Alternatively, the more reliable, yet weaker Scald can be used, which has a 30 percent chance to burn the foe. Ice Beam lets Gorebyss deal with Grass-types such as Vileplume, Gourgeist, and Roselia, which otherwise wall it. Signal Beam is used to KO common switch-ins such as Ludicolo, Lilligant, and Jynx as well as Malamar. Hidden Power Grass lets Gorebyss deal with Water-types such as Lanturn, Gastrodon, and Prinplup. Set Details Maximum Special Attack and Speed investment enhances Gorebyss's power and Speed in order to allow it to sweep the opposing team. Life Orb is used to increase Gorebyss's damage output at the cost of HP with each attack. A Modest nature is used to maximize Gorebyss's Special Attack. However, a Timid nature can also be used to further increase its Speed, which makes Gorebyss outspeed Jolly Cacturne, Exeggutor, and Aurorus before a Shell Smash boost, and Jolly Choice Scarf Pinsir and Timid Choice Scarf Mesprit after a Shell Smash boost. Usage Tips Due to Gorebyss's low Speed, it cannot set up a Shell Smash on most Taunt users, such as Archeops and Mismagius. However, once Gorebyss gets to +2, it outspeeds the entire unboosted metagame and certain Choice Scarf users, though it still fails to outspeed Choice Scarf Rotom, Lilligant, and Rotom-S. Gorebyss should use slow defensive Pokemon such as Rhydon, Carracosta, Gourgeist, and Weezing, as well as Choice-locked Fire-types such as Pyroar, as setup bait by forcing them to switch out. Gorebyss's decent physical bulk and good defensive typing allow it to set up on various offensive Pokemon, although it should not set up on specially offensive Pokemon, as it lacks special bulk. Gorebyss should be used as a late-game cleaner; when the opponent's team is weakened, Gorebyss can set up easily. Team Options Gorebyss appreciates Pokemon that can take Grass- and Electric-type attacks aimed at it, such as Magmortar and Rhydon, respectively. Memento support from Skuntank or Jumpluff makes it easier for Gorebyss to set up a Shell Smash. Mesprit, Liepard, and other Rain Dance users can aid Gorebyss by triggering Swift Swim. Liepard can use Encore and then U-turn to Gorebyss, giving it an easier time to set up and sweep.

Shell Smash allows Gorebyss to become a fearsome sweeper and to clean up easily once opposing revenge killers are defeated. Surf provides a powerful yet reliable option for sweeping through the opponent's team. Signal Beam hits Grass-types such as Ludicolo and Exeggutor, which otherwise wall Gorebyss. For the last moveslot, Substitute is generally preferred, as it allows Gorebyss to set up in front of walls such as Torkoal, Alomomola, and Metang by shielding it from status. Substitute is also very helpful when the opponent's revenge killer is still alive in order to protect Gorebyss from opposing priority and Choice Scarf users. Ice Beam is an alternative, and while it does not provide insurance against revenge killers, it does allow Gorebyss to take down Roselia, Altaria, and Vileplume if its teammates are unable to do so. However if you go this route, be sure to defeat opposing Choice Scarf users first before attempting a sweep. A Timid nature allows Gorebyss to outspeed everything up to base 85 Speed Choice Scarf users at +2 Speed, including Choice Scarf Sawk and Gardevoir. It also allows Gorebyss to outspeed utility Misdreavus when unboosted, which lets it use Shell Smash or Substitute before being Taunted or burned by Will-O-Wisp, respectively. A Modest nature can be used for more cleaning power, but outspeeding Misdreavus is usually preferred. Hydro Pump can be used for added wallbreaking power, as it can OHKO defensive threats such as Audino, but the loss in accuracy is not worth it, as an untimely miss would end a potential sweep due to Gorebyss's frailty at -1 defenses. The item choice corresponds with the move chosen in the fourth slot. Life Orb should be used with Substitute, as together they guarantee power and safety, and the added residual damage should not matter too much because Gorebyss should ideally only need to use Substitute once. You could also opt to use Leftovers for more opportunities to set up a Substitute, but Life Orb helps Gorebyss nab some important KOs. For example, it needs the additional power to OHKO SubBU Braviary at +2 after Stealth Rock damage. Lum Berry should be used with Ice Beam, as it guarantees protection against status alongside Ice Beam's superior coverage. It also allows Gorebyss to switch into Toxic Spikes fearlessly once. Swellow and Braviary are decent partners, as they are both capable of taking down troublesome special walls with relative ease. They can also lure in Rock-types and U-turn into Gorebyss, allowing it to set up by threatening an OHKO. Entry hazard support is also crucial for Gorebyss to attain important KOs. For example, Life Orb Gorebyss needs Stealth Rock and a layer of Spikes to OHKO specially defensive Ludicolo with Signal Beam, and Gorebyss without a boosting item needs Stealth Rock to guarantee a 2HKO against Lickilicky. Scolipede and Golem are good examples of offensive teammates that can set up entry hazards. Teammates that hit hard physically are also appreciated. For example, Primeape and Pinsir are able to break down the special walls that stop Gorebyss and lure in physical walls such as Alomomola for Gorebyss to set up on. Encore or Memento support is appreciated, as it grants Gorebyss additional setup opportunities. Liepard and Muk can provide this support effectively. Dual screens support is very helpful for Gorebyss, as the added survivability allows it to set up more effectively and survive a few hits from weak priority moves and revenge killers. Teammates that can provide dual screens support include Serperior, Gardevoir, and Ampharos. Gardevoir in particular can also provide Memento support and even Safeguard support for variants without Lum Berry while also setting up dual screens. Gorebyss's sweep can be cut short by Toxic Spikes, as the residual damage from Substitute, Life Orb, and poison greatly reduces Gorebyss's longevity. Grounded Poison-type teammates, such as the previously mentioned Scolipede and Muk, can remove these Toxic Spikes. Skuntank is also a useful teammate, as it can absorb Toxic Spikes, defeat Jynx, and Pursuit Roselia for major damage, which all give Gorebyss an easier time sweeping later on.

This set lets the pink menace take a more supportive role as a Baton Passer. Although Gorebyss has a plethora of moves it could pass, Agility is the most effective, allowing a teammate to reach blistering levels of Speed for a lightning-fast sweep. Substitute safeguards Gorebyss and the Baton Pass recipient from harmful status effects, in addition to providing cover from incoming attacks. Finally, Surf ensures that Gorebyss isn't rendered a complete deadweight by Taunt, since even with only a meager investment in Special Attack it still hits decently hard. Gorebyss's EV spread allows it to outpace positive nature base 80 Speed Choice Scarf Pokemon after an Agility. This ensures that it can create a Substitute or Baton Pass against Choice Scarf Venusaur without worrying about being tranquilized by Sleep Powder. In addition to Agility, Gorebyss could also potentially pass Iron Defense, Amnesia, or Aqua Ring to a suitable recipient. The latter is worth noting because Gorebyss is the only Pokemon in UU capable of Baton Passing Aqua Ring. Pinch Berries, such as Liechi or Petaya, could be used in conjunction with Substitute to send offensive boosts along with Agility. Baton Pass Gorebyss requires two types of Pokemon: lures so it can switch in and set up, and recipients to pass its boosts to. Grass-types such as Venusaur and Tangrowth can fulfill both roles, since they draw in Fire- and Ice-type attacks, which are resisted by Gorebyss, and also resist Gorebyss's Electric- and Grass-type weaknesses. Other Baton Passers, such as Leafeon, Gligar, and Ambipom, also make good teammates, as they can form a Baton Pass chain for Gorebyss to fit into.

With an admirable base 114 Special Attack stat and enough Speed to outpace any UU Pokemon with Swift Swim activated, this South Sea Pokemon makes an excellent rain sweeper. Hydro Pump is Gorebyss's most powerful STAB attack, capable of OHKOing or 2HKOing almost anything that lacks a resistance or immunity to it. Surf is also an option for more accuracy, though it lacks the raw power of a rain-boosted Hydro Pump. Ice Beam complements Gorebyss's Water STAB nicely, landing super effective hits on the annoyingly ubiquitous Grass-types. Hidden Power Grass allows Gorebyss to cut through opposing Water-types, creating nigh-unresisted coverage in UU. In the last slot, Psychic is used to eliminate Toxicroak, Poliwrath, and Qwilfish, the former two of whom sport abilities that give them immunity to Water and would otherwise create endless amounts of trouble for a Rain Dance team. The current EV spread maximizes Gorebyss's potent Special Attack, and maximum Speed ensures that Gorebyss will always outspeed Jolly Swellow and anything slower with Rain Dance in play. Life Orb gives Gorebyss the power it desires and the versatility to switch moves, but Choice Specs is also a noteworthy option, as a Choice Specs rain-boosted Hydro Pump hits extremely hard, capable of 2HKOing Chansey and Milotic with just Stealth Rock support. Unfortunately, Gorebyss's movepool is extremely shallow, which leaves this fish high and dry with few remaining options. What little that it does get, however, should be used in the last slot in lieu of Psychic. Rain Dance can be used on a Life Orb set to prolong Gorebyss's sweep even after the previous bout of rain has ended. Baton Pass can be used on a Choice Specs set to scout the opponent's rain checks before committing Gorebyss to an attack. Aqua Tail can be used with Life Orb and a Rash nature if you really fear Chansey; Gorebyss will be able to 2HKO Chansey after Stealth Rock, though it's probably more efficient to just blast her with Specs Hydro Pump anyway. This Gorebyss requires the use of entry hazards, particularly Stealth Rock, to function to its maximum potential. Uxie and Mesprit can both set up Stealth Rock and provide Rain Dance support, making them excellent partners for Gorebyss. Registeel can do the same, while Gorebyss scares away the Ground- and Fire-type Pokemon that are the bane of Registeel's existence. Other rain sweepers are also excellent teammates. Ludicolo deserves a special mention because it can defeat Milotic, the most troublesome rain check in UU.

Baton Passer. Watch out for Electrics and phazers.

As you can see, Gorebyss has awesome Defense and Special Attack, while having crappy Speed and HP. So let's compare it to its rival, Omastar: HP: 70--Attack: 60--Defense: 125--Special Attack: 115--Special Defense: 70--Speed: 55 So Omastar has nearly same Special Attack, 5 less Special Defense, but a solid 15 more HP, which more than covers the Special Defense, and 20 more Defense. Gorebyss lacks the Rock-type, which can be a pain or your lifesaver; no Normal resistance hurts a lot, but Omastar is weak to the common Earthquake. Due to having a pure Water-type, you can't switch Gorebyss in on resistances, as Ice and Water are its only resistances, and you would get Toxiced by the common Waters. Rain Dance boosts your Speed and powers up Surf, turning Gorebyss into an offensive powerhouse.
