Defensive Ivysaur is an excellent utility Pokemon in the NFE tier thanks to its helpful typing and solid bulk. With Knock Off to remove Eviolite, Ivysaur can make foes like Dunsparce and Koffing much easier to handle for teammates that struggle against them, like Piloswine and Monferno. Sludge Bomb is a great STAB attack as it can allow Ivysaur to land poisons against defensive staples like Dunsparce and Hattrem, wearing them down quickly. Leech Seed is a great option to help sit on defensive switch-ins like Tinkatuff and Hisuian Sliggoo. Ivysaur is a superb wall against foes like Gabite, Thwackey, and Servine. Ivysaur is a great choice for balance and bulky offense teams that want a grounded Poison-type to absorb Toxic Spikes while offering tremendous utility in the form of Knock Off support. Teammates that can appreciate the Eviolite and Toxic Spikes removal include setup sweepers like Girafarig, Monferno, and Dunsparce, helping blow past foes like Tinkatuff and Drakloak; wallbreakers like Pignite and Thwackey also benefit greatly, breaking through walls like Koffing and Dunsparce much easier. Stealth Rock setters like Piloswine and Tinkatuff have great defensive synergy with Ivysaur and are valuable to help wear down the opposition with entry hazard chip damage, as well as, in Tinkatuff's case, helping spread status with Thunder Wave to enable the aforementioned offensive threats even further. Quaxwell is a great teammate, helping sponge attacks from Fire-types like Pignite and Raboot while offering hazard removal to help Ivysaur not get worn down as quickly. Ivysaur, despite its Poison-typing, has a hard time breaking past Koffing because of its combination of Will-O-Wisp and Sludge Bomb; partners like Drakloak and Hisuian Sliggoo are important to help keep Koffing in check. Girafarig and Piloswine are notable threats to Ivysaur, making teammates like Quaxwell and Tinkatuff even more valuable.

Ivysaur is a very threatening sweeper and wallbreaker in sun. Thanks to its great Eviolite-boosted bulk, Toxic immunity, and resistances for common attackers such as Thwackey and Sawk, it can easily find opportunities to set up with Growth in sun. The listed attacks perfectly cover the whole metagame, with Weather Ball hitting Pokemon the likes of Klinklang, Skuntank, and Articuno that can take on Ivysaur's STAB moves. Chlorophyll with a Timid nature lets Ivysaur outspeed prominent Choice Scarf users like Rotom, Sawk, and Silvally in sun. Ivysaur only fits on dedicated sun teams, so staples of this archetype make for great partners. For example Uxie and Liepard are two amazing sun setters. Other Chlorophyll users such as Shiftry, Leafeon, and Exeggutor appreciate Ivysaur weakening their common checks like Fire-types and Altaria, as well as beating Poison-types like Skuntank and Silvally-Poison thanks to Weather Ball, in order for them to clean late-game. Fire-types like Ninetales and Rapidash also enjoy sun support and help Ivysaur and the other Chlorophyll users with opposing Fire-types.

The combination of Growth and Chlorophyll enables Ivysaur to be one of the most threatening sweepers in NFE. After a Growth and Stealth Rock damage, Solar Beam has a 93% chance to OHKO Eviolite Electabuzz, OHKOes a plethora of offensive Pokemon such as Gurdurr and Galarian Linoone, and 2HKOes every single Pokemon that does not resist Grass. While weaker, Giga Drain lets Ivysaur retain its bulk while sweeping, making it less likely to be revenge killed by Ice Shard Piloswine. Giga Drain is also able to be used after sun turns are over. Weather Ball gives Ivysaur a coverage move to hit Ferroseed and Klang, as well as other Steel-types for super effective damage, while also hitting Vullaby for significant damage. Sludge Bomb lets Iyvsaur do substantial amounts of damage outside of sun. Sleep Powder helps Iyvsaur set up on troublesome switch-ins like Galarian Corsola, and Rufflet, while Synthesis heals Iyvsaur, increasing its longevity without resorting to Giga Drain. The EV spread gives Iyvsaur enough speed to outspeed the entire unboosted metagame along with Choice Scarf Lampent under sun. Vulpix is Ivysaur's most important teammate, as it automatically sets up sun whenever it switches in. Additional sun sweepers are helpful, whether it's other Chlorophyll Pokemon such as Tangela or Fire-types like Lampent, Charmeleon, and Raboot. Ivysaur is especially vulnerable to Steel-types outside of sun, so the aforementioned Fire-types are useful for breaking past these threats. Some form of entry hazard removal is also recommended, as Ivysaur can be worn down by entry hazards rather quickly, so Hattrem or Wartortle is a good partner. Particularly, specially defensive Wartortle is a good partner, as it helps check Fire-types such as Lampent and Charmeleon while being able to pivot with Flip Turn. Shell Smash Wartortle with Weather Ball is a more offensive teammate option as well.

Armed with excellent bulk and solid utility options, Ivysaur stands out as an elite defensive Pokemon. Knock Off cripples walls and checks like Dustox, Bronzor, and Quilladin, Pokemon that would otherwise freely switch into it. Giga Drain makes Ivysaur more consistent against Grass-weak targets like Gigalith, Huntail, and Krokorok, while Leech Seed can force the aforementioned checks as well as Steel-types like Klang to switch out and supplies Ivysaur additional recovery. The EV spread prevents a 2HKO from Politoed's Ice Beam and a 3HKO from non-Choice Band Krokorok. While Chlorophyll is situational, under sun, Ivysaur can outspeed everything up to Murkrow. Ivysaur fits best on bulky and balance teams that appreciate its bulk and typing, checking Pokemon like Servine, Electabuzz, and Gigalith. Offensive wallbreakers like Pignite and Simipour appreciate Ivysaur removing items through Knock Off, making it easier to break through checks like Carbink and Dustox later in the game. Ivysaur's passivity leaves it vulnerable to Fire-types like Pignite and Magmar and wallbreakers like Frogadier and Swoobat, so other walls like Politoed and defensive Klang are appreciated. Outside of Knock Off and Leech Seed, Ivysaur fails to threaten Steel-types, so checks to them like Krokorok and Magmar are appreciated as well. Knock Off absorbers like Carbink and Wigglytuff are also appreciated to maintain its usefulness as a wall.

Ivysaur is a staple on sun teams thanks to its great bulk bolstered by Eviolite, solid power, and variety of coverage moves. Growth augments its offensive potential, making it even scarier to face off against. Solar Beam is preferred thanks to its massive damage output under sun; Giga Drain can be used outside of sun and gives Ivysaur additional longevity. Hidden Power Fire is Ivysaur's strongest option against foes resistant to its STAB moves, like Dustox, Bronzor, and Klang. Sun setters like Volbeat and Graveler are essential to allow Ivysaur opportunities to wallbreak or sweep under sun; Volbeat can cripple checks with Thunder Wave and Encore, while Graveler can provide Stealth Rock and momentum with Explosion. Other sun sweepers like Sawsbuck and Jumpluff are also useful partners, appreciating Ivysaur weakening checks like Swalot and Bronzor. In turn, they can help take on Fire-types and defensive Duosion, checks that Ivysaur struggles to get past. Fire-types like Magmar and Pignite stand out as great partners, weakening the aforementioned checks so Ivysaur can have an easier time cleaning late-game. In turn, Ivysaur can help break through Water- and Rock-types that they struggle against.

Ivysaur's Grass / Poison typing and solid defensive stats with Eviolite make it a capable wall against Grass- and Water-type physical attackers such as Leafeon, Meganium, Kingler, and Whiscash. A passive wall like Ivysaur would ordinarily struggle with Pokemon immune to Toxic, but its access to Knock Off is great for ruining opposing walls like Clefairy, Wormadam-S, and Staryu that depend on their items for their longevity. Pokemon like Arbok, Pawniard, and Shelgon that look to take advantage of Ivysaur don't enjoy losing their items when they switch into it either. Sludge Bomb is Ivysaur's best attack between its power, chance to poison, and super effective damage against Leafeon and Meganium. Synthesis keeps Ivysaur healthy in longer games against foes like Staryu, Mienfoo, and Hippopotas. Giga Drain disposes of Kingler and Whiscash, increases Ivysaur's pressure against Frillish and Solrock, and keeps Ivysaur healthy. Overgrow provides a situational but helpful boost to Giga Drain if Ivysaur is brought to low HP. Leech Seed can be used over Giga Drain to wear down targets Ivysaur does little damage to, such as Muk, Wormadam-S, and Arbok. However, without Giga Drain, Ivysaur is less effective against Water- and Ground-types like Kingler and Whiscash that it wants to check. If Ivysaur runs Leech Seed, it should run Chlorophyll instead of Overgrow to at least have a situational boost. Ivysaur best supports teammates such as specially defensive Clefairy, Grumpig, and Mr. Mime that struggle with physical attackers. In return, Ivysaur's specially defensive partners patch up its vulnerability to common specially offensive Pokemon such as Mr. Mime, Grumpig, Glaceon, and Simisear. Solrock can set up entry hazards to wear down offensive checks to Ivysaur like Simisear and Glaceon, while Ivysaur checks Grass-types like Meganium and Leafeon for Solrock. Staryu can keep hazards off the field for Ivysaur, while Ivysaur supports Staryu by checking Grass- and Electric-types. Status absorbers such as Clefairy and the aforementioned Staryu are good partners to Ivysaur, as it struggles to wall foes if afflicted with burn or poison. Frillish can keep hazards up to wear down checks to Ivysaur, while Ivysaur takes on Grass-types for it. Unless it's running Leech Seed, Ivysaur cannot meaningfully damage Muk and makes little impact on Arbok besides removing its item. Ground- and Rock-types like Whiscash, Hippopotas, Solrock, and Lairon can cover Ivysaur's vulnerability to Poison-types. In turn, Ivysaur shields them from their Grass weaknesses. Ivysaur's weakness to Flying-types like Emolga and Pelipper can be covered by partners like Solrock, Raichu, and Lairon. Conversely, Ivysaur can check Grass-types like Meganium and Leafeon that its aforementioned partners may struggle with. Eviolite is key for Ivysaur to maintain its longevity, so teammates that can intercept Knock Off and Trick like Emolga, Muk, and Grumpig are appreciated.
