Although Roselia can be used to check certain weaker or passive physical attackers like Regirock, its mediocre physical bulk can prevent it from reliably handling them, meaning that it should only be done if absolutely necessary. If the opposing team has an entry hazard remover that Roselia is incapable of threatening, such as Skuntank or Cryogonal, aim to wear them down, double switch whenever anticipating them to switch in, or set Spikes in hopes of forcing the use of removal. Scout for moves that may cripple Roselia like Knock Off and Trick before switching directly into Pokemon such as Sableye and Jellicent, as Roselia is nearly completely dependent on Eviolite for its bulk. Team Options Roselia fits best on bulky offensive and balanced teams looking for a Spikes setter that can also keep a number of threats to the playstyles in check. Jellicent is a fantastic teammate, as it reliably blocks Rapid Spin thanks to its Ghost typing and solid bulk, takes advantage of Spikes to annoy defensive teams with its utility moves, and handles checks to Roselia such as Combusken and Crabominable while Roselia absorbs Toxic and Toxic Spikes on top of taking on Lurantis, Bellossom, and Lanturn. Choice Specs Jellicent also has an easier time wallbreaking with Spikes support. Specially defensive Alolan Sandslash appreciates having Poliwrath checked, can pressure Pokemon like Aurorus and mono-attacking Oricorio-E, completes an entry hazard-stacking core with Roselia, and can use Rapid Spin to keep Roselia from being worn down by opposing hazards without compromising its own. Given that Roselia's bulk stems from its Eviolite, it should be paired with Knock Off absorbers like Poliwrath, Throh, and Alolan Persian. The former two especially appreciate Spikes support, as it allows them to more easily wear opposing teams down with Circle Throw. Flying checks such as Regirock, Eelektross, and Oricorio-E are useful partners, as Roselia tends to bait in Flying-types such as Dodrio, Oricorio-G, and Swanna. Because Roselia struggles to deal meaningful damage to Steel-types like Alolan Sandslash and Metang, checks to them such as Gurdurr and Mudsdale are good partners. The former can also serve as a solid check to a number of physical attackers. Pursuit trappers such as Skuntank and Stoutland make for good teammates, since they can heavily damage or remove Ghost-types that freely switch into Roselia, such as Oricorio-G and Haunter, in addition to frail Rapid Spin users like Cryogonal and choice-locked Kabutops. Choice Band Skuntank also very much appreciates Spikes support, and can take Psychic-type attacks directed at Roselia.

Moves Roselia is one of the best Spikers for hyper offense teams, and it can set them reliably with a combination of its other moves and its surprise factor. Sludge Bomb is a strong STAB move with solid neutral coverage, notably hitting Xatu neutrally. Toxic Spikes in tandem with with Spikes chips away at teams without a grounded Poison-type with great ease. On the other hand, Leaf Storm hits extremely hard and nails opposing entry hazard setters such as Rhydon and Regirock, entry hazard removers such as Claydol and Sandslash, and Water-types such as Samurott, though Roselia can put most of them to sleep anyway. Sleep Powder immobilizes the foe for a few turns, keeping entry hazard setters and setup sweepers from setting up and entry hazard removers from doing away with Roselia's entry hazards. It also gives Roselia free turns to set up Spikes. Set Details Maximum Speed investment and a Timid nature allow Roselia to outspeed as much as possible, particularly most Skuntank sets, slow variants of Xatu, Mesprit, and Klinklang, Modest Claydol, and neutral-natured Samurott, and maximum Special Attack investment lets Roselia hit fairly hard. With Focus Sash, Roselia can take any hit if it hasn't taken any prior damage, guaranteeing that Roselia will set up at least one layer of Spikes. Poison Point is lead Roselia's only useful ability and can occasionally cripple physical attackers. Usage Tips Roselia should lead in most matches in order to lay down Spikes as early as possible and avoid having its Focus Sash broken by entry hazards. Roselia should typically start off by using Sleep Powder, preventing the foe from setting up or attacking it and creating a few free turns to lay entry hazards. When up against a team with Xatu, it's not recommended to set up Spikes until Xatu is out of the way; try to catch it on the switch with Sludge Bomb, 2HKOing it and potentially poisoning it. Certain setup sweepers such as Klinklang, Mawile, and Pawniard can be tricky to play around after Roselia has put a foe to sleep or if it's a fast Klinklang variant, and so they should be played around with teammates that can check them. Team Options Lead Roselia is a great option on hyper offense teams looking for a reliable entry hazard-stacking lead. Generally speaking, Roselia doesn't really need much support to perform its role, but certain teammates will make it more effective overall. Spinblockers such as Mismagius and Rotom are incredibly useful for keeping entry hazards up. A Pursuit trapper, such as Skuntank or Liepard, or a Xatu lure, such as Mesprit with Ice Beam, can make it easier for Roselia to set up Spikes against teams with Xatu, but it can 2HKO Xatu with Sludge Bomb anyway. Klinklang checks are also good partners, especially considering that fast variants can use Roselia as setup fodder. Pair Roselia up with offensive Pokemon that can take advantage of Spikes and Toxic Spikes to break through the opposing team, such as Tauros, Archeops, and Shiftry.

Moves Spikes wears down grounded Pokemon very quickly, especially when paired with Stealth Rock. Giga Drain is a decent Grass-type STAB move that can recover HP. Synthesis provides Roselia with reliable recovery and lets it remain healthy and set up Spikes throughout the match. Eviolite gives Roselia great special bulk and boosts its Defense stat to functional levels. Natural Cure makes Roselia a good status absorber, especially for Scald users such as Lanturn. An alternate EV spread of 252 HP / 120 Def / 136 SpD with a Calm nature hits a jump point in Special Defense and lets Roselia survive +2 Samurott's Megahorn after Stealth Rock most of the time. Usage Tips Switch in on the special Water-, Grass-, and Electric-types, such as Floatzel, Lilligant, and Rotom, that Roselia checks. Pokemon like Weezing, Vileplume, and Mega Audino also give Roselia free opportunities to switch in, and while it can't beat them one-on-one, Roselia can lay Spikes against them. In general, use most of Roselia's free turns to set up Spikes, occasionally attacking when wearing down switch-ins would be more useful; specifically, if the opponent has Xatu, it's best to go for Sludge Bomb as it switches in and potentially poison it, making it significantly easier to wear down. Team Options Defensive Roselia fits nicely on both balance and stall teams, with its Spikes wearing down the checks and counters of the former's fast sweepers and gnawing away at the opposing team for the latter. Rock-types such as Carracosta, Rhydon, and Regirock check the Flying- and Fire-types and, in general, the physical attackers that threaten Roselia and can also set up Stealth Rock, creating a nice entry hazard-stacking core; in return, Roselia takes on the Water- and Grass-types that maim them. Fire- and Water-types such as Magmortar and Samurott also beat Fire-types, with the former also checking Ice-types and the latter checking Archeops, and in return, Roselia's Spikes enhances their ability to sweep or wallbreak. Checks to Psychic-types, such as Scyther, Klinklang, and Dark- and Ghost-types, are decent partners to Roselia; notably, Skuntank can also Pursuit trap Xatu to allow Roselia to set up entry hazards more easily, and Ghost-types such as Mismagius can spinblock to help keep Spikes up. Quagsire is a particularly nice partner, as it compensates for not using Vileplume thanks to its ability to counter Swords Dance Samurott, Klinklang, and many other physical attackers, and the two possess good type synergy overall.

Moves Spikes-stacking is one of the most threatening strategies in the metagame, and Roselia makes for a potent offensive Spiker. Leaf Storm dents anything that doesn't resist it, and it takes the most advantage of the few turns Roselia will typically stay in. Sludge Bomb offers solid coverage and nails Grass-, Flying-, Bug-, and Fire-types. Sleep Powder allows Roselia to immobilize would-be counters, especially Poison- and Steel-types, and creates free turns for it to set up more Spikes. Giga Drain is a more consistent Grass-type STAB move that also gives it Roselia more longevity, but Leaf Storm typically ends up doing more damage regardless because Roselia will rarely stay in for more than a few turns, and Sludge Bomb is already a consistent STAB move anyway. Synthesis is an option, especially in for bulky variants, that allows Roselia to play as a more reliable Grass- and Water-type check. Set Details Maximum Special Attack investment and a Modest nature make Roselia surprisingly powerful, notably 2HKOing Xatu with Sludge Bomb. The Speed EVs let Roselia outspeed neutral-natured base 55 Speed Pokemon such as Cacturne and Golurk, and the remaining EVs are put into HP to make Roselia bulkier. A bulkier spread is also an option, running at least 56 Speed EVs to outspeed Adamant Rhydon. Eviolite gives Roselia passable bulk. Natural Cure allows Roselia to act as a status absorber, especially for Scald users. Usage Tips Roselia should come in on resisted Water-, Grass-, and Electric-type moves, but you must be careful of super effective coverage moves, as this set doesn't have the bulk to shrug them off. Use most free turns afforded by Sleep Powder and Roselia's ability to threaten Pokemon out to set up Spikes, occasionally dishing out Leaf Storm and Sludge Bomb to dent switch-ins such as Garbodor, Magmortar, and especially Xatu, which can bounce back Roselia's entry hazards. Go for Sleep Powder against switch-ins such as Garbodor and Skuntank that otherwise counter Roselia; use the free turn to either set up Spikes or switch out to a teammate that takes advantage of the switch-in. Team Options Roselia fits best on fast offensive teams that appreciate its ability to check Water-, Rock, and Ground-types better than Garbodor and its ability to check Grass-types, not fall over to Fighting-types and Mega Audino, and actually hit harder with Leaf Storm than Cacturne. Offensive checks to Fire-types, such as Samurott, Magmortar, and Hariyama, are good partners, with the latter two also checking Ice-types. The likes of Klinklang and Rhydon handle the Flying-types Roselia struggles with; Klinklang can beat Psychic-types for Roseila as well. Dark- and Ghost-types, such as Liepard and Mismagius, can also beat Psychic-types. Generally speaking, fast Pokemon such as Tauros, Archeops, and Floatzel help to make up for Roselia's middling Speed. In return, Roselia's Spikes support allows its offensive partners to swiftly wear down their checks and counters so that they can sweep.

This set takes advantage of Roselia's access to Spikes and solid special bulk, which allows it to switch into most special attacks with relative ease. Roselia can also use its Toxic immunity to grant it free switches and start setting up Spikes. Rest restores all of Roselia's HP, increasing its longevity at the cost of having to switch out so that Natural Cure can wake it up. Synthesis can be used instead to let Roselia stay in longer and set up more layers of Spikes. Giga Drain is Roselia's primary STAB attack, hitting common Pokemon such as Golem and Samurott for super effective damage. Sludge Bomb is useful for hitting the many Pokemon that resist Giga Drain, such as Charizard, Tangela, and Serperior, and gives Roselia a way to hit Pokemon with Sap Sipper. A specially defensive spread is usually Roselia's best option because of its ability to check common special attackers. Additionally, Armaldo is the only spinner in the tier capable of switching into Roselia without being 2HKOed after Stealth Rock damage, as Wartortle and Torkoal can be taken down by Giga Drain and Sludge Bomb, respectively. Although better at being a special wall, Roselia is also capable of running a physically defensive spread well—this allows her to utilize her more physically-inclined defensive typing while still having good special bulk. By utilizing such a spread, Roselia can now check Ground-types, such as Golem, more easily. However, while this variant of Roselia does have its merits, it still has some glaring flaws—for example, Roselia's physical bulk is still not fantastic even when invested, and it can still be 2HKOed by many common physical attackers in the tier, such as Golurk and Kangaskhan. Additionally, this comes at the cost of Roselia failing to check special attackers, such as Ludicolo and Samurott, nearly as well as specially defensive variants, as it's far more vulnerable to Ice Beam. As Roselia's Defense is lacking, it appreciates having a Pokemon to take physical hits for it. Alomomola is one of the best options, as not only can it take physical hits for Roselia, but it also resists the Fire- and Ice-type moves that ruin Roselia's day. Meanwhile, Roselia can take any Electric- and Grass-type attacks, as well as Toxics, aimed at Alomomola. It should be noted that Alomomola does not beat most Ice-types, it just tanks their hits in order to pivot to another partner. Musharna is another great partner, as it can effectively wall Sawk, one of the bigger threats to Roselia. Bastiodon is also a good choice thanks to its access to Stealth Rock, and it synergizes well with Roselia typing wise. As for spinblockers, Misdreavus is one of the best options, not only because of its bulk, but also because it can burn the physical attackers that threaten Roselia. Finally, Skuntank makes a good partner, as it can take care of any Psychic-types that threaten Roselia with Pursuit.

With an offensive set, Roselia can serve as a bulky offensive pivot and status absorber for more offensive and balanced teams. Roselia can come in, take a hit, strike back with strong STABs coming off of base 100 Special Attack, and use Sleep Powder to disrupt the opposing team. The ability to absorb Toxic Spikes along with Poison STAB really separate Roselia from other bulky offensive pivots such as Tangela. Without Spikes on this set, Roselia is able to use Sleep Powder to cripple would-be checks that would normally have nothing to fear. Sludge Bomb is Roselia's most powerful STAB move, and it has really good neutral coverage and a handy chance to poison the foe. Giga Drain, Roselia's other STAB, covers the Ground- and Rock-types that resist Sludge Bomb, and it also lets Roselia take on bulky Water-types such as Seismitoad and Alomomola that can be problematic for offensive teams. Synthesis allows Roselia to remain healthy throughout the match, and it can be used to heal up against the Pokemon that are put to sleep by Sleep Powder. The Speed EVs used on this set are to allow Roselia to outspeed max Speed Golem, Armaldo, and Marowak, with the rest thrown into Special Attack and HP for offensive presence and added bulk. Both Eviolite and Natural Cure allow Roselia to come in against a variety of attackers and absorb status for the team. Toxic Spikes or Spikes could be used on this set, but using Spikes would mean that you can't use Sleep Powder, as the two are illegal together, and Roselia doesn't usually have room for Toxic Spikes. Leaf Storm can be used over Giga Drain, but Roselia likes to stay in for as long as it can without being forced to switch out. For this same reason, though Rest might sound better than Synthesis thanks to Natural Cure, it is usually inferior. Roselia partners really well with other pivots that share great defensive synergy. Metang and Regirock are both good options, as they can set up Stealth Rock, and Metang can take on Flying-, Psychic-, and Ice-type attacks while Regirock can take on Flying- and Fire-type attacks. In return, Roselia can take on opposing Water- and Grass-types really well and also has a good matchup against most Ground-types. Practically every Steel-type walls Roselia completely, so offensive partners that can take them on will prove to be beneficial. Strong Fighting-types such as Sawk and Fire-types such as Charizard and Camerupt can come in on most Steel-types and take them on with their STAB super effective attacks. Finally, Roselia's ability to absorb Toxic Spikes is greatly appreciated by setup sweepers that play significantly worse while poisoned. Carracosta loves the lack of Toxic Spikes on its side of the field, and it can set up against Fire- and Flying-types that try to take out Roselia. Similarly, Swords Dance Samurott can set up against Ice- and Fire-types and hates to be poisoned.

If your team is in need of a Pokemon that is able to set up Spikes and take on many defensive threats, Spikes Roselia may indeed be the Pokemon for you. Roselia is one of two Grass-types with access to Spikes (the other being Cacturne) and has the typing and Special Defense necessary to set up Spikes on many Pokemon. Milotic, Registeel, Chansey, Rotom, and even some Venusaur (although it may require the -2 Special Attack drop from Leaf Storm first) can all be Spiked upon with ease. If Roselia's HP drops too much, Synthesis or Leech Seed can be used to restore health, while its ability, Natural Cure, cures any status ailments afflicted upon Roselia. Stun Spore can be a huge boost for Roselia by paralyzing offensive threats, especially since there are no other viable status moves available (Sleep Powder and Spikes are illegal together). Common switch-ins to this set include Arcanine, Moltres, and Mismagius, all of which are extremely hindered and almost unusable after being paralyzed with Stun Spore. To prevent Roselia from being stopped completely by Taunt, Energy Ball is used in the last moveslot. Energy Ball also deals impressive damage to many common Rapid Spinners, including Donphan, Kabutops, and Blastoise. Synthesis is the preferred option over Leech Seed, as Synthesis gives Roselia a reliable recovery move that can't be blocked by immunities, missing, or Substitute. However, Leech Seed can force more switches, giving it more time to use Spikes. The decision ultimately comes down to how long you wish to keep Roselia alive. If its purpose on your team is to set up Spikes whenever possible and just sit as a filler, Leech Seed is probably the better option. However, if you want Roselia to be able to stay alive and be a decent answer to many Rapid Spinners as well as other special attackers, Synthesis is much better. The last attack should usually be Energy Ball to deal with Rapid Spinners, but Sludge Bomb is the stronger STAB attack. However, Sludge Bomb has many problems as an attacking move, allowing Pokemon such as Rhyperior to set up easily on it and giving Milotic an easier time surviving and eventually damaging Roselia. Shed Shell can be a somewhat useful item, as Roselia is dreadfully weak to Dugtrio. If your team relies on Spikes, Shed Shell may be a good item to use, if only to ensure Roselia's safety. 60 Speed EVs allow it to outspeed Hitmontop, which sometimes might allow Roselia to finish Hitmontop off with Energy Ball before it can Rapid Spin your Spikes away. You could add to bulk and make Roselia's EV spread 252 HP / 252 SpD / 4 Spe, but there is no reason to not try and take advantage of outspeeding a Rapid Spinner. Roselia could run 96 Speed EVs to outspeed Jolly 252 Speed Rhyperior, although the current spread will outspeed Adamant 252 Speed Rhyperior. The choice depends entirely on how much bulk you are willing to sacrifice. Rest can be used over either of the healing moves, giving Roselia full recovery at very low cost due to Natural Cure's status healing ability. However, it forces Roselia to switch out and back in to be useful again, giving the opponent free turns as well. Offensive teams truly benefit from Roselia's Spikes, as they turn many 2HKOs into OHKOs. It can also help cover many holes found in offensive teams, such as weaknesses to Registeel, Chansey, and even Rotom. However, Roselia is not much of an attacker and should not be used to keep the momentum rolling; instead, use it set up more layers of Spikes to ensure that other sweepers can clean up. Stall teams appreciate Roselia very much, as it provides a valuable check to many Pokemon that threaten stall-based Pokemon. A partner such as Milotic to take Fire-type attacks without much harm can help Roselia obtain extra turns for Spiking. Roselia's major issue is its general lack of stats. Being a pre-evolution, it unfortunately doesn't have the Speed and defenses to defend against many powerful Pokemon found in UU. Every Fire-type and any strong physical attacker can easily OHKO Roselia. It must also beware of Hitmontop that carry Foresight - if Roselia switches to a Ghost-type to try and block Rapid Spin, Hitmontop can use Foresight to KO them, while if Roselia stays in, it risks being taken out by Hitmontop due to its low bulk. Therefore, bulky Water-types and a double Ghost strategy can be useful. Milotic can safeguard Roselia from Fire-types with ease due to its huge special bulk, while utilizing two of either Rotom, Spiritomb, or Mismagius can help block Hitmontop's spin easily.

This set takes a much more offensive approach that is still designed to set up entry hazards. Egg move limitations prevent Roselia from running certain move combinations, meaning that which form of Spikes you want to run will influence the rest of the moveset. Sleep Powder and Leaf Storm, both of which are illegal with Spikes and are meant to be used with Toxic Spikes, turn Roselia into a fierce weapon that can force switches, giving it even more chances to use Toxic Spikes. Leaf Storm has 210 Base Power after factoring in STAB, making Roselia a frightening threat. The last slot is saved for Sludge Bomb, which gives great neutral coverage all-around. Spikes is an alternative over Toxic Spikes for laying the hurt on every grounded Pokemon, while not being easily absorbed by Poison-types, unlike Toxic Spikes. If you opt for Spikes, then running Synthesis and Energy Ball over Sleep Powder and Leaf Storm, respectively, is a must. Synthesis gives Roselia a instant recovery move that allows for more set up time throughout a match, while Energy Ball enables Roselia to deal consistent damage overall. The Speed EVs allow Roselia to outspeed almost every variant of Milotic except Life Orb versions. Thanks to the Special Attack investment, Roselia can then 2HKO or OHKO Milotic, depending on entry hazards, its move (Energy Ball or Leaf Storm), and Milotic's defenses. 252 EVs in HP give Roselia survivability and the chance to still set up Spikes or Toxic Spikes against more defensive Pokemon. This set can be transitioned into a lead, putting slower Pokemon to sleep and then setting up Toxic Spikes early. Omastar, for example, can be put to sleep and then set up on or simply KOed. Focus Sash should be used over Leftovers in this case, protecting it from faster leads such as Moltres and putting them to sleep. Houndoom makes an excellent partner to Roselia, absorbing Fire-type attacks while also using Nasty Plot against sleeping opponents. As an added bonus, many of Houndoom's counters, such as Chansey, Milotic, and Blastoise, despise Toxic Spikes and Spikes. Dugtrio and Fire-types are useful for eliminating grounded Poison-types that absorb Toxic Spikes. Moltres can not only keep them at bay but also use Toxic Spikes to its advantage with a SubRoost set. An odd combination of Roselia and Venusaur can actually work well, despite their redundant typing together. Roselia will lure in the opponent's Grass/Poison-type counter (usually reserved for Venusaur) and allows you to act accordingly. Afterward, Venusaur can be brought in to set up Swords Dance or wreck opposing teams with Leaf Storm and Sludge Bomb. Just as Venusaur can be used as an ally, it also is Roselia's great enemy, doing a lot of damage with Life Orb Sludge Bomb or even OHKOing with Swords Dance boosted Returns. Venusaur can also take Roselia's Leaf Storms with ease and absorb Toxic Spikes. In order for Roselia to excel, Venusaur's removal must be prioritized. Other Pokemon to watch out for are faster Fire-types and other Poison-types that can absorb Toxic Spikes and resist Roselia's two STAB attacks. Mismagius is a very dangerous threat, as it is able to Taunt or set up a Substitute on Roselia and then proceed to set up Nasty Plots or Calm Minds.

Set Description Roselia's a great Spiker because many common Pokemon, such as Wailord, defensive Relicanth, and Mawile, can't pressure it enough to prevent it from setting Spikes. Synthesis keeps Roselia healthy, letting it continue setting Spikes and checking Pokemon like Huntail and Plusle. Giga Drain helps Roselia immensely against offensive Wailord and Huntail, healing it for a great amount and letting it take multiple Ice Beams, although Hidden Power Grass works on and against bulkier teams due to its greater PP. Stun Spore dissuades Flying-types like Pidgeot and Murkrow as well as Haunter from switching into Roselia while it sets Spikes. Alternatively, Aromatherapy turns Roselia into a cleric and lets it support other bulky teammates by healing them of poison. Hidden Power Fire targets Steel- and Grass-types like Metang, Mawile, Bellossom, and Tropius as well as Glalie. 20 Defense EVs prevent non-Choice Band Pidgeot's Aerial Ace from OHKOing Roselia, while the remaining EVs go into special bulk to improve its matchup against foes like Wailord and Pikachu. It's ideal to set Spikes as early as possible; although Roselia will have multiple opportunities to each game thanks to Synthesis keeping it healthy, the chip damage from Spikes helps create and press advantages greatly. Due to Roselia's average bulk, it must be careful of coverage moves like Wailord's Ice Beam; be sure to monitor Roselia's health carefully so that it isn't put in range of a 2HKO from such attacks. Several Pokemon that can take advantage of Roselia detest being paralyzed; using Stun Spore on a predicted switch is generally a low-drawback play, so long as setting Spikes isn't necessary. Team Options Checks to Hitmonchan are mandatory to pair alongside Roselia, as it's unable to prevent Hitmonchan from switching into it and removing its Spikes with Rapid Spin. Sableye and Chimecho are great partners for this reason, and they also check other Pokemon that threaten Roselia such as Haunter, Golbat, and Chimecho. In return, Roselia checks certain offensive Water-types like Wailord, Huntail, and Seadra. Wallbreakers and late-game sweepers like Metang, Haunter, and Wailord greatly benefit from Roselia's Spikes; furthermore, Metang and Wailord enjoy Stun Spore support, since they're rather slow. Backup checks to special attackers, like Lickitung and Dewgong, are helpful, since Roselia's bulk can lead to it folding to strong, super effective coverage moves.
