Analysis

Weak Armor Onix is a defensive stalwart that reliably sets Stealth Rock while also checking Koffing and Ponyta well. High Horsepower is the STAB move of choice when paired with Grookey. Onix is a great Stealth Rock setter because of its ability to threaten Natu, which might otherwise deny hazards with Magic Bounce. Explosion lets Onix deal heavy damage, especially against bulky foes like Timburr and Foongus. Weak Armor lets Onix switch into physical threats like Ponyta and outspeed them after taking a hit. This set is beneficial to teammates that need reliable Stealth Rock setting, especially against Natu. Grookey and Abra appreciate this, as Stealth Rock lets both handle Natu more reliably, though the former necessitates the use of High Horsepower. Ferroseed appreciates Onix handling Koffing, Ponyta, and Natu, and it in turn handles Staryu, Porygon, and Frillish for Onix. Onix's Stealth Rock also allows Ferroseed to run Spikes. Frillish also handles special attackers like Staryu and Porygon well. Foongus and Koffing check Grookey and Fighting-types, and Koffing can also threaten Ferroseed and Foongus. Natu can switch into Mudbray, Ferroseed, and Foongus reliably.

Analysis

Onix is both a reliable Stealth Rock setter and an excellent safety net against threatening foes like Ponyta and Tyrunt. High Horsepower is the STAB move of choice when Onix is paired with Grookey. Onix is an excellent Stealth Rock user because of its Speed, bulk, and ability to threaten Natu. Explosion does major damage to neutral foes and can be used to prevent setup from the likes of Porygon and Grookey or recovery from Timburr's Drain Punch. Endure lets Onix guarantee recovery with Berry Juice after it has taken chip damage. Sturdy and Berry Juice pair excellently, allowing Onix to take powerful hits and heal to full. Onix pairs well with teammates that want to guarantee Stealth Rock against Natu. Ferroseed is a valuable partner that can switch into Water-types, Abra, and Porygon, while Onix can switch into Ponyta and Koffing and allow it to run Spikes. Grookey is a strong teammate because it needs Stealth Rock support to beat Natu and benefits from Onix handling Ponyta, though it does necessitate the use of High Horsepower over Earthquake. Frillish handles threatening attackers like Staryu and Porygon well. Bulky Poison-types like Koffing and Mareanie handle Fighting-types well, and Koffing and Foongus check Grookey. Natu reliably switches into Grass-types and Mudbray.

Analysis

Dragon Dance Onix is a dangerous sweeper that outspeeds most common Choice Scarf users at +1 and uses its bulk to set up on common foes like Koffing and Choice-locked Porygon. Head Smash can overwhelm even bulky foes like Staryu at +1. High Horsepower should be used if paired with Grookey. Explosion lets Onix heavily damage foes it cannot OHKO, such as Timburr. This set can run Stealth Rock for role compression, as Onix is still an effective setter. This set wants teammates that can handle the foes it cannot reliably break through, such as Ferroseed, Foongus, Timburr, and Grookey. Koffing can check both Grass-types and Fighting-types and deny Regenerator recovery for Foongus and Mienfoo, wearing them down. Trapinch and Focus Sash Diglett can sometimes trap Grookey, though Grookey often runs Protect to deny Trapinch's First Impression. Knock Off support from Mienfoo, Ferroseed, Mareanie, and Pawniard helps soften foes into KO range at +1. This set is still bulky and can form a solid defensive core with Frillish and Ferroseed.

Analysis

Moves Stealth Rock is a powerful entry hazard that does chip damage to all switch-ins and breaks Sturdy on opposing threats such as Magnemite. Rock Blast usually does more damage than Stone Edge due to the way multi-hit moves work in LC and also works very well against foes with Weak Armor, such as Vullaby. Earthquake is a powerful secondary STAB option that gets almost perfect neutral coverage with Rock Blast. Explosion can be used as a suicide attack to heavily damage a single threat, while Protect is useful to scout Choice Scarf users, notably Magnemite, and deter High Jump Kick from Mienfoo. Taunt shuts down opposing walls, setup sweepers, and hazard setters. Set Details The given EV spread with a Jolly nature maximizes Onix's Attack and allows it to outspeed key threats such as Pawniard and Dwebble. The HP investment lets it survive Reckless Mienfoo's High Jump Kick and Diglett's Tectonic Rage from full health. Weak Armor doubles Onix's Speed whenever it is hit by a physical attack, which pairs well with its titanic Defense stat, and Eviolite boosts Onix's defenses even further. Usage Tips Although Weak Armor Onix appears very similar to the Sturdy set at first glance, the two sets play very differently from each other. This set is one of the best answers to Flying-types in the metagame thanks to its typing and massive Defense stat; do not be afraid to freely switch Onix into the likes of Vullaby and Doduo. Take advantage of the Speed boost Weak Armor can provide to revenge kill opposing sweepers such as Shell Smash Dwebble, set up an emergency Stealth Rock, or take out a threat with Explosion. With prediction, this set can even beat a slightly weakened Staryu by staying in on a predicted Rapid Spin and using Earthquake twice. Team Options Reliable switch-ins to Water-, Grass-, and Fighting-types, such as Foongus and Vullaby, are a necessity, as Onix is easily OHKOed by their STAB attacks. Pokemon that appreciate a reliable switch-in to Flying-types, such as Timburr, also make good partners. Because Staryu forms a potent core with Sturdy Onix, running it can potentially help bluff Onix's Sturdy set. Wish users such as Spritzee can provide added longevity, as Onix lacks recovery. Finally, offensive threats that appreciate Stealth Rock such as Shellder and Snivy work well on a team with Onix.

Analysis

Moves Stealth Rock can help break opposing Sturdy Pokemon and pave the way for a sweep from a powerful Pokemon such as Omanyte or Scraggy. Rock Blast is a good general Rock-type STAB move and is useful for defeating opposing Berry Juice users, Archen and Dwebble in particular, as well as Weak Armor Vullaby. Earthquake is Onix's Ground-type STAB move, is very powerful, and is just generally good with its 100% accuracy. Endure is useful to activate Berry Juice and regain Sturdy if Onix has initially taken damage from hazards or weak attacks. Taunt is an acceptable option to prevent opposing entry hazard setters from doing their job. Set Details Onix has a Jolly nature and maximum Speed investment so it can get 17 Speed, letting it Speed tie with many common threats in LC such as Mienfoo and Snivy as well as Taunt Dwebble. The rest of its EVs are put into Attack and HP; the former gives Onix extra attacking power, and the latter gives it maximum recovery from Berry Juice. Sturdy helps Onix take any one attack when at full HP and, can be very annoying to deal with in conjunction with Berry Juice. Usage Tips Onix works as an amazing lead due to its ability Sturdy against other leads such as Dwebble. With a drop in Mienfoo leads, it has become even better. Treating Onix as just a suicide lead is never a good idea, however, as it can be useful in all stages of the game. Onix can also be conserved for stopping common sweepers such as Omanyte and Zigzagoon late-game, but your team should usually already have a check for these, and Onix should only be used if all other checks are gone. Keeping Sturdy intact is usually useful, but Onix can be a good switch-in to many Flying- and Electric-types. Team Options Onix is perfect for teams that can't fit an entry hazard setter normally due to its Sturdy and Speed stat. Onix can help check Flying- and Electric-types for Pokemon such as Carvanha and Snivy. Pumpkaboo makes for a great partner for Onix, as it blocks Rapid Spin and checks the Water- and Grass-types that Onix struggles with. Any Pokemon that checks Water- and Grass-types, specifically Staryu and Ferroseed, makes for a good teammate for Onix. Staryu itself can also make a great partner, as it can clear away entry hazards and check Water-, and to some extent, Fighting-types.

Analysis

Onix has the Speed and the moves to run an excellent Stealth Rock set. Dragon Tail works somewhat like Roar, but does damage in addition to forcing a switch. Earthquake and Stone Edge are Onix's two primary STAB attacks, getting near-perfect neutral coverage. Protect can be used to prevent Fake Out users such as Meowth from ruining Sturdy. This set is very good at countering many of the common Pokemon that like to set up. Dragon Tail forces the opponent to switch, deleting its boosts. As mentioned previously, Sturdy is a useful ability, allowing Onix to live through any hit at full HP. Eviolite is a great item to have, boosting Onix's already insanely high Defense to an amazing 36, allowing Onix to take all physical attacks with ease. A Careful nature boosts Onix's Special Defense, but most special attacks will still easily OHKO Onix, so running an Impish nature to boost Onix's Defense further is the better option. Despite the power drop which Explosion received this generation, it can also be run. Hippopotas is a good teammate, as it can set up sandstorm, which will boost Onix's below average Special Defense to acceptable levels.

Analysis

Like most of its Rock-type brethren, Onix can also run a Rock Polish set to boost its Speed and attempt a sweep. Earthquake and Stone Edge are Onix's two primary STAB attacks, getting near-perfect neutral coverage. Despite the power drop which Explosion received, it still proves useful in many situations, allowing Onix to KO or weaken many Pokemon not using an Eviolite. Eviolite is a great choice to help Onix pull off a Rock Polish, but the power drop from the lack of Life Orb is noticeable. Natu is a great partner for Onix, easily setting up dual screens to allow Onix to set up safely. As mentioned, Hippopotas can also help Onix set up by setting up sandstorm, which boosts Onix's mediocre Special Defense.

Analysis

Onix is able to do one thing extremely well: set up Stealth Rock. It is able to do this reliably by abusing two key attributes: its Defense and access to Explosion. With its sky-high Defense, Onix can laugh at the attacks Meowth and other Fake Out leads rely on to cause damage, while Onix sets up and starts firing off attacks. Onix can attack with either Earthquake or Stone Edge, as both receive the STAB boost and provide excellent coverage. In the final move slot, Explosion can get Onix a surprise kill once it has finished its job, while Taunt can stop every lead bar Diglett, Gligar, and Anorith from setting up entry hazards. While Onix is one of the more reliable leads in Little Cup, some common leads stop it cold. Snover deserves mention as it can OHKO Onix with Blizzard and negate Onix's Focus Sash due to hail damage. Munchlax is your best option against Snover, thanks to its Thick Fat ability and access to Fire Punch. Machop can use a combination of Dynamic Punch and Bullet Punch to halt Onix in its tracks. Unfortunately, Machop is much harder to deal with due to the confusion that Dynamic Punch brings, though Bronzor is a fairly safe bet with its STAB Psychic. Kabuto and Diglett are also problematic as they can set up and take Onix out with superior Speed or priority moves. Both will be left with 1 HP after Earthquake and the activation of Focus Sash, so any form of priority can deal with these two threats. Onix can use Protect over Explosion or Taunt in order to save itself against Aipom, but this allows Gligar to outclass Onix, as Onix's major advantage over Gligar is its access to Explosion.

Analysis

Sunny Day allows Onix to provide utility to its teammates by activating their Chlorophyll or boosting their Fire-type STAB attack. Explosion gains momentum for the team, allowing a Chlorophyll sweeper such as Bellossom to come in without fear of taking a hit. Block, in tandem with STAB Earthquake, gives Onix the capability of beating certain Pokemon such as Swalot one-on-one. Earthquake also prevents Onix from becoming overly passive. These last two moves are fairly situational, however, as Onix's main purpose is to set up the sun and bring in a teammate. Maximum Speed EVs alongside a Jolly nature and a potential boost from Salac Berry improve Onix's odds of reliably setting up Sunny Day. 144 Attack EVs guarantee the KO with Explosion on Pidgeot, while the remaining 112 EVs go into HP to increase Onix's overall physical bulk so that it can switch into Pidgeot and other Flying-types repeatedly if need be. While Sturdy and Rock Head are both completely useless for Onix, Rock Head could be useful for certain Trace and Skill Swap users such as Porygon and Kecleon, which would suddenly no longer take recoil from Double-Edge. As such, Sturdy is Onix's better ability. Chlorophyll users such as Bellossom, Tangela, and Tropius make great teammates for Onix, as they greatly benefit from the offensive utility it provides. Fire-types such as Flareon can also make use of the sun Onix provides, as it gives a power boost to their STAB attacks. Spikes support from suicide lead Glalie is helpful, not necessarily for Onix but for sun hyper offense teams as a whole. Other Options A lead set utilizing Endure over Block allows Onix to more reliably activate its Salac Berry, nearly guaranteeing that it can use Sunny Day. Be aware that Onix loses to a majority of opposing leads such as Glalie, Hitmonchan, Vigoroth, Magby, and Venomoth. Rock Slide can be used over Earthquake as Onix's attacking option, nailing Flying-types such as Murkrow and Pidgeot without having to sacrifice itself with Explosion prematurely. However, Onix has likely already set up Sunny Day by the time the aforementioned Flying-types have switched in, so it's okay if it sacrifices itself. Rock Slide is also less useful than Earthquake when up against Swalot, which can Rest off the damage more easily and KO Onix with Ice Beam or Hidden Power Ground. Checks and Counters Opposing Chlorophyll users such as Tropius, Tangela, and Bellossom can all wreck Onix with Solar Beam, put it asleep with Sleep Powder, or set up Swords Dance in Tropius's case. Other Grass-types such as Roselia can also make quick work of Onix, although not quite as reliably. Water-types such as Wailord, Dewgong, Kingler, and Whiscash can douse Onix with Surf or Hydro Pump. Pelipper and Huntail are considerably dangerous, as Pelipper is immune to Earthquake and has immense physical bulk, while Huntail is slower than Onix and can set up Rain Dance after Onix uses Sunny Day to countersweep with Surf. Hitmonchan can deal massive damage with Sky Uppercut and pick off a weakened Onix with Mach Punch. However, Hitmonchan still takes a lot from Earthquake and Explosion. Electric-types such as Plusle and Pikachu carry Hidden Power Grass from time to time, nailing Whiscash, Graveler, Pupitar, and, of course, Onix. Even if they opt to run Hidden Power Ice, Onix will be severely crippled due to its pitifully low Special Defense stat.

Analysis

Enormous Defense and a Rock typing give Onix a helpful position in ADV ZU as a check to physical attackers like Doduo, Beedrill, Anorith, and offensive Mightyena. Onix's solid base 70 Speed makes it a uniquely fast tank compared to other Rock-types like Corsola and Rhyhorn, as it can get the jump on otherwise troublesome special attackers like Flaaffy, Seaking, and Chinchou. Substitute lets Onix use the free turns it generates against Normal-types like Aipom and Doduo to better position itself against potential switch-ins like Corsola and Rhyhorn, and revenge killers like Hidden Power Grass Ponyta, Quilava, and Abra are thwarted by Onix's Substitute. Explosion lets Onix remove or make enormous dents in troublesome walls like Gloom, Porygon, and Koffing. In addition, it lets Onix trade with major offensive threats like Cubone and Seaking that it wouldn't otherwise OHKO. Substitute synergizes with Explosion by letting Onix scout common users of Protect, such as Castform, Noctowl, and Seaking. Onix can use Protect itself over Explosion, enabling it to scout faster Choice Band users like Aipom, Doduo, and Volbeat for their Ground- and Fighting-type coverage moves. Protect also grants Onix extra passive recovery from Leftovers, which is an asset considering it has no other recovery. 176 Speed EVs and a Jolly nature make Onix faster than Meditite, neutral-natured Seaking and Chinchou, and offensive Mightyena. Choice Band Doduo only has a 1.2% to 2HKO Onix with Hidden Power Ground after Leftovers recovery when it has 176 HP EVs. The remaining EVs are dumped into Attack to give a much-needed boost to Onix's power, notably pushing Explosion over OHKO thresholds against targets like Porygon, Gloom, and Cubone, and the extra power helps Onix wallbreak more effectively against foes like Noctowl and Flaaffy without opening itself up to being KOed back. Onix shores up both the defensive backbone and speed control of offense and bulky offense teams. Its Explosion removing or heavily damaging bulky foes can open up a variety of teammates; Ponyta, Quilava, Beedrill, and Anorith thrive as cleaners from the holes Onix can blow into cores relying on bulky Water-types like Corsola, Seaking, and Wartortle; Abra and specially offensive Ponyta love Porygon being out of the picture and having a Rock-type like Onix to tank Quick Attack from Doduo; Meditite can finish off weakened Koffing and Tropius, and Onix can handle faster Normal-types like Aipom and Doduo for it. Special walls like Gloom, Porygon, and Noctowl make up for Onix's awful special bulk, and they form complementary defensive cores with it thanks to its ability to answer physical attackers like Anorith and Beedrill. Wish support from Delcatty and Drowzee and Leech Seed support from Gloom and Tropius can provide some additional recovery for Onix, which otherwise lacks recovery beyond Leftovers. Onix is quite passive, even against targets it hits super effectively like Corsola, so it depends on more offensive teammates to pick up its slack; Seaking and Ponyta can handle Koffing, Flaaffy and Gloom pressure Corsola, and offensive Mightyena and Meditite can beat Castform and Porygon.
