Moves Stealth Rock hampers enemy teams by breaking Sturdy and discouraging constant switches. Thunder Wave should be used if the opponent tries to set up while Nosepass is setting up Stealth Rock. Use Volt Switch for a slow switch out, which can help get Nosepass out so that it can assist later in the game, and can help get other Pokemon in safely. Rock Blast is a multi-hit STAB move that hits Flying-types pretty hard. This is extremely useful for switching into Fletchling and then punishing it if the opponent decides to keep it in, for breaking Sturdy on other entry hazard setters, and breaking Focus Sash on Pokemon such as Surskit. Dazzling Gleam can be used to damage Fighting-type switch-ins, specifically Scraggy, who takes 4x super effective damage from the move. Against most other Fighting-types, Thunder Wave and Volt Switch is a better combination, as it allows Nosepass to cripple them and get a slow switch out. Set Details Nosepass's preferred nature and EV spread depend on its chosen moves. Defense and Special Defense should be maximized in order to increase survivability. The remaining EVs should be put into Attack if using Rock Blast or into Special Attack if using Power Gem. A Bold nature boosts Defense at the expense of Attack, so it should be run if Nosepass is using Power Gem. Alternately, a Relaxed nature increases Defense at the expense of Speed, which increases the likelihood of moving last with Volt Switch. This works best with an EV spread of 76 Atk / 236 Def / 196 SpD. Sturdy and Berry Juice work in conjunction to ensure Nosepass has at least a turn to set up. With this combination, Nosepass can usually make several moves before going down or switching out. Usage Tips Get in, use Stealth Rock and maybe Thunder Wave, and serve as a suicide switch. Nosepass can tank physical hits pretty well because of its massive Defense stat and is an effective check to many common threats. Sometimes, it's more important to make a offensive move than set up Stealth Rock. Pay attention to the enemy's team and be careful with the decision that you make. While Thunder Wave can really obstruct Fighting-types like Mienfoo, it can be unwise to use if the enemy has a Timburr or Scraggy, due to Guts and Shed Skin, respectively. Use Volt Switch for a slow switch out, giving you the switch advantage on the following turn. However, Volt Switch deals almost no damage, so don't depend on it too much. Its sole purpose is to get Nosepass out and another Pokemon in safely. If there is an opposing Fletchling, keep Nosepass around to deal with it, as it can counter any set except the rare Hidden Power Grass variant. Team Options Cottonee, as a switch-in for Timburr, is extremely useful. Switch into a Drain Punch, use Encore on the Drain Punch, then fight back with STAB Fairy-type moves. Pokemon that sweep better after assistance from entry hazards, such as Taillow and Fletchling, are also good teammates for Nosepass. Ghost-type Pokemon can stop Rapid Spin users from removing Stealth Rock. Pawniard and other Pokemon with the Defiant ability discourage the enemy team from using Defog. Pokemon that appreciate a slow Volt Switch in, such as Fletchling, work well with Nosepass. Pokemon that can switch into Water-type attacks, such as Foongus or Dry Skin Croagunk, also are good partners. Foongus has great synergy with Nosepass, as they handle each other's threats.

This set takes advantage of Nosepass's power and bulk. Stone Edge is the recommended STAB move due to its high power; however, Rock Slide can be used instead if you prefer the accuracy. Because Nosepass is a Rock-type Pokemon, it will naturally lure Steel-type Pokemon, as they hit super effectively with their STAB and resist Rock-type moves. This latter fact especially invites Ferroseed to come in, and Bullet Seed will almost always 2HKO Nosepass. Thanks to a combination of Magnet Pull and Fire Punch, Nosepass will always beat Ferroseed by trapping it and 2HKOing it, easily surviving any attacks Ferroseed uses. The third and fourth moveslots are reserved for support moves; Thunder Wave is ideal for crippling Mienfoo and Riolu switch-ins, while Stealth Rock is useful in causing damage to the opponent's switches (though Nosepass isn't one to cause many switches). Lastly, Pain Split is a must on Nosepass if you are using sandstorm and Toxic Spikes, as it creates a whole new version of stall; if you are using Nosepass as a supporter, however, you may use Thunder Wave in the third slot and Stealth Rock in the last slot. Using Magic Coat to reflect status effects is an option, but simply having a cleric to keep your team healthy will be more effective. Earthquake is somewhat viable in one of the last two slots if you plan to use Nosepass offensively, but Onix utilizes the combination of Rock- and Ground-type moves more effectively due to its typing, receiving STAB Earthquake and Stone Edge. Toxic is another option to hit walls such as Lileep and Slowpoke on the switch, but switching to a proper counter usually works better than stalling them out. Despite sharing several weaknesses, Hippopotas is the best teammate for Nosepass since it sets up a permanent sandstorm. Lileep is also notable, as it can come in on Water-, Grass-, and Ground-type moves and wall or defeat the user, but they are both weak to Fighting-type moves. Natu has near-perfect synergy with Nosepass and can reflect status-inflicting moves such as Toxic and Thunder Wave back at the opponent. Natu can also beat Fighting-type Pokemon who try to hit Nosepass with powerful STAB moves. Toxic Spikes support is greatly appreciated if Nosepass is using Pain Split to enhance its stall capabilities; Omanyte is a good candidate as it can also set up multiple entry hazards and take advantage of the sandstorm. Skorupi takes Fighting-type moves with ease and can act as a status absorber with its popular RestTalk set.

This set makes use of Nosepass's bulk in the sand, where it reaches 22 HP, 25 Defense, and 24 Special Defense, allowing it to tank both physical and special attacks with ease. Nosepass is great at setting up Stealth Rock because of its natural bulk. Thunder Wave allows Nosepass to cripple Pokemon who are faster than it, and gives Nosepass's teammates an easier time against them. Explosion allows Nosepass to knock out a Pokemon along with it, after Nosepass has accomplished what it needs to do. Stone Edge prevents Nosepass from being completely shut down by Taunt without needing to Explode, and is a good way to take out weakened Pokemon. Protect can be used to scout and stall for sandstorm damage, while Taunt is a good option to prevent Pokemon from setting up on Nosepass. Oran Berry allows Nosepass to have a longer lifespan. Its EV spread maximizes its HP and Defense, while boosting its Special Defense by one point. Hippopotas is a must on any team that utilizes Nosepass, as its Sand Stream ability will boost Nosepass's Special Defense to 24. Having Stealth Rock on Nosepass frees up a moveslot on Hippopotas, allowing it to either use Roar or a coverage move instead. Slow Pokemon who hit hard appreciate the paralysis that Nosepass can spread throughout the opposing team. Thanks to Nosepass's bulk, it can easily come in throughout the battle to paralyze opponents and just be a general nuisance. Since Nosepass will be putting up entry hazards on the opponent's field, a spinblocker is necessary to prevent your set-up from going to waste. Duskull makes a good spinblocker, having high defenses which makes it easy to switch in, and also access to Will-O-Wisp to prevent any Pursuit users from taking it out, and generally crippling physical threats that may hurt the team.

Taunt stops defensive Seismic Toss variants of Mawile from using Baton Pass to escape Nosepass. Because Mawile's Defense is higher than its Special Defense, Fire Punch is the best option for Nosepass to hit Mawile with and 2HKO it. Block prevents non-Steel-type Pokemon from double switching in and out of Taunt. Block can also be Baton Passed by Mawile so that something else becomes trapped. Alternatively, Hidden Power Rock is Nosepass's most reliable STAB move and hits Pokemon such as Pidgeot and Murkrow super effectively. Explosion, although powered down by Nosepass's Timid nature, is still strong enough to OHKO Roselia and severely dents Chimecho. Magnet Pull is Nosepass's only defining feature, differentiating itself from other Rock-types with its ability to trap opposing Steel-types. Maximum Speed EVs alongside a Timid nature allow Nosepass to outspeed uninvested base 60s while also outspeeding most standard 128 Speed Mawile and defensive Pokemon such as Roselia and Chimecho that it can use Explosion on. Maximum Special Attack EVs ensure that Nosepass 2HKOes Mawile with Fire Punch. Leftovers and the remaining 4 Defense EVs allow Nosepass to more adequately take two Hidden Power Steels from Mawile. Poison-types such as Arbok appreciate Mawile being removed, as they can spam STAB Sludge Bomb more freely, making them good teammates for Nosepass. Nosepass and Poison-types share a weakness to Ground, so Pokemon that have the Flying typing such as Pidgeot can provide the necessary Ground-type immunity while also resisting Grass for Nosepass. Chimecho is another great example, utilizing Levitate to provide a switch-in for Ground-types and adding a Psychic-type resistance for Arbok. Be sure to not reveal Nosepass too early; if Nosepass is revealed too early, Mawile will keep double switching out every time it is brought in, and Nosepass will lose all momentum in the process. While its defense stats might suggest otherwise, Nosepass is exceedingly frail and must be played carefully. Mawile can very easily 2HKO Nosepass with two Hidden Power Steels. Once trapped, Nosepass needs to predict correctly whether Mawile is going to attack, Taunt, or Baton Pass. Hopefully, by the time you bring Nosepass into Mawile, you will know what set it is running so that you can more easily predict around it.
