Seismic Toss are other options that can be used in that slot. Ice Beam hits Rayquaza, Garchomp, and Groudon while Seismic Toss will deal consistent damage and helps with wearing down foes faster. If you do not feel you need an attacking move, you may also use Substitute in the second slot to help Mewtwo protect itself against status, and to also help it outstall slower opponents such as Palkia or Dialga. The EVs generate 416 HP, 256 Defense, and 352 Speed. The 352 Speed allows Mewtwo to outrun max Speed Jolly Garchomp, the fastest physical attacker you'll see in Ubers, as well as max Speed base 100s like Mew and Palkia. This Mewtwo has a lot of trouble with most special attackers in the Uber tier. Dialga, Palkia, Latias, and Latios can easily piledrive Mewtwo into the ground with their powerful Dragon-type strikes. Heatran is immune to Will-O-Wisp and will beat Mewtwo senseless with its powerful Fire Blast. Kyogre can come in on anything but Thunder and OHKO Mewtwo with Water Spout. Darkrai can outspeed this variant of Mewtwo, put it to sleep with Dark Void, and set up on it with Nasty Plot. Opposing Mewtwo can also be a pain as they will usually carry a faster Taunt and can set up using Calm Mind while shrugging off any attack that this Mewtwo can throw at it. Finally, Ho-Oh is one of the few physical attackers that Mewtwo will have serious trouble trying to beat, as it is immune to Will-O-Wisp, does not fear Mewtwo's other moves, and will usually be able to overpower Mewtwo with sun-boosted Sacred Fires. Scizor is an excellent choice to pair with this Mewtwo, as it can trap and KO Latias, Latios, and Mewtwo without a Fire-type attack with Pursuit, OHKO to Darkrai with U-turn, and can come in on Choiced Dragon-type attacks from Dialga and Palkia to easily slam them both with Superpower. Kyogre can easily survive a boosted Dark Pulse from Darkrai and most non-super effective attacks from Mewtwo and will OHKO them back with Surf. Kyogre also does not fear Ho-Oh or Heatran that much and can use said Surf to drown the fiery duo. Latias is a great answer to Kyogre, able to survive any of its attacks, destroy it with Grass Knot, and can easily Recover off any damage dealt.

Set Description This set attempts to act as a stallbreaker, a job Mewtwo can fulfill rather well thanks to its great Speed tier and large support moveset. Taunt shuts down opposing walls in tandem with Pressure, easily PP stalling them. It also lets Mewtwo beat Pokemon that don't run any attacking moves, such as Lugia. Toxic can put bulky walls and powerful attackers on a timer alike. Flamethrower lets Mewtwo hit the Steel-types that Toxic doesn't affect while also dealing decent neutral damage if rain isn't up. Thunder can be used if you're opting to run rain, hitting Steel-types for a decent amount of damage, as well as Ho-Oh, which otherwise is unfazed by the rest of your set. The EVs provided allow Mewtwo to outrun positive-natured Latios, Latias, and Lugia while maximizing Mewtwo's special bulk. This allows Mewtwo to inflict them with Toxic effectively and use Taunt on them to stop them from recovering their HP or curing their status affliction with Refresh. Team Options Mewtwo is susceptible to getting functionally removed from the game if it gets frozen, so Groudon pairs nicely by setting sun, which also boosts up Mewtwo's damage output with Flamethrower. In return, Mewtwo can deal with the special attackers that wish to take advantage of Groudon. Cleric support in case Mewtwo gets statused is very beneficial, so Blissey and Celebi can both provide that while checking various breakers that Mewtwo cannot such as Calm Mind Kyogre and Curse Snorlax, respectively. Physically defensive Spikes setters such as Deoxys-D, Skarmory, and Forretress form a good pair with Mewtwo, as Mewtwo can take on the special attacks thrown their way while forcing switches while they take on the breakers Mewtwo invites in such as Snorlax. Ho-Oh fits on teams that feature this Mewtwo set quite well, being able to take on opposing Ho-Oh, which is a major threat to Mewtwo, while Mewtwo can take on the physical walls that Ho-Oh struggles with such as Deoxys-D and Blissey if not running Hidden Power Flying. Kyogre can take on Groudon and Ho-Oh, both of which can deal with Mewtwo to some extent, and give it a perfectly accurate Thunder.

Set Description This set is designed to beat all of the common leads while also having staying power if you decide to keep it around for later use. Ice Beam and Thunder threaten Groudon and Kyogre, allowing your respective weather setter to set themselves up nicely while also paving the way for Mewtwo's teammates to sweep. Ice Beam also 2HKOes the common Latios lead, while Mewtwo isn't threatened by any move it runs, thus forcing it out early. It similarly pressures Latias leads, which are KOed by the combination of Ice Beam and Self-Destruct. Thunderbolt is an option over Thunder if you are scared of the low accuracy that Thunder has outside of rain. It also provides a consistent way to damage Ho-Oh in sun, a common switch-in, but it comes with the downside of worsening the Kyogre matchup. Self-Destruct allows Mewtwo to trade itself for one of the opponent's valuable team members, giving control of the game's momentum at any given time. This can be used to remove a foe like Blissey, which cannot survive the combination of a special attack followed up by Self-Destruct, or offensive Ho-Oh, or it can be used to severely chip a defensive wall that is problematic for the rest of your team. Due to the turn ending once Mewtwo uses Self-Destruct, the opponent cannot recover HP afterwards. Calm Mind allows Mewtwo to set up in front of the aforementioned Latios and Latias. Importantly, this allows Mewtwo to OHKO Kyogre and Groudon with Thunder and Ice Beam, respectively, and avoid the OHKO from any of their offensive moves. Mewtwo has to be wary of Hydro Pump variants of Kyogre, however, as it cannot survive a hit without a Calm Mind boost, but it also can't set up consistently in front of Kyogre because Surf variants can 2HKO regardless. Some Snorlax sets can be 3HKOed by +1 Thunder while Mewtwo avoids the 2HKO from Body Slam. Fire Blast can deal with the Steel-types that might want to try and switch in to take Self-Destruct, such as Jirachi and Metagross, as well as lead Heracross, which otherwise threatens Mewtwo into switching out or trading itself. Attack investment isn't necessary, seeing how Mewtwo's Attack stat is just large enough to get the KOs it is after with some prior chip. A Mild nature optimizes Mewtwo's lead matchup, avoiding the OHKO from physical attacks such as Groudon's Earthquake and Snorlax's Body Slam and special attacks such as from Latios and Latias. Lum Berry allows Mewtwo to act as a pseudo-status absorber, ignoring potential Thunder Waves from Kyogre and Groudon, as well as the secondary effects of Ice Beam, Thunder, and Body Slam. Mewtwo's base 130 Speed allows it to outspeed positive-natured base 110 Pokemon such as Lugia, Latios, and Latias with a neutral nature. A spread running 220 Speed EVs and 36 HP EVs lets Mewtwo take hits just a slight bit better while still outspeeding the same targets, but it comes at the cost of always losing the mirror matchup. Team Options Mewtwo can fit on pretty much every team and playstyle, but it's preferable on offense for its ability to effectively remove any threat with Self-Destruct or even act as a wallbreaker utilizing Calm Mind. Kyogre allows Mewtwo to hit perfectly accurate Thunders and appreciates Mewtwo weakening its checks in Latios, Latias, and Blissey. Similarly, Mewtwo enjoys Kyogre dealing with the Steel-types that it cannot always beat and Kyogre's ability to sponge hits from its checks such as Ho-Oh and Deoxys-A. Groudon can cover most of what Mewtwo cannot, being an effective check to Snorlax and Deoxys-A that also enjoys the Eon twins being either weakened or removed entirely. Offensive Groudon sets such as the SubSalac set can sweep the opposing team with more ease if its checks like Lugia and Ho-Oh have been damaged enough. Physical wallbreakers such as Choice Band Heracross and Metagross pair up well with Mewtwo, with Mewtwo exposing their checks' usually low Special Defense sets or trading its health with their own. Snorlax similarly enjoys Mewtwo being able to check Latios and Latias so that it can function more as a mid-game breaker rather than a wall. Deoxys-A shares a lot of checks with Mewtwo and can thus overwhelm with its strong physical moves once they've been weakened enough.

Set Description This set aims to lure in common switch-ins to the standard Mewtwo set and blow them back with a physical move. Substitute in tandem with 204 HP EVs allows Mewtwo to create Substitutes that can withstand a Seismic Toss from Blissey and Dusclops and lets Mewtwo fish for misses from inaccurate moves such as Heracross's Megahorn and Thunder outside of rain. Bulk Up allows Mewtwo to beat common physical walls such as Forretress and boost alongside Snorlax. Shadow Ball hits Latios and Latias for super effective damage and is Mewtwo's best move to spam, as it hits most of the metagame for at least neutral damage. Focus Punch pairs well with Substitute and has perfect coverage with Shadow Ball. Earthquake is an option to hit Steel-types such as Metagross and Jirachi harder than Focus Punch while also not requiring a Substitute or correct prediction to function, serving as a strong midground. 96 Speed EVs with a Jolly nature allow Mewtwo to hit 352 Speed, which is just enough to outpace maximum Speed Latios, Latias, and Lugia. Team Options Strong Normal-type attackers such as Snorlax and Slaking form a good pair with this Mewtwo set, as there is good offensive overlap. Mewtwo shares checks with them, so they all benefit from Steel-types such as Forretress being gradually chipped from their strong physical attacks. Mewtwo also significantly damages common answers to these Normal-types like Deoxys-D and Lugia. Kyogre pairs quite well, being able to switch into the physical attacks thrown Mewtwo's way while also dealing with the walls Mewtwo struggles to break such as Ho-Oh. Mewtwo can chip Latios, Latias, and Blissey in return, all of which are roadblocks for Kyogre. Groudon is a fantastic partner regardless of its set, with the defensive set being able to take on the physical attackers that Mewtwo can't switch into such as Deoxys-A and Ho-Oh, while the SubSalac set uses the Steel-types that Mewtwo invites in as setup opportunities. In return, Mewtwo removes opposing Psychic-types that often stop Groudon in its tracks such as the Eon twins, opposing Mewtwo, and Lugia. Magneton can remove the Steel-types that Mewtwo sometimes struggles to deal with such as Forretress and also spread paralysis with Thunder Wave so Mewtwo can set up Substitute more freely. Spikes from Deoxys-D, Skarmory, and Forretress is much appreciated, as Mewtwo forces multiple switches upon its set reveal. It also turns various 3HKOs into 2HKOs, such as Metagross switching into an Earthquake.

Set Description This set aims to take over the game once the foes that threaten to OHKO Mewtwo are gone. Taunt, while lasting only for two turns, allows Mewtwo to beat phazers and opposing setup sweepers alike. This combination of moves allows Mewtwo to take on Blissey and defensive Lugia regardless of their sets. Ice Beam hits the greatest array of physical attackers for at least neutral damage, with notable exceptions being Steel-types and Thick Fat Snorlax. Psychic deals more damage to Ho-Oh and Snorlax but comes at the cost of dealing significantly less damage to the many Psychic-types of the metagame such as Latios, Latias, and Lugia while still being resisted by Steel-types, most of which are physical attackers and can thus break through Mewtwo. The given EV spread with a Timid nature always makes it faster than Latios, Latias, and Lugia while giving it as much physical bulk as possible to better take on physical attackers such as Groudon and Snorlax and survive a hit from Choice Band Deoxys-A. Team Options Groudon sets sun so that Mewtwo cannot be frozen and is thus less vulnerable to RNG while also scaring away Steel-types. In return, Mewtwo can deal with problematic physical walls such as Deoxys-D, Celebi, and Lugia, which can all be cumbersome for Groudon to bypass. Spikes makes Mewtwo's job of sweeping much easier by providing some nice passive damage. As a result, Deoxys-D, Skarmory, and Forretress can all make for great partners while also dealing with the Steel-types that otherwise make Mewtwo's job rather difficult. Mewtwo struggles to break past Steel-types, so teammates that can answer to their attacks such as Kyogre and Ho-Oh pair well with it. In return, Mewtwo can take on their checks such as Blissey and the Eon twins. Choice Band Deoxys-A can revenge kill Mewtwo if Mewtwo has taken any chip, so Pokemon that can remove Deoxys-A are appreciated. Pursuit users such as Metagross, Umbreon, and your own Deoxys-A force Deoxys-A out and remove it quite effectively. As this set is usually fit for bulkier teams, cleric support from the likes of Blissey or Celebi is appreciated. They can take Kyogre and Snorlax on, respectively, both of which stop Mewtwo short from sweeping.

Set Description This set aims to utilize Mewtwo's demonstrably large Special Attack and good bulk to act as either a mid-game breaker or even a late-game setup sweeper. Thunder and Ice Beam have perfect coverage, only being mutually resisted by Magneton, which easily gets overwhelmed by this set. Thunderbolt is a safer option to deal with sun teams better, but the drop-off in power is immediately noticeable, with Ho-Oh and Forretress both avoiding the 2HKO from it. The HP EVs allow Mewtwo to create Substitutes that can withstand a Seismic Toss from Blissey and Night Shade from Deoxys-D. Substitute is utilized to avoid status moves and also scout for the foe's set, avoiding unfavorable trades such as Explosion from Metagross and Self-Destruct from Snorlax. 220 Speed EVs let Mewtwo outspeed positive-natured base 110 Pokemon such as Latios, Latias, and Lugia. Team Options Groudon is a good partner, as it provides sun support for Mewtwo so that it can't get frozen by Ice Beam. In return, Mewtwo can deal with Kyogre, Latios, and Latias, all of which are common switch-ins for Groudon. Moreover, Groudon can spread status with either Thunder Wave or Toxic and scare out common Mewtwo checks such as Steel-types and Snorlax. Physical variants of Deoxys-A can pick off weakened foes with its strong attacks or chip the opponent's Steel-types so that Mewtwo can more easily sweep in the later parts of the game. Ho-Oh is also a fantastic partner, being able to burn physical attackers with Sacred Fire, hinder them with Toxic, or deal a great deal of damage with Hidden Power Flying and Shadow Ball. Meanwhile, Mewtwo can stand up to physical walls that Ho-Oh is unable to immediately break, such as Groudon and Lugia. Mewtwo doesn't want to immediately take on the various Steel-types, so Forretress and Skarmory both chipping them gradually with Spikes support and also being a switch-in to their strong physical attacks makes them ideal partners for Mewtwo. Latios is a fantastic partner for this Mewtwo set because they both pressure Snorlax with their special attacks, making Snorlax struggle to cover both of them.

Set Description Mewtwo's extremely high Speed and 32 PP of Recover let it use Barrier to wall any physical attackers that lack phazing moves and disruptive secondary effect chances on their attacks, such as Swords Dance Mew, Earthquake Lugia, and certain Curse Snorlax and Mewtwo variants. Even a +6 Shadow Ball critical hit from Mew will only deal up to 70.3% to +6 Mewtwo, and because Mewtwo outspeeds and has Recover and Leftovers, Mew must land four consecutive critical hits to take a full health Mewtwo down. Mewtwo's effectiveness as a physical wall is compounded by the fact that many Explosion and Self-Destruct users only OHKO it some of the time—only Golem and Snorlax always OHKO—and if Mewtwo survives other foes' Explosions, it can restore its health with its fast Recover. However, Mewtwo is not a flawless physical wall—even without the less common Self-Destruct, Snorlax can pierce Mewtwo's defenses with Lovely Kiss and potentially use Body Slam, Mew can use Thunder Wave or potentially allow a teammate to sweep by removing Mewtwo with Explosion, and Curse phazers such as Tyranitar, Lugia, and Ho-Oh can remove its Defense boosts after accruing boosts. However, Swords Dance Mew is a massive threat, and Barrier Mewtwo is one of the safest ways to reliably handle it. In addition to walling foes, Mewtwo threatens its foes in return with its remaining two moveslots. The combination of Toxic and Flamethrower is an excellent way to ensure Mewtwo can pose some threat to a majority of foes, as Pokemon immune to Toxic generally take heavy damage from Flamethrower. Toxic also has the advantage of dealing sustained damage while Mewtwo does its stall routine. Ice Beam can be used over Toxic so that Mewtwo can threaten Zapdos, which is one of the most common RestTalk users in the metagame, and it also lets Mewtwo possibly freeze foes. Flamethrower can be replaced by Thunder, which has great coverage alongside Ice Beam, allows Mewtwo to hit foes such as Ho-Oh and Starmie, and threatens to paralyze foes such as Mewtwo, Mew, and Lugia. Another alternative is Psychic, which hits bulky foes such as Snorlax and Raikou for heavy damage and is an especially powerful option with Growth boosts from Baton Pass. When combined with Barrier, Growth boosts can turn Mewtwo into a near-invincible powerhouse; however, Psychic can also be used alongside BoltBeam coverage to retain heavy damage against foes such as Ho-Oh and Forretress. Mewtwo can also take a more offensive approach by running other attacking moves instead of Barrier. Self-Destruct retains some efficacy in dealing with Mew and can break through opposing status absorbers, such as Rest Snorlax. It is also somewhat unexpected alongside Recover, which could allow Mewtwo to grab a surprise KO against an unsuspecting foe. Dynamic Punch is a good option for dealing with Dark-types such as Umbreon and Tyranitar while also providing a chance to break through Snorlax and Blissey without relying on Self-Destruct. However, it should be noted that Dynamic Punch sets with Recover over Self-Destruct may lack the firepower to deal with opposing Mewtwo and Mew. Team Options Recover Mewtwo is exceptionally susceptible to status, so status absorbers and clerics are critical to its success. Rest Snorlax is a great general tank and can take a beating from most Pokemon that could paralyze Mewtwo with Thunder or target it with other moves that may inflict status. Blissey can likewise take virtually any special attack and offers Heal Bell support, which can allow Mewtwo to accept a degree of risk, such as fighting a Pokemon that uses Thunder, Body Slam, or Thunder Wave. Rest Jolteon can take potentially-paralyzing hits from Electric-types and threaten a sweep with Growth boosts. Baton Pass Jolteon can likewise threaten a sweep by passing boosts to Mewtwo or its teammates, which is especially effective if Mewtwo has multiple attacking moves. Spikes and Rapid Spin support is also recommended in order to go toe to toe with defensive teams; Forretress and Cloyster both make for excellent Spikes users and can also use Rapid Spin if the team requires it, whereas Golem can provide additional defense against Snorlax and pivot into Electric-type attacks aimed at Mewtwo alongside its Rapid Spin support. Measures against Curse + Whirlwind Lugia and Ho-Oh such as Zapdos and Raikou are a necessity. Both of these Electric-types provide a lot of offensive presence and defensive utility; offensively, they offer high damage output and a paralysis threat with STAB Thunder, as well as the potential to run Roar or Whirlwind with Spikes support to rack up passive damage against bulky foes. Defensively, both are effective as RestTalk users and perform very well against Lugia, one of the most important threats to deal with. An alternative to the Electric-types is Crunch Tyranitar, which offers both heavy damage against Lugia and other Psychic-types as well as a useful resistance to Normal-type moves such as Explosion and Snorlax's STAB attacks.

Set Description As an all-out attacker, Mewtwo focuses on maximizing coverage while holding the threat of a sudden Self-Destruct over the foe's head. Thunder is essential to threaten Cloyster with an OHKO, as well as threatening Lugia, Ho-Oh, Mew, and Mewtwo with heavy damage and paralysis. Ice Beam is the best choice for its second move, as it threatens a 2HKO on Zapdos and Golem while also providing the possibility of a game-changing freeze. Psychic is a solid alternative to Ice Beam, as it hits all of Snorlax, Zapdos, and Raikou for solid damage while threatening to drop Special Defense. This solid neutral damage on key foes also allows Mewtwo to run Fire Blast for the OHKO on Forretress, 2HKO on Celebi, and more reliable damage against Mew and opposing Mewtwo. Self-Destruct is a key weapon in Mewtwo's arsenal, allowing it to instantly remove nearly any foe after one prior hit. This can be used to deal with Swords Dance Mew, opposing Mewtwo, and Snorlax, potentially putting a teammate such as Zapdos or Jolteon into a position to sweep. Team Options Mewtwo is very commonly paired with Mew, as the two are excellent at breaking apart defensive cores with Self-Destruct and Explosion. If Mewtwo succeeds in taking down a specially bulky foe such as Snorlax, Blissey, or Raikou, this may allow a threat such as Growth Jolteon or Zapdos to wreak havoc with STAB Thunder. Jolteon can also potentially send its Special Attack boosts to Mewtwo with Baton Pass, making it nigh unstoppable. Mewtwo also appreciates Spikes support from Pokemon such as Forretress and Cloyster, as this helps it break through bulky foes such as Snorlax and Umbreon more easily. To potentially avoid having to trade such a valuable offensive weapon for its doppelganger on the opposing team, one can aim to status the opposing Mewtwo and then take it down with teammates such as Crunch + Pursuit Tyranitar, Explosion Steelix, Curse Lugia, Swords Dance Mew, and Curse Snorlax. In case Curse Snorlax gets out of hand against Mewtwo, it is useful to have at least one Normal-resistant phazer such as Steelix, Tyranitar, or Golem, or a Normal-resistant Defense booster such as Curse Skarmory, Reflect or Curse Forretress, or Defense Curl Shuckle.

Set Description Mewtwo can focus on stalling, which can be approached in two ways: Flash or Barrier. While they play differently in practice, the aim is very similar, that being stonewalling opposing Mewtwo. Because of the long-term role of these sets, the "SafeTwo" Special stat is highly recommended; the given spread gives Mewtwo a Special stat of 341, which ensures that it hits 1023 Special at +4, meaning that a Special drop does not trigger an overflow. Mewtwo's attacking option on this type of set largely depends on the rest of the team, and it only has one, so care should be taken. Thunderbolt hits Mew and Slowbro while giving Mewtwo the best PP advantage; however, Rhydon becomes extremely threatening, especially if running Flash. Alternatively, Ice Beam lets Mewtwo muscle past Exeggutor and Rhydon, as well as providing the option of freezing the opposing Mewtwo, possibly cutting off the Flash interaction early. STAB Psychic can serve as a generic option on Barrier sets, being the strongest attack Mewtwo has and also giving it the best shot of beating Snorlax before it paralyzes with Body Slam or uses Self-Destruct. Attacking the opposing Mewtwo is generally unnecessary; stalling its attacking PP is all you need, leaving yourself with a fully boosted Mewtwo to wreak havoc thereafter. This set isn't wholly opposed to being paralyzed—skipping turns is arguably beneficial once the accuracy drops have piled on, though paralysis does drastically decrease its consistency prior to that. The combination of Barrier and Amnesia can be used instead to turn Mewtwo into a sweeper that also has a large PP advantage against opposing Mewtwo, which can be 112 PP with Recover added on, not factoring in offensive options. This alone is enough to PP stall any standard Mewtwo set, allowing you to end up with a fully boosted Mewtwo by the time they run out. It is strongly recommended to get this Mewtwo paralyzed as soon as possible, as this further improves its PP stalling capabilities and ensures it cannot get frozen later. With the assistance of Barrier, exploding on Mewtwo becomes an impossibility without something like Swords Dance + Explosion Mew, which forces the opposing team to PP stall it themselves. Even the mighty Snorlax, with the strongest physical move in STAB Self-Destruct, rarely hits for even a quarter of +6 Barrier Mewtwo's health. This set works especially well against Self-Destruct Mewtwo sets, as they cannot afford a PP war and lose the ability to KO it from half HP due to the Defense boost. While still vulnerable to critical hits, Mewtwo is very difficult to KO after boosting both Defense and Special, often surviving for astonishing periods of time. The main drawback to stall-centric Mewtwo sets is that they often require some momentum to function; Flash usually takes multiple hits to begin making your own Mewtwo difficult to hit, and Barrier sets add more turns of setup time. Ergo, any unfortunate luck during these sequences is often devastating, and making your own Mewtwo less consistent must be for good reason. Additionally, because of the aforementioned lack of coverage and specialized nature, stall-centric Mewtwo sets often end up being weaker to Pokemon other than opposing Mewtwo. Depending on the offensive option of choice, Mewtwo can become weak to any of Chansey, Exeggutor, Slowbro, and Transform Mew. Slowbro is the most notable if not running Thunderbolt, being able to accumulate a sizable PP advantage through Rest while having high enough damage output to muscle past with repeated full paralysis. If running Thunderbolt, though, Light Screen Chansey becomes a big threat if not paralyzed, possessing a PP advantage and enough bulk to shrug off what Mewtwo throws at it. Regardless of offensive option and Mewtwo's sheer power, though, Barrier Mewtwo often has limited attacking PP to punish switch stalling, which is worsened when paralyzed. Ergo, teams using this set should make up for its shortcomings. Explosion Mew, Golem, and Self-Destruct Snorlax make fine choices, often making it easier to break through Chansey and Slowbro. Zapdos or Jolteon can also be effective—especially the latter, which tends to have a more consistent Chansey matchup and has a high critical hit rate to break through Slowbro. Slowbro is also an excellent partner, profiting greatly from a Thunderbolt Mewtwo being incapacitated to set up and sweep later.

Set Description Mewtwo's defining set makes full use of the incredible Amnesia. With its astronomical Special, Amnesia leaves it almost impossible to switch into until it's scouted and just as hard to KO with special moves. A Mewtwo boosted up to the maximum of 999 Special can only fall to three or more critical hit special attacks. This tremendous bulk and Recover allow Mewtwo to stay healthy while hammering away. However, after these two mandatory moves, Mewtwo's coverage is impressive and has multiple viable options, making it a multifaceted threat able to plow through just about everything. The coverage options you choose will largely decide what your Mewtwo's primary role is. Mewtwo's STAB Psychic is one of the scariest no-drawback moves in the game. A 33.2% chance to drop Special as an added bonus can allow Mewtwo to muscle through something like Light Screen Chansey. The Special drops can also be used to reapply the Speed drop from paralysis, allowing paralyzed Mewtwo to outspeed an opposing paralyzed Mewtwo or incapacitate it for something else to handle; because of this, a paralyzed Mewtwo isn't out of the game just yet. Finally, Psychic has a significant benefit in causing an opposing +4 Mewtwo's Special to overflow if it doesn't have a "SafeTwo" stat spread, which consists of 13 DVs and 8 EVs in Special to ensure it starts at 341. Unfortunately, with the bevy of Psychic-types in Ubers, Mewtwo's targets are often resistant and thus take Psychic decently before striking back. Common examples include Exeggutor, Slowbro, Mew, and opposing Mewtwo. Slotting in Thunderbolt gives Mewtwo some unique coverage possibilities while bringing its PP up to 104. Mewtwo is now able to easily beat Slowbro; if both boost to the 999 cap, Mewtwo still 3HKOes with Thunderbolt, and that's to say nothing of its 25.39% chance to OHKO with a critical hit. Thunderbolt also gives Mewtwo access to paralysis. While the odds are slim, this can help Mewtwo and teammates immensely against opposing Mewtwo and Chansey. You're statistically likely to get at least one instance of paralysis from Thunderbolt's full PP, so it's fair to fish for it. On the downside, using it in the third moveslot means Mewtwo lets Exeggutor in for free, as it's only 3HKOed by a 999 Special Psychic from full HP; it can then use this opportunity to spread status or use Explosion. You also lose out on the potential to freeze by forgoing Ice Beam, which can really hurt against Chansey, Mew, and opposing Mewtwo. Also, paralyzed Mewtwo can inadvertently allow Rhydon a free switch should it use Thunderbolt or Recover, which puts it in a very difficult spot, as Rhydon can fish for Substitute on full paralysis and 3HKO with Earthquake from there. Ice Beam slots in nicely alongside Psychic, and the biggest reason is the 10.1% freeze chance. While the coverage is nice to help deal with Exeggutor, Ice Beam's primary draw is to freeze opposing Mewtwo or, less ideally, one of its major checks, like Chansey. This can open up the entire game and oftentimes win it outright. However, Slowbro is able to soak up this set's hits and use Amnesia, Thunder Wave, and Rest to have a good chance to beat Mewtwo head-on. Additionally, while Starmie doesn't pose much of a threat offensively, it can also paralyze Mewtwo or attempt to freeze it; it can take at least one hit from a Mewtwo with this coverage boosted up to 999. Opponents must be careful though, as +4 Psychic will 2HKO Starmie. Another drawback to this set is the mere 96 total PP, which can often become crucial when battling against other Mewtwo and trying to break down Chansey. This makes freezing the wrong Pokemon possibly quite deadly, as opposing Mewtwo tend to win from there through PP stall. When using Psychic + Ice Beam, it's best to avoid paralyzing the opposing Mewtwo in favor of winning by PP stall or freezing it. Even without a STAB option, Mewtwo still threatens the entire metagame with BoltBeam coverage. Instead of using its STAB Psychic, it can combine the coverage and benefits of Ice Beam and Thunderbolt while reaching 104 PP. While lacking Psychic means it no longer KOes the powerful and Self-Destruct-using Snorlax after some chip damage, the coverage allows Mewtwo to deal with almost everything else. It gains the advantage against both Slowbro and Exeggutor while bearing a 10.1% freeze chance for opposing Mewtwo, Mew, or Chansey. Since it handles almost the entire metagame besides these three Pokemon and Snorlax, it can blow the game wide open by freezing one of them. One drawback to this set is that, if your opponent has both Chansey and Mewtwo active, it will only be able to take out one while being walled by the other because of relying on a freeze. However, you can use Thunderbolt to attempt paralysis, meaning Mewtwo isn't completely shut down and can still help its team against these threats. Boosted up to 999, Mewtwo is able to OHKO Slowbro, Exeggutor, Tauros, and Starmie to name a few, making this combination a Swiss Army knife that is very difficult to deal with. A unique option that Mewtwo can run is Submission. First, Submission holds a whopping 48 PP, bringing the total to 128 if using Ice Beam or 136 if using Thunderbolt. This lets Mewtwo win PP wars against opposing Mewtwo consistently while having the advantage against Chansey. One must be careful of it getting frozen though. Submission destroys Light Screen Chansey, one of Mewtwo's most common adversaries, without risking PP stall. Submission Mewtwo has an 86.7% chance to 2HKO, and with its high critical hit ratio, it has a decent chance to OHKO. The primary drawback of this set is only running one special coverage option. Running Thunderbolt is the most common, as this allows Mewtwo to beat all of its most common checks, these being Chansey via Submission, Slowbro via Thunderbolt, and opposing Mewtwo via PP stall. However, this set struggles against Exeggutor and Rhydon, often allowing Explosion or status from the former and giving a free switch in to the latter. Ice Beam can be chosen over Thunderbolt to alleviate this, making the set weak to Slowbro but gaining the advantage against Exeggutor and Rhydon. Having a freeze chance is never bad either. Psychic, on the other hand, should not be chosen here; alongside Submission, it simply leaves Mewtwo vulnerable against too many common Psychic-types.

Set Description By bluffing the standard set with Amnesia and your chosen coverage option, this Mewtwo can lure in the opposing Mewtwo, occasionally paralyze it with Thunder Wave, and then use Self-Destruct after some chip damage. Self-Destruct also comes with the bonus of beating set-up Slowbro, which is otherwise a common check to the set. Self-Destruct will KO opposing Mewtwo from 52.2% minimum, which means two uses of +2 Thunderbolt will set it up. It's recommended to run Thunderbolt, as well as paralysis support, to make it harder for the opposing Mewtwo to heal its way out of Self-Destruct range with Recover. Other options tend to only make this set worse, as matching up worse against Slowbro usually forces Mewtwo to use Self-Destruct. The normally ubiquitous Recover can be dropped for Thunder Wave, which guarantees that Mewtwo can use Self-Destruct before the opposing one can heal out of KO range. Naturally, this also means Mewtwo itself should avoid getting paralyzed whenever possible, or it becomes very difficult to succeed. This set carries inherent risks, as Self-Destruct is naturally inconsistent: it being absorbed by Gengar or Rhydon can be a game loss, and less common Mewtwo sets using Flash or even Barrier match up extremely well against it. However, it remains viable for the sheer reward the trade can provide. If supported by Seismic Toss Chansey, the set can be more consistent at securing trades, as two uses of Seismic Toss can also put opposing Mewtwo in KO range.
