Flamethrower can be used instead to give Ninetales a more reliable means of finishing off weakened foes such as Machamp. Solar Beam pairs nicely with Ninetales's STAB moves, since allows Ninetales to threaten bulky Rock- and Water-types like Rhyperior, Milotic, Mega Blastoise, and Slowking. Hidden Power Ice rounds out Ninetales's coverage, letting it threaten Dragon-types that are resistant to Fire such as Noivern, Tyrantrum, Dragalge, and Choice Scarf Flygon. Psyshock can be used instead to deal more consistent damage to Dragalge and Hariyama, though these are the only targets that it hits, limiting its usefulness. Set Details Maximum investment in Special Attack in tandem with Choice Specs allows Ninetales to hit as hard possible, while maximum investment in Speed and a Timid nature allow it to outrun Pokemon like Drapion, Roserade, and Yanmega. Drought summons sun for five turns, which is useful for increasing the power of Ninetales's STAB moves and reducing the turns needed to use Solar Beam from two to one. Usage Tips Choice Specs Ninetales should mainly be used to wallbreak early- and mid-game, since this can pave the way for a teammate to have an easier time finishing the opposing team off late-game. Switching Ninetales in on stronger, neutral attacks from Pokemon like Gardevoir is ill advised, especially if Stealth Rock is on its side of the field, due to it lacking the bulk to handle stronger attacks and this cutting into its longevity; however, Ninetales can switch in on weaker or resisted attacks from Pokemon such as Mandibuzz and Vanilluxe. The ideal methods of getting Ninetales in are on predicted double switches to Pokemon like Bronzong and Roserade, through the use of U-turn or Volt Switch, or after a teammate has been KOed in order to revenge kill the foe. Since Ninetales is Choice locked, prediction plays a major role in it succeeding at wallbreaking; for example, if it predicts a Water- or Rock-type to switch in, it should use Solar Beam. Once these Pokemon have been removed, Ninetales is free to spam its STAB moves. Ninetales can also take advantage of the switches it forces by doubling into a teammate that can take advantage of the Pokemon that switched in, like Virizion against Pokemon like Gigalith. Exercise caution when using Overheat if the opponent has a Pokemon like Barbaracle that can take advantage of Ninetales being locked into it. Team Options Ninetales appreciates being paired with entry hazard removers such as Mega Blastoise, Mandibuzz, Forretress and Rotom-C due to its vulnerability to all forms of entry hazards, most notably Stealth Rock. The latter three are also capable of bringing Ninetales in safely with U-turn or Volt Switch. Conversely, Ninetales also appreciates entry hazard support from Pokemon such as Metagross, Rhyperior, and Roserade to guarantee certain OHKOs and 2HKOs such as on Mega Blastoise with Solar Beam and on Cresselia with Overheat, respectively. Since Ninetales struggles with breaking through certain specially bulky Pokemon like Snorlax and Gigalith, it appreciates being paired with powerful physical wallbreakers that can pressure them like Tyrantrum, Escavalier, and Bewear, with Ninetales being able to remove physically bulky Pokemon like Forretress as well as bulkier entry hazard setters like Metagross and Rhyperior with the appropriate coverage move. Grass-types such as Virizion, Shaymin, and Roserade synergize well with Ninetales due to their ability to deal with Water- and Rock-types like Mega Blastoise, Milotic, and Diancie, with the former also being capable of taking on Pokemon like Snorlax for Ninetales. Shaymin and Roserade especially appreciate the removal of Steel-types and can provide useful Healing Wish and Spikes support, respectively. Ninetales appreciates having pivots, such as Flygon and Raikou, as teammates due to their ability to get Ninetales into play safely against Pokemon that they tend to bait in like Bronzong and Registeel. Late-game cleaners like Zygarde-10% and Choice Scarf Gardevoir appreciate Ninetales breaking through bulky Pokemon like Mandibuzz, Tangela, and Bronzong and have a much easier time finishing teams off as a result, with the latter being able to cripple Ninetales's switch-ins with Trick and also provide useful Healing Wish support should Ninetales get worn down too quickly.

Moves Nasty Plot boosts Ninetales's Special Attack enough to OHKO the vast majority of Pokemon. Fire Blast is Ninetales's main and most powerful attack. It alone is able to threaten a KO against anything that doesn't resist Fire. Solar Beam greatly complements this by giving Ninetales almost all the needed coverage to hit Rock- and Water-type Pokemon such as Rhyperior, Milotic, and Slowking. Lastly, Hidden Power Ice gives coverage against Noivern and Tyrantrum. Set Details 252 Special Attack and Speed EVs maximize Ninetales's damage output and speed. With a Timid nature, Ninetales can Speed tie with maximum Speed Shaymin and Mega Glalie. Firium Z gives Ninetales the ability to break past defensive walls and open the way for a teammate to sweep. Notable KOs with Inferno Overdrive include Nidoqueen, Gardevoir, and Necrozma after Stealth Rock damage and, if Ninetales is at +2, Cresselia, Umbreon, and Mega Ampharos. Usage Tips Do not directly switch Ninetales into any neutral attacks, as that will hinder its ability to set up at a later point. Only attempt to set up against Pokemon that can't hurt Ninetales like Fairy-types such as Florges and weaker Grass-types such as Rotom-C. Ninetales can also use passive walls like Registeel and Umbreon as setup fodder, but watch out for status like Toxic or Thunder Wave. Before all this you need to make sure answers like Thick Fat Snorlax are removed before attempting to sweep. Having your own Stealth Rock or Spikes on the field greatly improves Ninetales's ability to wallbreak. Finally, utilizing slow U-turn or Volt Switch users gives you more opportunities to safely come in and set up. Team Options Ninetales works best on offensive and balance-oriented teams that can provide additional offensive presence or momentum gain. Pokemon such as Noivern can use U-turn and Choice lock walls with Switcheroo. Choice Scarf Flygon can be a worthy partner for its ability to beat Gigalith and Goodra, and Flygon also has access to U-turn to pivot out of its bulkier counters, which Ninetales can then use as setup fodder. Shaymin can also synergize greatly, as it's able to check Gigalith and Diancie whereas Ninetales can use most of Shaymin's walls in Registeel, Umbreon and Cresselia as setup fodder. Furthermore, a Choice Scarf set can provide much-appreciated Healing Wish support. Victreebel can also be considered for its ability to check Diancie and take advantage of Sun using its Chlorophyll ability. It should be noted, however, that Victreebel won't be able to reliably take advantage of this weather condition, so making those turns count is important. Complementary wallbreakers include Bewear and Gardevoir, which pressure any wall that could stop Ninetales. Additionally, Choice Scarf Gardevoir is capable of providing Healing Wish support. Rhyperior and Gigalith both provide Stealth Rock and also deal with faster attackers like Swellow and Aerodactyl. Lastly, having entry hazard removal makes it harder to whittle down Ninetales. Ideal users such as Mega Blastoise, Donphan, and Tsareena can fulfill this need and beat Gigalith and Diancie, two common Stealth Rock users.

Moves Nasty Plot boosts Ninetales's Special Attack to incredible levels, turning it into an extremely threatening late-game sweeper. Fire Blast is Ninetales's most powerful STAB move, netting OHKOs and 2HKOs Flamethrower misses out on. Psyshock allows Ninetales to get past the most common Fire-type check in the tier, Hariyama, as well as other specially bulky walls such as Magmortar and Mantine. Energy Ball grants Ninetales coverage on Rock types such as Rhydon, as well as bulky Water-types such as Prinplup, Gastrodon, Samurott, Lanturn, Kabutops, and Barbaracle. However, It is important to keep hazards off the field when using Ninetales, as they hinder its ability to pivot and can wear it down quickly in conjunction with Life Orb recoil. Ninetales should try to set up on passive pokemon such as Mega Audino, Gourgeist-XL, Vileplume, and Weezing, which cannot do much back to it. However, if the opponent has a pokemon capable of revenge killing Ninetales, it is better to just fire off an attack rather than boost. Team Options Entry hazard removal is crucial when using Ninetales, so Pokemon such as Pelipper, Mantine, Hitmonchan, Prinplup, and Sandslash make for great teammates. Bulky Water-types such as Poliwrath, Lanturn, and Samurott are spectacular partners, being able to check Ground-, Rock- and other Water-types, which harass Ninetales. In return, Ninetales uses the Grass-types that plague them as setup fodder. Poliwrath in particular makes for a good partner, resisting Rock-type moves and sporting an immunity to Water. Grass-types such as Lilligant, Abomasnow, and Shiftry appreciate the utility Ninetales provides with Flash-Fire, and they check Water-, Ground- and Rock-types in return. For the same reason, physically offensive teammates such as Kangaskhan, Tauros, and Primeape appreciate having a partner than can absorb Will-O-Wisps. Entry hazards such as Stealth Rock and Spikes are very beneficial to Ninetales, as it lacks the raw power needed to muscle past neutral targets. Specifically, entry hazards are useful to break Steelix's Sturdy as well as securing the OHKO on uninvested Rotom after Stealth Rock. Partnering Ninetales with strong Fire-types such as Pyroar and Magmortar creates a powerful wallbreaking core, as Ninetales breaks down common Fire-type switch-ins such as Hariyama, Rhydon, and Lanturn.

Moves Will-O-Wisp lets Ninetales cripple switch-ins like Politoed, Rotom-W, and Tyranitar and wear them down, helping it win the weather war. Sunny Day lets Ninetales punish Tyranitar, Hippowdon, and Politoed for switching in to change the weather, and makes Ninetales able to beat burnt Politoed lacking Toxic. Pain Split gives Ninetales a modicum of longevity, letting it heal against healthy switch-ins like Tyranitar, Gliscor, and Tentacruel lacking Toxic if sun is up. Protect allows Ninetales to get free recovery if sand isn't up, scout the intentions of Choice item Pokemon like Latios and Garchomp, and rack up burn damage without consequence. Roar can be used instead to phase out setup sweepers like Reuniclus and to rack up entry hazard damage. Set Details The EV spread lets Ninetales survive an Outrage from Choice Scarf Garchomp after Stealth Rock and outrun Modest Hydreigon. Team Options Ninetales is weak to Stealth Rock, vulnerable to all other entry hazards, and meant to fit on sun stall teams, so entry hazard control is essential. Xatu blocks entry hazards from going up with Magic Bounce, provides a pivot to Ground-type moves, can wear down Tyranitar with Reflect + Rocky Helmet, and pivot Ninetales in safely to reset the weather with U-turn. Mold Breaker Excadrill and Forretress can spin entry hazards off the field, with Mold Breaker Excadrill able to pivot into and threaten Latios and Tyranitar and set Stealth Rock while Forretress can take on Dragon-types like Dragonite lacking Fire Punch. Chansey can keep special threats like Alakazam, Latios, and Volcarona in check, set up Stealth Rock, and benefits greatly from not taking passive damage from sand every turn. Cresselia is able to have much better longevity thanks to Moonlight recovering much more health, letting it wall common threats to sun teams like Terrakion and Garchomp and being able to heal with Leftovers. Cresselia also enjoys Tyranitar getting burnt and worn down so sand can stay off the field and have one of its main counters removed. Volcarona is able to run a bulky Quiver Dance set thanks to its Flamethrower becoming much stronger with the boost fron sun, being able to passively recover with Leftovers, having good anti-hazard support, and Ninetales burning and wearing down checks like Tyranitar, Rotom-W, and Jellicent. Substitute + Dragon Dance Dragonite provides a resistance to Water and immunity to Ground and is able to more easily set up without sand negating its Leftovers. Latias has similar defensive synergy to Dragonite, appreciates Ninetales burning Tyranitar, and keeping sand off the field so it can more easily set up with Calm Mind and sweep. Rotom-W provides a Water resistance and Ground immunity, can work with Ninetales to spread burns on to Pokemon like Gastrodon and opposing Rotom-W, and get Ninetales on to the field safely with Volt Switch.

This is Ninetales's flagship set, which allows it to act as an effective lure for bulky Water-types such as Milotic and Slowbro while also functioning as a sweeper. With a minor investment in its HP, Ninetales is able to take on and defeat the usual Fire-type counters after a Nasty Plot boost. Fire Blast is Ninetales's best STAB move in terms of sweeping, especially since Ninetales doesn't have maximum Special Attack investment. Energy Ball is Ninetales's most important coverage move, and is the key reason why Ninetales is able to take on Water-types. Hidden Power Rock is for Altaria and opposing Fire-types, like Arcanine and Moltres. Fire-, Grass-, and Rock-type coverage also gets perfect coverage in UU. The EV spread allows Ninetales to survive a 0 SpA Milotic's Surf 100% of the time, even after Stealth Rock damage thanks to Leftovers, and hit back with a +2 Energy Ball for a 2HKO. It also allows Ninetales to outspeed base 95 Speed Pokemon with a boosting nature. In addition to Nasty Plot, Ninetales can also nab another power boost by switching into Fire-type attacks, thanks to its Flash Fire ability. This will make its Fire Blast very difficult to wall, especially after Nasty Plot. Ninetales greatly appreciates Stealth Rock support, as it weakens most of its other counters to the point where Ninetales can easily KO them. Ninetales especially likes partners that can weaken Water-types to make sweeping easier and lure Fire-types so it can grab a Flash Fire boost. Grass-types such as Venusaur, Tangrowth, and Leafeon are perfect for this. Toxicroak works as well, since its Dry Skin ability allows it to heal itself by switching into Water-type attacks. It also smites Ninetales' biggest counters: Clefable and Chansey. However, Toxicroak may also lure in Ground-types, so be careful when using it.

With a single Nasty Plot boost, Ninetales reaches 522 Special Attack, which is just good enough for sweeping mid- to late-game. Switch Ninetales in on a Fire-type attack for a free switch in and begin boosting with Nasty Plot. For which attack to use, Fire Blast is Ninetales's main STAB attack, though Flamethrower is a perfectly fine substitute for more reliability. Energy Ball hits Water-, Ground, and Rock-type Pokemon super effectively. Hypnosis is a valuable (if somewhat unreliable) asset, as it can be used freely as your opponent switches out to a counter, and may grant Ninetales a free turn to boost with Nasty Plot. Hidden Power Rock covers Moltres, Altaria, and other Flash Fire Pokemon, though its coverage is less potent than Hypnosis's crippling effect. Another option over Hypnosis is Substitute; Ninetales can boost its Special Attack from behind a Substitute without fearing status or damage. Since Ninetales' physical defense is rather low, it is best to use attacks with high accuracy. However, Flamethrower may miss out on OHKOing standard Registeel, since it only deals 87.9% - 103.8%. Life Orb is used to squeeze out all of Ninetales's sweeping potential, as it appreciates every bit of power it can get. If Hidden Power Rock is used, an EV spread of 36 HP / 252 SpA / 220 Spe is an option as Hidden Power Rock lowers Ninetales' Speed IV; running maximum Speed still won't allow Ninetales to tie with other base 100s. With 220 Speed EVs, Ninetales will always outpace positive natured base 95s. Maximum Special Attack must always be used with this set, since Ninetales is aiming to sweep through the opposing team. The remaining EVs are simply shunted into HP to increase overall bulk and make setup slightly easier. Ninetales works well as part of a Fire-Water-Grass team core. One helpful teammate includes Venusaur, which can switch into and immediately threaten bulky Water-types such as Milotic and Slowbro. These same bulky Water-types function well as teammates, since they can easily sponge attacks aimed at Ninetales and threaten Altaria, which resists both Energy Ball and Fire Blast. Milotic becomes an even better choice should you forgo Hidden Power Rock, since it can check the likes of Altaria, Blaziken, Houndoom, and Moltres effectively. Blastoise is also a great Water-type teammate that is capable of adding not only defensive synergy to your team, but also Rapid Spin support - something Ninetales should have in order to sweep uninhibited. Taking down Clefable and Chansey is nigh impossible for Ninetales, which is why Hariyama is a good teammate. Its STAB Fighting-type attacks and Guts allow it to deftly handle these threats. Moreover, it can deal with Houndoom, which may try to nab a Flash Fire boost on the switch in.

One can avoid the shaky accuracy of Hypnosis and the hassle of setting up Nasty Plot boosts by having Ninetales hold Choice Specs. Overheat is more useful early-game, where Ninetales will be switching more often, while Fire Blast becomes a better choice late-game, where Ninetales will want to be sweeping unimpeded. Energy Ball does the same job here as it does on the other sets, cleaning up bulky Water- and Rock- types. Extrasensory, while not commonly seen, does give Ninetales a way to take down Fighting-types such as Hariyama and Blaziken. Hidden Power Rock helps out with other Fire-types as well as Flying-types. The given EV spread allows Ninetales to outspeed base 95 Speed Pokemon, since the 30 Speed IV caused by Hidden Power Rock means outspeeding anything faster is impossible. The leftover EVs are placed in HP, but could also be put back into Speed if opposing Ninetales are of concern. If you decide to use an attack other than Hidden Power Rock, a simple 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe spread could be adopted to reach the next Speed tier. Being locked into a single move often results in a lot of switching, something no Fire-type enjoys doing with Stealth Rock around. Therefore, it is recommended that you add a Rapid Spinner to your team. Cloyster is able to fill this role and can also set up its own entry hazards to help make sweeping easier. Bulky Hitmontop is a fair choice too, since it can hit enemy Rock-types super effectively or employ a Foresight + Rapid Spin combination that can only be stopped by a double-Ghost team.

Ninetales's support movepool also allows it to pull off a double status set quite effectively. Start off with Hypnosis to sleep a foe then cripple the next switch-in, hopefully a physical attacker, with Will-O-Wisp. Energy Ball and your choice of STAB fill out the rest of the moveset, providing Ninetales with the best coverage it can get should it find an opportunity to pick off a foe. Pain Split can be used over Energy Ball if you feel that being able to heal off damage (albeit, somewhat unreliably) would be helpful. Wide Lens is almost mandatory when using this set, due to Hypnosis's and Will-O-Wisp's low accuracy. Since this Ninetales isn't looking to stay in and sweep, Overheat is a perfectly viable attack choice. Fire Blast is better if you want Ninetales to function as both a supporter and a sweeper, since it doesn't lower Ninetales's Special Attack, but with no Special Attack investment, this is still unlikely to have much of an impact. The EV spread allows Ninetales to outrun max Speed base 95s such as Drapion while getting as much bulk as possible out of the remainder. This set's ideal teammates are those that form the Fire-Water-Grass combination, which creates strong team synergy. Specifically, Torterra is able to function well with Double Status Ninetales as it can set up Stealth Rock, which is very useful when using a set that causes as many switches as this one does. It is also suggested that your Water-type has the potential to overcome Morning Sun Arcanine, since it resists or is immune to three of the moves in the moveset. Using a Utility Blastoise with Roar is highly recommended, since it can shuffle your opponent's team and Rapid Spin away entry hazards that ruin Ninetales. Just be sure you don't use Yawn in the third moveslot; it will fail if Ninetales has already put something to sleep.

With some prediction, Ninetales can badly screw its opponents over. Ninetales's base 100 Special Defense is excellent, so you can expect your opponent to bring in a physical attacker, which Ninetales can burn with Will-O-Wisp. When Ninetales's end is near, Grudge is its big contribution to the team. If Ninetales uses Grudge on the turn it is KOed, the move that KOed it will be stripped of all its PP. With some smart strategizing, this can help pave the way for another Pokemon to sweep: for example, an Earthquake-less Donphan can no longer stop Dragon Dance Tyranitar. The slowest Ninetales should go is a stat of 300 Speed, which requires a Timid nature and 148 Speed EVs; maximum Speed is a good option as well. Spread the rest over HP and Special Attack.

Set Description Roar gives Ninetales unique offensive and defensive utility. On the offensive side, it lets Ninetales rack up Spikes damage on its checks, especially Octillery. Ninetales is an especially good user of Roar given its great matchup against the most common Spikes-immune pokemon in the tier: Xatu. On the defensive side, Roar lets Ninetales act as an emergency stop to dangerous setup sweepers, like Growth Pass Flareon and Curse Wigglytuff. Roar Ninetales is notably the best way of stopping Growth Pass Flareon, as it is the only decent Pokemon that can fit Roar on its set, and it isn't threatened by a +1 Fire Blast at all. Roar's main downside is not being able to be used with Sleep Talk, as Roar will fail if called by Sleep Talk. This makes this set more vulnerable to giving free turns to dangerous Pokemon like Dugtrio, makes Ninetales more vulnerable by status, and makes it a worse check to Xatu and Weezing. Rest keeps Ninetales healthy, while Toxic lets Ninetales shut down Curse Porygon and Rock-types like Graveler, which do not use Rest. Toxic pairs especially well with Roar because if a poisoned Pokemon switches in as Ninetales uses Roar, it will take poison damage and not get Leftovers recovery as it gets phazed. Sunny Day is an option over Toxic Roar in the face of Octillery and be much more threatening to Pokemon like Wigglytuff, but Toxic's interactions with Roar make it the generally preferred option. Team Options Pineco is a mandatory teammate on this set, as it makes Ninetales's Roar a threatening offensive weapon. Passive Pokemon that are vulnerable to being set up on such as Dewgong and Gloom appreciate Ninetales's ability to stop setup sweepers. Late-game cleaners such as Xatu, Fearow, and Curse Stantler also appreciate its ability to wear down the opposing team with Roar in combination with Spikes. Octillery and Dugtrio checks are extremely important as well: Chinchou and Gloom help against the former, Dewgong helps against the latter, and pure Grass-types like Exeggcute helps against both. Octillery itself help against both while being more able to break holes in teams thanks to Ninetales racking up Spikes damage with Roar. Octillery also appreciates Ninetales taking advantage of the Grass-types that wall its Hidden Power Electric set. Dugtrio also keeps up the offensive pressure that this set demands.

Set Description Flamethrower is its main STAB move and is used over Fire Blast for the extra PP and perfect accuracy. Since Ninetales is primarly a defensive Pokemon, it values reliability more than power. Rest consistently keeps it healthy to check Xatu and Weezing, while Sleep Talk prevents it from letting in dangerous threats in for free while sleeping. The last move gives Ninetales more utility. Sunny Day severely weakens Octillery and Chinchou, allowing the likes of Pineco to set up Spikes on them or enabling Pokemon like Stantler and Wigglytuff to duel with it safely. Sunny Day also allows Ninetales to win the one-on-one against Dewgong instead of losing to it, neuters Thunder accuracy from the likes of Weezing, Primeape, and Chinchou; turns a 3HKO from Flamethrower against various Pokemon like Xatu, Fearow, and Stantler into a 2HKO; and lets it 3HKO Wigglytuff, which would otherwise set up Curse on it. Toxic can be used to force a Rest from Pokemon like Octillery, Dewgong, Flareon, and Rapidash, while completely ruining Porygon, Curse Light Screen Stantler, Dugtrio, Kingler, and Rock-types. Reflect lets Ninetales punish Pokemon like Dugtrio and Rock-types for switching in while also letting its team switch in more safely against many Pokemon, such as Fearow, Kingler, Stantler, and Wigglytuff. Team Options Pokemon that take advantage of Octillery are imperative to Ninetales's success. Grass-types like Gloom, Exeggcute, and Bayleef handle Hidden Power Electric variants of Octillery and Dugtrio, while appreciating Ninetales's ability to check Xatu and Weezing. The Grass-types especially enjoy Reflect from Ninetales, as it temporarily neuters threats they let in for free, such as Fearow, Stantler, and Wigglytuff. Octillery itself, when equipped with Hidden Power Electric, takes care of Ice Beam variants of Octillery, Rapidash, and Flareon, while appreciating Ninetales's ability to take care of Grass-types. Chinchou is the best punisher of Octillery, which also appreciates Reflect Ninetales keeping it safe against Dugtrio. Pokemon that check Dugtrio like Dewgong are required for Ninetales as well. Dewgong also appreciates Ninetales using Toxic on Curse + Light Screen Stantler, a Pokemon that takes advantage of Dewgong very well. Pokemon that struggle with Weezing such as Primeape, Hitmonlee, and the aforementioned Grass-types appreciate Ninetales's defensive services. If using Sunny Day, Pokemon like Stantler and Wigglytuff are great partners. Both can take advantage of Octillery in sun but struggle to do so outside of sun. Wigglytuff also answers Chinchou, which is another major threat to Ninetales. Rock-types can be used to deal with the Fire-types that Ninetales lets in for free. Graveler spins away spikes, making it easier for Ninetales to stay healthy. Sudowoodo and Pupitar appreciate sun, as it lets both survive a Surf from Octillery. Sudowoodo and Pupitar are also decent checks to RestTalk Flareon and Rapidash, which wall Ninetales.
