Wo-Chien leverages its massive bulk, ability, and utility movepool to serve as an effective wall and disruptor by removing items from and chipping away at the opposing team. Foul Play gives Wo-Chien a means of punishing physical setup sweepers like Maushold and Bisharp, which attempt to exploit its relative passivity. Ruination pressures Wo-Chien's defensive answers like Chesnaught and is generally a useful progress maker against Pokemon lacking reliable recovery like Hisuian Goodra and Suicune. Leech Seed serves as Wo-Chien's secondary source of recovery and pairs nicely with Ruination, allowing Wo-Chien to wear down foes over the course of the match regardless of their Defense. Protect gives Wo-Chien an additional turn to recover health and scout moves from Choice item users like Basculegion-F, Gardevoir, and Gengar. Leftovers is essential for maximizing Wo-Chien's longevity and make up for its lack of recovery moves. While its defensive EVs are fairly customizable depending on the needs of the team, the Special Defense investment makes Wo-Chien a particularly strong answer to Calm Mind users like Slowbro, Suicune, and Necrozma. Tera Poison patches up Wo-Chien's Fighting-, Fairy- and Bug-type weaknesses while denying poison from Pokemon like Amoonguss and Umbreon, which would otherwise threaten Wo-Chien's longevity. Tera Ghost similarly removes Wo-Chien's weaknesses to Bug- and Fighting-type moves but instead allows it to spinblock against Cyclizar and more effectively answer Maushold, Yanmega, and Ribombee. Wo-Chien fits nicely on balance teams that enjoy its ability to sponge hits while making progress with Knock Off and Leech Seed. Hazard-stacking teams particularly enjoy Wo-Chien's ability to remove items like Heavy-Duty Boots and Leftovers from opposing Pokemon, thus maximizing damage output from entry hazards over time. Therefore, entry hazard setters like Gligar, and Gastrodon pair nicely with Wo-Chien. In addition, entry hazards cause Regenerator Pokemon like Slowbro and Cyclizar to take more damage than what they recover with every switch, preventing them from stalling out Wo-Chien. Because of its weakness to Fighting-, Bug-, and Fairy-type moves, Wo-Chien appreciates teammates that complement its defensive profile like Registeel, Talonflame and Slowbro. Physically defensive teammates like Rocky Helmet Hippowdon and Bellibolt are also useful partners, as they can switch in on and punish U-turns and Knock Offs directed at Wo-Chien. Status moves are especially troublesome for Wo-Chien, as they threaten its ability to sit in on other Pokemon and recover health throughout the battle, so Pokemon that are immune to or don't mind status conditions like Magnezone can be helpful as teammates. Pokemon that can spread burn like Will-O-Wisp Talonflame, Scald Slowbro, and Sacred Fire Entei are beneficial for Wo-Chien too, allowing it to more comfortably endure physical attacks and retaliate with Foul Play. Wo-Chien benefits greatly from entry hazard removal, as it will likely be switched in and out throughout the course of the battle. Therefore, Pokemon that can remove entry hazards like Cyclizar, Noivern, and Talonflame make for nice partners. Cyclizar is a particularly good partner on hazard-stacking teams, since Rapid Spin does not clear entry hazards on the opponent's side, thus improving Wo-Chien's ability to chip down the opposing team through Knock Off and Leech Seed. Wo-Chien often lures in Poison- and Fighting-types that can be exploited by Future Sight users like Slowbro and Reuniclus. Because of its relative passivity, Wo-Chien can easily get overwhelmed by opposing wallbreakers and setup sweepers, especially if it's unable to Terastallize. As such, potent revenge killers and priority users like Choice Scarf Gengar and Gardevoir and Extreme Speed Entei are appreciated as well.

Wo-Chien is a multifaceted support Pokemon that uses its ability and support toolkit to neutralize opposing threats. Leech Seed and Ruination allow it to chip down foes. Pollen Puff lets Wo-Chien do the reverse and heal up its allies. Snarl weakens special attackers unaffected by Tablets of Ruin, breaks Focus Sashes, and deals serious chip damage to Calyrex-S. Foul Play punishes physical attackers that boost their Attack stats to get around Tablets of Ruin while threatening both Calyrex formes. Wo-Chien generally runs Leftovers but can also run Sitrus Berry to avoid getting 2HKOed by Moonblast from Booster Energy Flutter Mane. The Speed EVs allow Wo-Chien to outspeed bulky Kyogre; this allows it to boost Kyogre's Water Spout damage by using Pollen Puff on it before it can move. With 44 Defense EVs, Wo-Chien almost always survives Adamant Close Combat from Urshifu, and the rest of its EVs are invested in Special Defense. Tera Poison gives Wo-Chien resistances to Fighting-, Fairy-, and Bug-type moves that would normally threaten it and a strong defensive typing. Tera Water gives Wo-Chien resistances to Fire- and Ice-type moves and a similarly useful typing. Wo-Chien struggles into special attackers that can hit it super-effectively such as Tornadus, Flutter Mane, and Amoonguss. It is also chipped heavily by U-turn from Pokemon such as Rillaboom and Urshifu-R. Wo-Chien is almost always paired with Kyogre, which appreciates Tablets of Ruin boosting its Defense and getting its Water Spouts powered up by fast Pollen Puffs. Wo-Chien is also often partnered with Incineroar and Grimmsnarl; Grimmsnarl can boost Wo-Chien's defenses further through its screens and weaken special attackers with Spirit Break, while Incineroar helps Wo-Chien stay on the field longer with Fake Out, Intimidate, and Parting Shot and matches up favorably into several Pokemon Wo-Chien struggles with, such as Amoonguss and Chien-Pao.

Knock Off gives Wo-Chien more of a niche due to relevant Pokemon that learn it being rare, and it is useful against foes like Ting-Lu and Landorus-T. However, Arceus formes, which can absorb Knock Off without losing their items, are quite omnipresent. Protect lets Wo-Chien safely rack up Leftovers and Leech Seed recovery. Alternatively, Taunt shuts down setup and entry hazard Pokemon such as Arceus formes and Ting-Lu on the switch. Tera Poison gives Wo-Chien key resistances to attacks like Koraidon's Low Kick, Zacian-C's Play Rough, Double Dance Miraidon's Dazzling Gleam, and the omnipresent U-turn from foes like Landorus-T, Koraidon, and Miraidon while also offering an immunity to Toxic and letting Wo-Chien absorb Toxic Spikes. However, Tera Poison also makes Wo-Chien weak to Ground-type moves from Arceus-Ground and Psychic-type moves from Calyrex-S, respectively. Wo-Chien fits best on balance and bulky offense teams that appreciate its ability to check Calyrex-S and Arceus-Ground while offering good recovery via Leech Seed to teammates. Wo-Chien benefits from teammates such as Skeledirge, Toxapex, and Landorus-T, which check Koraidon and Zacian-C for it. Special attackers in Arceus-Fairy, Substitute Kyogre, and Eternatus trouble Wo-Chien, so offensive checks to them such as Zacian-C, Choice Scarf Koraidon, Arceus, and Calyrex-S are appreciated. Water Absorb Closdire as a defensive teammate checks Arceus-Fairy, Kyogre, and Eternatus while setting up hazards.

With excellent bulk and a unique array of moves to support it, Wo-Chien stands out as a dangerous user of Leech Seed and a prime Pokemon to stall matches out with. Foul Play versus Knock Off: Foul Play is Wo-Chien's most consistent offensive move that also happens to punish setup sweepers, while Knock Off's support is especially helpful against Trick users such as Gholdengo and Rotom-W. Note that both are viable together if you're willing to give up a support move. Substitute: When paired together with Toxic Spikes, Protect and Substitute makes even foes that should beat Wo-Chien get worn down before they can KO it, such as Chi-Yu. Substitute itself protects Wo-Chien from slow users of Yawn such as Dondozo and Hippowdon, and slow OHKO moves from Ting-Lu, Dondozo, and Kingambit. Ruination: Ruination gives Wo-Chien powerful chipping down potential, though it should never be used as Wo-Chien's only attack due to it being extremely difficult to KO with. When paired with Knock Off, it's especially useful against Wo-Chien mirror matches. Giga Drain: With Stealth Rock support, Giga Drain OHKOes Iron Bundle and almost always 2HKOes Chien-Pao. If you allocate 60 EVs to Special Attack, Giga Drain will OHKO Iron Bundle regardless of Stealth Rock. Taunt: Taunt does an excellent job of surprising other Taunt Pokemon switching in, such as Annihilape and Corviknight. Toxic Spikes Partners: Wo-Chien becomes far more deadly with Toxic Spikes support, letting it quickly wear down a wide variety of foes even faster. Toxapex is one of the best options thanks to its good defensive synergy with Wo-Chien, but other options include Iron Moth, Glimmora, Clodsire, Focus Sash Meowscarada, and the niche Gengar. Other Options Snarl: Snarl makes fearsome special attackers such as Flutter Mane and Chi-Yu far easier to switch into when Wo-Chien needs to escape, though Wo-Chien will need to have the correct Tera Type to outstall these foes itself. Ingrain: In addition to providing some extra recovery, Ingrain makes phazers such as Ting-Lu and Hippowdon fail to stop Wo-Chien consistently, though Wo-Chien being trapped is a serious drawback. Tera Types Tera Dependency - High: Despite Wo-Chien's fantastic bulk, its vulnerability to Toxic Spikes and poor defensive typing mean it must often Terastallize to stall out teams. Poison: Tera Poison provides a vital resistance to Fairy and Fighting, and it also lets Wo-Chien absorb Toxic Spikes. Fairy: Besides being a great defensive type, Tera Fairy helps Wo-Chien against Fighting-types that'd normally beat it. Water: Tera Water provides Ice and Fire resistances, helpful against Baxcalibur, Chien-Pao, and Chi-Yu. Fire: Tera Fire gives useful resistances to Fairy, Fire, and Ice, which help against major threats like Flutter Mane, Baxcalibur, Chi-Yu, and Chien-Pao. Items Leftovers: Wo-Chien's stalling playstyle makes Leftovers the most consistent recovery item. Big Root: If another Pokemon desperately needs Leftovers, Big Root is a viable alternative for getting extra recovery from Leech Seed and Giga Drain. EV Spreads and Adjustments 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Spe with Impish or Bold: Maximizing Wo-Chien's physical bulk lets it pull off some incredible stunts, such as avoiding a 3HKO from Breloom's Mach Punch with Leftovers and, after Terastallization, avoiding a 2HKO from Choice Band Chien-Pao's Icicle Crash. 252 HP / 252 SpD / 4 Spe with Careful or Calm: With the correct Tera Type and maximum Special Defense, Wo-Chien can take on Flutter Mane and Iron Bundle much more effectively. Using 60 SpA EVs: If you're willing to give up a bit of bulk, this investment is required to OHKO Iron Bundle with Giga Drain with either a Bold or a Calm nature. Using 100 Speed EVs: With some sacrifice to bulk, this Speed investment lets Wo-Chien outspeed Adamant maximum Speed Kingambit, and it can be vital in Wo-Chien mirror matches after Terastallization makes it vulnerable to Leech Seed, due to Substitute blocking Leech Seed.
