Shellder is a niche Shell Smash user in LC. Skill Link is what makes Shellder a powerful force, turning Icicle Spear and Rock Blast into threatening moves. After using Shell Smash, Ice Shard allows Shellder to preempt Grookey, which would otherwise KO it with its own priority in Grassy Glide. Liquidation prevents Steel-types such as Pawniard and Magnemite from checking Shellder. Protect defends Shellder against Mienfoo's Fake Out and Trapinch's First Impression. An Adamant nature maximizes the chance of KOing Grookey with Ice Shard, and an Impish nature makes setting up easier for non-Ice Shard sets. Diglett is an amazing partner for Shellder, as it traps and removes troublesome Steel-types like Magnemite; Diglett can also run Memento, giving Shellder a great chance to come in safely and start setting up. Knock Off users such as Mienfoo and Grookey can remove Eviolite from defensive Pokemon for Shellder.

Moves Shell Smash makes Shellder super threatening, doubling both its Speed and its Attack. Icicle Spear and Rock Blast benefit from Skill Link, changing them from subpar attacks into Shellder's best offensive moves. Multi-hit attacks have some weird mechanics in LC, causing them to hit especially hard and be stronger than any of Shellder's STAB attacks. Moreover, Ice and Rock coverage is overall excellent, missing only Steel-types. Between just these two attacks, Shellder is truly an offensive threat and among the best sweepers in the tier. Liquidation is used to OHKO Mudbray and most Steel-types easily. Ice Shard can be run instead, primarily to KO Doduo and Diglett before they can use their strong priority options to revenge kill a weakened Shellder; however, Liquidation is generally better, as it makes Shellder far harder to wall. Set Details Skill Link is what makes Shellder so deadly, guaranteeing its multi-hit moves always hit five times, thus dealing the most possible damage. In LC, multi-hit moves are even more powerful than their Base Power would indicate thanks to the intricacies of the damage formula, giving Shellder amazing power. Shellder opts for an Impish nature over an Adamant one in favor of increasing its Defense to improve its survivability and setup capabilities, which are further bolstered by an Eviolite. The Attack investment without a boosting nature is more than adequate anyway, as +2 Icicle Spear and Rock Blast have the same damage rolls as they would with an Adamant nature. The Speed investment allows +2 Impish Shellder to outspeed 17 Speed Choice Scarf Pokemon such as Choice Scarf Mienfoo. A Jolly nature is also viable to allow Shellder to outspeed Scarf Doduo and Gastly after Shell Smash. The remaining EVs are invested into HP to give Shellder slightly better bulk. Usage Tips As with any sweeper, Shellder's checks need to be weakened before it can sweep. Some troubling Pokemon need to be scouted for, such as Chinchou and Tirtouga, as Berry Juice variants check Shellder while other variants do not. Otherwise, using Shellder is rather straightforward: set up on a physical attacker, avoid setting up on a status user, and proceed to sweep. Team Options Memento users, especially Cottonee and Diglett, pair well with Shellder, often giving it amazing setup chances and helping to keep it healthy enough to avoid being revenge killed. Diglett is also able to trap and weaken troubling Pokemon such as Chinchou and potentially Pawniard, while Cottonee is able to provide more utility through Knock Off support and act as a defensive pivot. Knock Off users are pretty good Pokemon to pair with Shellder too, as they remove Eviolites from the bulkiest Pokemon in the tier, allowing Shellder to blast through them. Vullaby is a great Knock Off user and is excellent at breaking down a number of checks it has in common with Shellder. Mienfoo and Timburr also pair well with Shellder, as they use Knock Off to remove Eviolites from some troubling Pokemon. More importantly, both are able to lure and exploit Croagunk and Snubbull, potentially removing one to make Shellder's sweep easier. Magnet Pull Magnemite is a decent partner that allows Shellder to drop Liquidation and run Ice Shard to prevent being revenge killed. Abra with Knock Off and Shadow Ball is a good wallbreaker for Shellder, as the set lures and beats Slowpoke and Honedge, two of the better, though uncommon, counters to Shellder. Lastly, Stealth Rock support is a necessity, making most reliable Stealth Rock users a good pairing. Hippopotas, Onix, and Pawniard are particularly good teammates due to helping fend off Electric-types and being the most reliable Stealth Rock users available.

Shellder's huge Defense and nice defensive typing allow it to run an efficient Rapid Spin set. Rapid Spin allows other Pokemon on the team to switch in without potentially losing health. This set might seem outclassed by Staryu, but it's worth noting that Shellder has higher physical bulk, as well as the ability to smash through Substitutes with Rock Blast. Shellder also has priority in Ice Shard, which somewhat compensates for its low Speed. Oran Berry provides additional bulk and Skill Link will allow Rock Blast to beat many Pokemon thinking of setting up on it. The given EVs maximize bulk, and Special Defenseis boosted more in this case because it is quite a bit lower than Shellder's Defense. For teammates, Pursuit users are great to stop spinblockers that will often try to stop Shellder from clearing the field. Munchlax is the best option because of its huge special bulk, but Stunky is also good for its better offensive capabilities. Pokemon that can take advantage of the lack of entry hazards are good to have on the team. Houndour loves "free" switch ins, which can be near guaranteed if Shellder packs Explosion.

Shellder's decent attacking stats and ability to hit 14 Speed make it a viable Choice Scarf candidate. Surf is Shellder's strongest STAB, and Ice Beam pairs well with it since it hits most Grass-types for super effective damage. However, Hidden Power Electric should be considered as it hits most Water-types for good damage. Rock Blast, with Skill Link, smashes through Substitutes and destroys Mantyke easily. Explosion allows Shellder to net itself a quick kill on Munchlax, but Return is more consistent and it eases prediction on potential Ghost-types switching in. Speed EVs are maximized with a Naive nature in order for Shellder to reach 21 Speed with a Choice Scarf. Good teammates for this Shellder are Pokemon that like having Substitute users, such as Houndour and Gastly, removed. Bronzor is a good teammate as it commonly loses to the aforementioned Pokemon, and it can set up Stealth Rock. Rapid Spinners are also good so Shellder can switch in without losing health. Pineco resists Grass and has access to Rapid Spin, as well as all three entry hazards; Baltoy is immune to Electric and has Rapid Spin and Stealth Rock. If locked into Surf or Ice Beam, Agility or Rain Dance Mantyke can come in and begin to set up, so Munchlax is a good teammate to counter it.

Shellder has decent attacking stats and its relatively low Speed allows it to function well in Trick Room. Again, Surf is its most powerful attack and should be used in most situations. Rock Blast is useful for breaking Substitutes and hits Ice-types for super effective damage. Ice Beam hits Grass- and Flying-types harder, but Ice Shard can be used for priority. Finally, Explosion allows Shellder to go out with a bang. Skill Link is important for Rock Blast to hit the maximum number of times. The EVs maximize Shellder's attacking stats and the rest go into Defense. For teammates, Trick Room supporters are necessary in order for this set to work to the best of its ability. Duskull is the best teammate for Shellder since, unlike Slowpoke, it does not share Shellder's Electric and Grass weaknesses. Other Trick Room sweepers are also important for punching holes in the opponent's team, so Machop, Cubone, and Magnemite are all great partners.
